Article: 5 Questions SJU Must Answer for 2017

Oh and Fun, saw this picture recently. Didn't realize you guys had such connections to the all time greats.

That's cute!!! I would recruit over him.

Most unfair Al, kid suffered a big injury 2 years ago and missed a year. He improved nicely as the season went on and while he may never be a star can be a valuable piece going forward. He can play 3 different positions and in case you are unaware the staff has recruited much higher ranked players for this season at the 1,2and 3.

I am going to quote Fun's year-end assessment here that Ellison progressed from awful in the first half of the season to merely atrocious in the second half. I'd love to see a quantum improvement this year-- he has great size for a guard and supposedly good work ethic. But in the absence of that, why would we not recruit over him moving forward?

Last year, Ellison had a better overall shooting % and three point % than everyone's favorite knockdown shooter. With his size and athleticism I am really not sure why people expect Mussini to suddenly be good yet Ellison is a bum?

I'm not sure either. They are both closer to mediocre just with different and limited skill sets. I still stand by my belief that if either is averaging much over 10 mins per game the team will probably not crack the .500 mark.

Probably.
My point with Ellison vs Mussini is simply that it would be easier for Ellison to improve his shot, shot selection and decision making than it would be for Mussini to improve his height and athleticism (The reasons he will never be a great shooter at this level)

That was my point. They have recruited over him. They must have watched his play last year too. There are all sorts of hard luck stories, injuries etc. that cause players to regress or overcome their situations. I don't evaluate players based on those things, only how they perform on the court. I am very anxious to see how Ellison performs this year, and I will hope he is the player some say he will be. I will reserve my opinions of that until I have actually seen him perform better than he did last year.

Al, he was only a freshman ( or a first year student as they will be called at Princeton from now on). He clearly has potential and is a hard worker from excellent pedigree. Reminds me of a young DJ Kennedy who may take longer to mature. His previous injuries may have slowed him defensively but kids like him could bust out once healthy. Our basketball team will be like a very good sushi restaurant; raw, yet seasoned but will depend highly on the skills of the sushi chefs. I am more concerned about their development than Malik's.

Hopefully this year ends up being Nobu good and not grocery store Mr Miagi Sushi stand[/quote]

Or this Sushi.

Says the guy who once proclaimed him the best shooter since Mullin ;)

Those Weasels are not the same animal. I'm old but not that old. Our former guitar player though did play on Disco Lucy, which was voted the second worst disco tune of all time behind Disco Duck.

He took a lot less shots than Musinni and had much less stress on him. Musinni had the ball in his hands most of the time running the offense and setting up team mates Now he gets to play the 2
expect more scoring from himto go along with much more talented players

There is not a 2 guard in the country that he will be able to defend. Situational player at best. I def can see Ellison improving more than Mussini. Plus with Ponds and Lovett a bigger guard is needed. I predict Ellison plays more than Mussini

He is not there to be a top defender he is there to score and if they play him correctly he will spot up and shoot we will not be lacking for defense

Don't remember that but probably got caught up in one of the early season games Wanted Mullin to do well and looked at early games with heart instead of with eyes. Against good comp he will struggle.

I am really not sure why people expect Mussini to suddenly be good yet Ellison is a bum?

Are you really not sure?

Probably a little bit, but I think it has more to do with people just starved for a ST John's player that can shoot.. We keep being promised these guys can shoot and they never can in games.

Certain people are starved for a certain type of shooter. Other than hype, what has Mussini demonstrated? He's a dwarf, he can't cover a pillar, and he shoots 30 percent from three. Yes, he's a freshman, yes he played out of position, yes he's a furriner learning the culture and the language. But he also is not very good at basketball. I hope he improves, but between he and Ellison there is no contest between their potentials. There is only melanin.

Agree with Monte's post below (above). Other than Lavin - who recruited only players who were the best something at something since someone - no one really promised anything. Other coaches brought in alleged shooters with a track record of shooting: Avery Patterson was purportedly a shooter, so was Larry Wright, so was Rickey Torres, so was Heath Orvis and Sergio Luyk and John Hempel and on and on into the mists of time. Why believe the hype this time? There's only one reason, and it's not pretty.

I am a big fan of the red, white and green but Musso's inability to play D1 defense would be a big liability against stronger teams. It was like St. John's playing 4 guys against 5 on defense. He is a great kid but he is more on the level of Amar Alibegovic and should see no more than 5 minutes per half. Malik Ellison is slightly more talented and has a huge height advantage so he could see a few more minutes per half but neither will play close to 10 minutes per half with the addition of studs like Ponds, Ahmed and Marcus.

See and here I thought you were like that old, not.

I'm also glad you aren't these guys.

Maybe I'll bring them one of your CD's and ask them to sign it. Uranus or Bust I'm thinking. That'd be good for a laugh.

I don't disagree that some want him to succeed based on the color of his skin, but I think it has more to do with stereotyping. Little white guy must be a good shooter. White guy playing basketball everyone expects him to be a good shooter. And he probably would be but not at this level. Being able to shoot is more than just being able to hit wide open jumpers. And I think he can do that in about 10 minutes a game but you are not going to get a lot of wide open shot attempts at this level.

The idea that his natural position is at the 2 is frightening. Again on a good team as a zone buster i t could work for short bursts. But anyone thinking he is going to thrive as a two guard even in this watered down BE is delusional.

If he stays with the program and the program progresses I can see him eventually settling into the Alex Dillard role from the 40 minutes of Hell Arkansas teams.

I could care less about the color of his skin, I'm just starved for another great Italian player. Things just haven't been the same around here since Marco Baldi said arrivederci.

I am white and I can honestly say , I don't care what the color of a player is. He can be purple and if he can get the ball in the hoop I'm happy.

Steinfeld AND white? What are the odds? What's next Landesberg AND black? LaRusso and Jewish? ;)

I could care less about the color of his skin, I'm just starved for another great Italian player. Things just haven't been the same around here since Marco Baldi said arrivederci.

I was told that Mussini seriously wore down as the season progressed, dropping 15 or 20 lbs that he couldn't afford to lose. The athletic dept tried tried to keep the weight on him, but nothing worked. I'd attribute at least some of his poor second half to that, and wouldn't be surprised at all with a better soph campaign with more limited playing time.

Thought the freshman 15 was supposed to go the other way. :)

Dwarf come on now he is btw 5-10 and 6-0ft I am still high on him lets see what coach thinks I predict we see a different Mussini re his scoring depending on playing time.I would not be surprised if he starts. Every team has a player with defensive liabilities which other will make up for

I think he can knock down a few threes but his athleticism is D-2 at best. I still have nightmares of him bringing the ball up the court in the STAC exhibition. I have never seen such poor dribbling from a D-1 guard and his defense is a joke.

He had never played point before, and his ball handling improved dramatically as the season went on. I don't remember him getting stripped or trapped or looking like he was over his head handling the ball. I do think he suffers from tunnelvision and still telegraphed passes at year's end, which is correctable. In terms of foot speed he is not the fastest guy, but then again probably would have beaten a 20 year old Chris Mullin in a race. I'm hoping he comes into the season in great shape with better stamina. If that happens I think he will be an improved player capable of being a productive Big East player - not a star, mind you, but someone who can knock down shots, and in a hurry when he gets it going. He does have a very quick release.
