Kentucky is a program.
Unless they bring in someone grossly incompetent (who would never get to stay that long anyway - see Billy Gillespie), they will always be good, and most years, great. Every coach they have had, has had some level of success there. Kansas and UNC are two other examples (Doherty, again, was let go once he started staining the program - they didn't wait it out, and his replacement has won more national titles at UNC then the great Dean Smith did).
It's not like UCONN, which was a national power under Calhoun, but garbage before and after he was there. Ditto John Calipari at UMASS, who built that program from the ground up, and now, nobody even knows that it exists.
Smith's record at Minnesota, Texas Tech, and Memphis was very underwhelming (although he didn't get much of a chance with the Tigers, once they realized that they could get Penny Hardaway's entire AAU team, if they brought him on as a coach).
All four of those fanbases, on the whole, were not sad to see Smith go. They didn't even give him the treatment that Arkansas fans have given Mike Anderson (I do believe they are genuine, BTW, when it comes to CMA). Heck, Minnesota fired him after he won a game in the NCAA Tournament, and nobody credible had any problem with that. That says something to me.
I'm not a big Tubby fan either. I don't think Tubby is an elite HC, but he's had a damn good career: .659 winning % over 28 seasons... with 18 NCAA appearances, 1 National Title, 2 more Elite 8's, and 4 more Sweet 16's.
If Carnesecca had that type of career at St John's they'd have renamed the island of Manhattan after him.
So you are going to have one strike against this guy because he was an assistant to a guy who was less than an all-time great HC?? Ok....seems stupid to me...but, ok....
Just curious, but how many strikes do you have against Cleveland and Macon?
I'm not thrilled with the Macon hire, because Hofstra and Rutgers didn't go anywhere with his guys, but if he's strictly a recruiter (a la Matt, or Ron Rutledge), then I think he will do a fine job.
I know little of Cleveland, only that he has been with CMA every step of the way. I view CMA as a "high floor, low ceiling" hire. After the way Tim Cluess was treated throughout this process (everyone knows that I was the #1 advocate on here for getting him, right from the start), then someone like CMA is probably the best we can do. It's unfortunate, but it is what it is.
CMA does not have me ranting and raving against him. Tubby Smith would have (so would have the Loyola-Chicago guy, FWIW).
