AZ State at MGM Grand in Las Vegas on 12/22?

I plan on attending. Jack of Virginia, do you want to join me?

Being out west has certainly limited my attendance at St. John's games.

I did go to Coach Lavin's midnight first game at St. Mary's. Try napping before the game in their parking lot with that darn bell tower blasting out songs every fifteen minutes or so. From that game I thought Dwayne Poole would be another David Russell. Oh, well!

Jack and I also attended the UCLA game out here. The UCLA center killed us. He never moved, just stayed near the basket.

I hope this time we finally crack through the win column.

Yes, let's get together for this trip. Already started looking into hotels.

Am thinking of making this trip my Christmas present. Two nights at the Luxor is $126.00 and two nights at the MGM Grand is $195.00. This seems very reasonable. Sometimes Jet Blue has good fares on flights to Vegas.

I end up travelling to Vegas on average about once every 1-2 years. Keep in mind when booking strip hotels is that the rates quoted do not include a hefty resort fee of about $25 per night that includes internet and free phone for domestic calls. Beware of cab drivers who literally take you for a ride (the long way) to spike cab fares. Luxor is usually reasonably priced and is on the far south strip. Bally's is often overlooked as an older hotel but rooms are good, rates are lower, and its connected to Paris. Rates typically surge on Saturday night as people come in for the weekends.

I included the Resort Fee in the price, it is $28.00 a day at the Luxor and $32.50 at the MGM Grand. Renting a car may be cheaper than taking taxis.

Good job, panther. The resort fees are a surprise to some at checkin.

Renting a car can be cheaper, but except for going casino to casino, it's pretty useless unless you are going to head out of the city to Red Rock canyon, or some other attraction. Parking is free at hotels, but they are so large that it is still a decent walk from some garages to the casino. I'd consider going but I'll be in New Orleans in December and then Vegas a few months later.

You can get a shuttle to and from the airport to most strip casinos, don't need a car unless leaving the area.

Yeah def don't need a rental in Vegas. Some guys were suggesting places to stay: Planet Hollywood, believe it or not , is awesome and close to the MGM.

Given the 2 choices, I'd go MGM Grand. Just make sure you have a tracking device on cause that hotel is absolutely massive.

If you're looking for cheap near MGM try Excalibur. Never stayed there and probably wouldn't but it is cheap and caddy corner connected by elevated sidewalks. Especially mid week. Maybe I'll cash in a night from my Myvegas account and drive out for the game. That'd be at least 2 games next year as I'll definitely be at LBS as well.

Kind of shocked at the low rates in December, especially near Christmas. Rates were out of site last year when we spent New Years there.

Vegas is now a weekend and convention town. Too many rooms for mid week travel when it's only leisure travelers and not national holiday. If you look at their monthly rate calendar that week and Thanksgiving week are their two cheapest weeks all year.

I just checked the Excalibur.......arriving on Sunday, leaving on Wednesday........3 nights........their website said it's $29 / night without resort fee!!!!

"You're better off at The Luxor than Excalibur. Next to one another and close to the MGM Grand. "

Why is the Luxor better? I just checked.........they want $35 / night, plus the Luxor is further from MGM than the Excalibur.

It's cleaner and newer. Last time I was in Vegas there was a shooting at the Ex. They're connected by a walkway so the distance is negligible.

Jack and I also attended the UCLA game out here. The UCLA center killed us. He never moved, just stayed near the basket.

I hope this time we finally crack through the win column.

FYI - That Big Man was Joshua Smith, the Gtown center this season. We shut him down and he fouled out in only 8 min this year at MSG. He transferred from UCLA to Gtown right after that season.

And for those looking for hotels remember the old saying, you get what you pay for. IMO spending a little more and staying at Ceasars, Planet Hollywood, or Mandaly Bay(close to MGM and connect to Excalibur by free monorail) is worth it.

This is very, very true in Vegas. Avoid the Excalibur at all costs...unless you like Motel 6 type of rooms. The Luxor....is a tomb. Seriously dark, dank and has a vague moldy smell. Take a step up to Mandalay, or if a deal is being run, The Delano (formerly The Hotel).
If you want to spend a little more, go with any of the big 4 hotels, The Venetian, The Bellagio,Wynn or Aria. You can't go wrong with any of the above...especially if you can swing a good rate.

I highly recommend the Aria and they have had some good deals at times.
