Article: Mullin to SJU An Awful Hire

Back to the point of this post, we've got it covered. Baldi, Avon, Paultzman, MJMaher, and Marillac are posted outside of the writer's house right now waiting for him to emerge. Beast of the East, Fun, Jack Williams, and TXRedmen have next shift. When he finally comes out, I can assure you this will be the last time he publishes anything bad about Mullin.

This guy has no shot. Avon already brought the dead fish. Baldi's got the cannolis and Paultz will drive the get away car and you and I will pull an Ron-Ron detroit on him

All we have to do is lure him to the Jones Beach toll booths.

I think Tom Bradley is standing guard by his door. At first it was weird that we all wore Mullin jerseys, but as we get more drunk we just keep high fiving and repeating how awesome it is going to be with Mullin.

Moose was supposed to be part of the shift, but the last report of him he was still approaching random strangers pleading that he wanted Lavin hired years before Roberts was fired. None of the strangers know who Lavin or Roberts are.

I hope Chris puts this article in his desk drawer in his new office. Then he can pull out the article and burn it after we win a Big Est championship under Chris. While it's fair to question the hire, downright trashing it leaves the author hanging out there on a very lonesome limb.

I just came across this article. Writer (along with some on this board from comments I've seen on here) seems to think that the HS kids of today are incapable of knowing or learning about someone's basketball greatness if it occurred before they were born. I personally don't buy that argument but it will be an interesting debate.

I know there are lots of professional athletes who have no sense of history. Tons of major league players who had little sense of who Jackie Robinson was. Do you think kids today don't know who Magic Johnson, Bird, Jordan, Jabbar are? If so it's kind of sad, but I don't think it's a huge problem one way or another. I'd also guess they have no real clue who Boeheim, Coack K, Pitino, or Donovan is until they start the recruiting process and those schools are targets.

Friend of mine's kid(Molloy Grad) plays baseball up at Fairfield. Went up to a game last year and and noticed he was using a George Brett bat. Seeing as George and Donny baseball(during his 6 year run) were IMO the 2 best all around hitters that I've ever seen, I start chatting up the kid about Brett. Kid had no idea who Brett is. Kids today just don't have the same sense of history about sports as we did as kids, especially baseball.

I think we need to be careful not to use too broad of brush. Remember, guys like myself, Avon, Moose, and Desco were all 80's babies, and we know our share about sports history. I spoke to a Mizzou freshman (sports journalist hopeful) that would wow just about any of us with his knowledge.

Every kid knows about the Dream Team. They might not know Chris was on it, but that could just increase the awe factor when they find out. Mullin doesn't even have to say a thing about his resume. The kid's parents, advisers, or coaches will be able to roll of a dozen facts about Christ that will knock the kid to the floor. "Do you know who you were just talking to?"

His membership in the Dream Team club gives him more recognition than the HOF credentials. It's just the way it is.

Deeming this a hire a failure with the staff that's being rumored is ridiculous. Again I don't think mullin takes this job without knowing his staff around him would be top notch. We will see who's right in the end. I'm very confident

Sounds like a Jilted lover...Hurley lover. Danny Hurley would have been a great fit but Mullin is a perfect fit.

His comparison to EJ confuses me. Jordan is yet another decade removed from Chris and his NBA career was over before Chris ever even graduated college. Just as a name brand...Chris is a Dreamteam member, 5-time allstar and WoodenAward winner. Eddie Jordan has a great year in the RU run to the final four and named Eastern Finals MVP but that ended his laurels.
Eddie Jordan came into Rutgers with a lifetime losing record of coaching in the pros (.428 winning %). Yes Mullin has no coaching experience, but that already puts his record light years ahead of Jordan's. I am not trying to put EJ down...but the comparison makes no sense to me.

There is always the contrarian voice. If Mullin doesn't succeed he can alway say "I told you so."

If this hire works, we will be too busy celebrating the hoops renaissance. We won't remember what was written, or we won't bother wasting valuable time to give a flying fart as to what this columnist said.

Marillac, while I did not want to see Lavin let go, I also believe the hiring of Mullin will bring our fan base together. However, Calling him "Christ" in your next to last sentence may be a bit of a reach, lol !!!!

who do the kids know?
kids play video games...Mullin is one of the legends on PS3 basketball and doesnt miss a shot....my 8 year old began playing him on PS3 the minute I asked about him and Mully is now his favorite player. Do kids know who Hurley or White or whatever coach ? Google Chris Mullin, and in 2 minutes you'll realize what a sick resume we are getting. Experience like that is unheard of. Kids want to go pro....who is better than a guy who ran an NBA team ? Work ethic? Who is better than a gym rat ? NYC talent ? Who is better than a NYC legend ? SJU alums? Who is better than The BEST player who ever player at St Johns? Coaching experience ? Stop with that non sense....everyone starts somewhere....Did we question Norm Roberts experience as much ? Mullin is a lot smarter than people think. He is not coming here to fail. This is a dream pick imho, and we should all be 110% behind him and the school on this pick. Imagine he got a chance at another school and not here....imagine he became head coach at Seton Hall, or Cuse, or anywhere else....we'd be going crazy that we missed out. I liked Lav, but I Love this decision! Go Mully, Go Johnnies!!

The kids not knowing him is a valid point becuase those are the people he has to recruit. He is not recruiting 40 year olds. With that being said if you were going to move on from Lavin, this was a good way to go as none of the established names getting thrown around were coming here.
Mullin is SJU and everyone should get behind the hire. Hopefully people realize what that means. Going to take awhile to get this thing turned around and we will be awful next year. As Fun pointed out certainly Mullin knows enough about basketball to be succesful.
Go St John's!

Boomer Esiason thinks the hiring is a bad idea. That should convince anyone who has reservations of its virtues.

Other than a small concern about recruiting, my biggest worry is what this will do to Fun. Even if it doesn't work out, can't see Mullin doing anything that Fun would truly hate. This is a pretty big concern as it might affect his posting style, of which I am a fan.

Norm's best recruit was the son of a former teammate. Norm only played at Molloy and Queens College. Mullin played at St. John's, two Olympic teams, 16 years in the NBA with two different teams, and worked as an exec for a few different teams.

Obviously you can't build or sustain a program with a core of the sons of guys you played and worked with, but there are some intriguing names out there to give him a little boost: Bol Bol a top ten freshman recruit whose brother is named after Chris Mullin, Maverick Rowan, Rowan Barrett Jr., Charles Minlend Jr. off the top of my head. I guess we just missed on Tim Hardaway Jr., but there will be others.

Go St John's!

This obsessive worrying about Mullin not being known to future recruits is overblown. Coaches that never played the game and have all the charisma as a seasonal worker at a storefront tax preparer get top 50 recruits to commit to schools in hick towns covered with snow for months at a time. Mullin will bring a packet to every kid's home complete with his own accomplishments. He will surround himself with proven recruiters and will be there to close the deal. He will bring a style of play that matches his own strengths as a player. He will recruit multiple guys that can shoot the rock. Don't worry about a thing.

I think pretty much everyone is at least intrigued by the hire if not excited. I am more on the excited side. At first I didn't think would be a good idea but as a 42 year old who grew up with Mullin, how can you not get excited.

The recruiting thing is worth mentioning though. It is the only real unknown. But than again it was supposedly to be Lavin's forte and he flamed out at it.

But he is recruiting children of 40 year olds. And those 40 year old +/- parents, along with HS and AAU coaches, sure as hell know who Mullin is and what his legend is. IMO that will more than offset any concerns about kids not knowing his name at the moment. Hopefully after a year or two of coaching here every high school kid will know his name.

O ye of little faith.

OPENING SCENE

Recruit: "It was great meeting you coach, but I'm not all that familiar with your playing career because I'm 16 and you're like 50."

Mullin: "Google me."

(3.6 seconds later)

Recruit: "Daaaaamn"

THE END

Norm did not play at Molloy. He played at Springfield Gardens HS, where he believed his talent was equivalent to Anthony Mason. He was the freshman coach there, and according to some, was an absolutely horrible coach there as well.

Whether you're for or against the Mullin hire, this article is poorly written. Maybe the writer thought he could get some acclaim by being the first NY sportswriter to come out officially against the hire. Comparing Eddie Jordan to Chris Mullin is the stuff you'd expect to see at a stand up comedy show.
