Kentucky is a program.

Unless they bring in someone grossly incompetent (who would never get to stay that long anyway - see Billy Gillespie), they will always be good, and most years, great. Every coach they have had, has had some level of success there. Kansas and UNC are two other examples (Doherty, again, was let go once he started staining the program - they didn't wait it out, and his replacement has won more national titles at UNC then the great Dean Smith did).

It's not like UCONN, which was a national power under Calhoun, but garbage before and after he was there. Ditto John Calipari at UMASS, who built that program from the ground up, and now, nobody even knows that it exists.

Smith's record at Minnesota, Texas Tech, and Memphis was very underwhelming (although he didn't get much of a chance with the Tigers, once they realized that they could get Penny Hardaway's entire AAU team, if they brought him on as a coach).

All four of those fanbases, on the whole, were not sad to see Smith go. They didn't even give him the treatment that Arkansas fans have given Mike Anderson (I do believe they are genuine, BTW, when it comes to CMA). Heck, Minnesota fired him after he won a game in the NCAA Tournament, and nobody credible had any problem with that. That says something to me.
I'm not a big Tubby fan either. I don't think Tubby is an elite HC, but he's had a damn good career: .659 winning % over 28 seasons... with 18 NCAA appearances, 1 National Title, 2 more Elite 8's, and 4 more Sweet 16's.

If Carnesecca had that type of career at St John's they'd have renamed the island of Manhattan after him.

So you are going to have one strike against this guy because he was an assistant to a guy who was less than an all-time great HC?? Ok....seems stupid to me...but, ok....

Just curious, but how many strikes do you have against Cleveland and Macon?

I'm not thrilled with the Macon hire, because Hofstra and Rutgers didn't go anywhere with his guys, but if he's strictly a recruiter (a la Matt, or Ron Rutledge), then I think he will do a fine job.

I know little of Cleveland, only that he has been with CMA every step of the way. I view CMA as a "high floor, low ceiling" hire. After the way Tim Cluess was treated throughout this process (everyone knows that I was the #1 advocate on here for getting him, right from the start), then someone like CMA is probably the best we can do. It's unfortunate, but it is what it is.

CMA does not have me ranting and raving against him. Tubby Smith would have (so would have the Loyola-Chicago guy, FWIW).

As one who defended Mullin's right to sink or swim with the staff he chose, I'm not about to question MA's staff composition, especially since he seems to be going about it in a very thoughtful, logical manner.

Hearing former Memphis, Texas Tech and Minnesota assistant coach Joe Esposito in mix for last spot on Mike Anderson’s staff. Bronx native who went to Marist. #sjubb
Obviously, he has worked with Tubby Smith in the past.

Tubby is the only national championship winning coach who's accomplishment's I can't respect (talking on-the-court reasons here only). Inherited Rick Pitino's very talented group, won with it (give him credit for that), then rode it through many disappointing finishes at Kentucky, and the three schools above.

Maybe this guy is a great coach, and is a great recruiter (I hope so), but because of who he's been associated with in the past, he's going to have a strike against him, at least from me, right at the start.
Talented, talented group. But taking a talented group and winning it is a lot more easier said than done. Gotta always respect winning a national championship my man.

Don’t know anything about him and if he he gets the AC slot I will trust CMA. But he was the assistant to the head coach at UNLV, like Paultz mentioned maybe he is willing to come home to NY for less than one of 3 AC spots.
I mean do we know how he coaches? Do we know of any recruits he’s pulled?

Just seems so random.
How can you say it’s random?? You work as a coach? The staff has worked in and coached basketball for decades. The fact that we are slowly adding assistants seems to indicate it is anything but random and a lot of thought and research going into the hires. Also prioritizing what CMA wants out of guys as his assistant spots. Random because some board posters haven’t heard of him? I’d venture to guess not so much.

At this point we can only go by we've read about coach, his record at other schools and the fact that he's not rushing to put his staff and team together, but based on all of that, "random" is not a characteristic I'd associate with the way he operates. We'll see how it all works out, but I am very encouraged by what we've seen to date.

This isn’t just some neophyte coach picking assistants. He’s got a more seasoned staff by a country mile than the last staff. The last thing I’m going to do is start questioning his coaching picks when most of us couldn’t pick them out of a lineup. In Iron Mike I Trust

Random is hiring your buddy’s son with zero coaching experience ...

Random is hiring your teammate to do nothing....

CMA is proving to be methodical in his approach.

The fact that he’s posting it publicly tells me he’s probably gonna take the job.
Several solid names in the mix including Esposito.
How about sharing some names with those of us not in the know... :cheer:
Good. I was about to post how unprofessional that tweet is.
It’s why I figured he was taking it. Good job vetting lol...

Based on recent Friday news dumps by SJU, will we see formal confirmation of Van Macon hire and perhaps another tidbit tomorrow? Hope so.
