Article: 5 Questions SJU Must Answer for 2017

Given the train wreck which Mullin inherited when he took over from the TV Announcer he and Matt have done a credible job in repositioning the St.John's men's basketball program.

Lot of talk about Yakwe breaking out and I am definitely someone who is very excited about his potential. Just wondering what do posters envision as 'breakout" for him? I would be very surprised if he averages double digits but I dont think hes the type of player who's impact is felt strictly by their numbers.

8 pts 8 rbs, 2 blks would be fantastic.

Coach Mullin should be giving Yakwe private shooting lessons
If Yakwe develops a reliable mid range jump shot, he's a definite double digit scorer IMO

Really only one question: Is Chris a coach or a feel-good figurehead?

Matt's magic will only last so long if recruits don't see results.

I agree but everyone has to be realistic about seeing results
It's unrealistic to expect to go from 8-24 to the NCAA's in one year
Getting to the NIT this year and NCAA next year is a realistic goal
If we can't do that with this roster, it would be time to be concerned in 2018

I agree. And FT's are gonna be big for him. He shot around 50% last year. Gotta get that up! I'm a little more optimistic that his scoring numbers will go up slightly higher than we think. We didn't really run offensive plays for him and most of his points come off his own hustle. Hopefully with defenses collapsing on guards who can actually penetrate this season he'll get more buckets off easy dishes and cleaning up around the glass. Excited to watch him continue to develop with actual ball handlers this year.

Yakwe has such poor shooting form that he may need both Mitch Richmond and Mullin for shooting lessons. Almost all his shots should be within 6 feet of the basket if he is to be a double double player. This year, leave the shooting to Bashir, Shamorie and Marcus. Anything inside will be gravy until Brown and Clark arrive.

..and Freud. He'll be a good shooter.

just keep Sima away from the perimeter... We don't want his 50% 3-pt stat line (1 for 2) to get to his head.

That's cute!!! I would recruit over him.

Most unfair Al, kid suffered a big injury 2 years ago and missed a year. He improved nicely as the season went on and while he may never be a star can be a valuable piece going forward. He can play 3 different positions and in case you are unaware the staff has recruited much higher ranked players for this season at the 1,2and 3.

I am going to quote Fun's year-end assessment here that Ellison progressed from awful in the first half of the season to merely atrocious in the second half. I'd love to see a quantum improvement this year-- he has great size for a guard and supposedly good work ethic. But in the absence of that, why would we not recruit over him moving forward?

Let's give him a chance. Everyone keeps saying that Mussini will be better with guards that can pass and so will Ellison.

I haven't been the biggest fan of Ellison so far but I agree with this. I really do think it's sort of unfair to judge any of last year's freshman off of that season alone. That wasn't a functioning Big East basketball team. I'm appreciate that squad for fighting and showing some spirit despite their glaring deficiencies but let's see how these guys do when it's not considered a major achievement to get the ball past half court.

Last year, Ellison had a better overall shooting % and three point % than everyone's favorite knockdown shooter. With his size and athleticism I am really not sure why people expect Mussini to suddenly be good yet Ellison is a bum?

He took a lot less shots than Musinni and had much less stress on him. Musinni had the ball in his hands most of the time running the offense and setting up team mates Now he gets to play the 2
expect more scoring from himto go along with much more talented players

There is not a 2 guard in the country that he will be able to defend. Situational player at best. I def can see Ellison improving more than Mussini. Plus with Ponds and Lovett a bigger guard is needed. I predict Ellison plays more than Mussini

If only it were that simple, we could hire the dream team as assistants and win the NCAAs every year.

I believe both FM & Ellison will show improvement this coming season. My concern with Ellison is with his health, injury wise. I hope those concerns prove unfounded.

Are you really not sure?

Probably a little bit, but I think it has more to do with people just starved for a ST John's player that can shoot.. We keep being promised these guys can shoot and they never can in games.

The only one who promised anything(IE "another stellar recruiting class!!!!!", "best pure shooter since Jason Kapono", etc) is now a FOX commentator. I don't recall Chris or anyone on this staff over-hyping(or even touting) any of the kids they've brought in. Hopefully, with all of the changes and improvements on the roster, Mussini will be able to find his niche as a shooting guard at this level. Time will tell.

I'm not sure either. They are both closer to mediocre just with different and limited skill sets. I still stand by my belief that if either is averaging much over 10 mins per game the team will probably not crack the .500 mark.
