Butler has a chance to finish second ??

Absolutely. They return four starters from a team that lost several close games, they bring in two very solid freshman PF's ranked as high as just about any players they've ever recruited out of high school, they landed a grad transfer from Indiana who will be eligible immediately, and they bring back Roosevelet Jones who missed last season but started the on the 2011-2012 Final Four team. He will likely be their best player. I don't think they are done either. I've seen them rumored with a number of transfers.

That’s a huge stretch. SJU returns 4 starters off a team that was DEMONSTRABLY better then Butler, so why would Butler leapfrog SJU?

And they lose Khyle Marshall and their best freshman this year Elijah Brown who is transferring. The kid from Indiana is not that good.

They will be better especially if they can flip some of those close games. But you are implying they will make a quantum leap considering they were dead last for most of last year behind DePaul. Heck DePaul brings back two All-Freshmen players.

Bottom line is you are asking a lot.

You are free to make your own predictions.
Butler lost a ton of close games. They get their best player back from a medical redshirt--a kid that started and played 30 mpg on a team that made it to the national championship game. They bring in a four star PF and another top 150 caliber PF as well. Their best player from this past year becomes a junior. They will have a former McDonald's All-American PG to push things in practice, and I also think they add another immediately eligible transfer.

I think they will be right in the group behind Nova: Gtown, St. John's, Providence, and Xavier.

So did SJU. And Butler won 2 close games as well, over Marquette in OT and SHU on the road.

Even if they are good they are NOT going to reverse ALL their close losses. Teams lose close games, it happens.

SJU went from 8-10 to 10-8 in a lesser conference. Providence went from 9-9 to 10-8 in a lesser conference. An improvement for SJU of 2 games and PC of 1 game.

The second place team in the BE finished 14-4 (Creighton). For argument’s sake let’s say the 2nd place team wins 14 again. That means Butler would have to improve by TEN games in a 18 game schedule. Is that even remotely plausible?

If Butler goes 9-9, an improvement of FIVE games, is a TON. That would be HUGE.

I can assure you of two things:

-9-9 will NOT finish in 2nd place in the BE and
-NO ONE will have Butler anywhere NEAR pre-season no. 2 in the BE. I would bet few if any would have them in the top 5.

You want to argue they should improve and be dangerous, fine. Reasonable. But jumping from last to 2nd and essentially being a lock NCAA Tourney team without any major 4 or 5 star recruits or big time talent coming back is not a reasonable prediction or a “matter of opinion.” Sorry.

Cupcake City.

The freshmen will need it.

@CerasolisGhost: Seton Hall 2014-15 non-conf: Rutgers, GW, @ Georgia, @ USF, Paradise Jam (3 games), Mercer... add in a few locals and that's nearly full.

@GoodmanESPN: Marquette has landed a commitment from BYU graduate transfer Matt Carlino, a source told ESPN. Eligible to play this coming season.

Hope they do OK for BE sake but don't put much value in freshmen-laden teams unless they are Fab-5 like which this class isn't...

It's a good class for the hall, do t kid yourself. They also return Auda up front, Sterling Gibbs, Sina and some others. It's not all freshmen.

Brooklyn in the house.

Exactly. Gibbs, Sina, Mobley, Auda all coming back with experience. This is not like us in 2011--not by a long shot.

Weak OOC:

@JonRothstein: Villanova's 14-15 non-conference schedule -- Delaware, Saint Joseph's, Temple, Syracuse, Legends Classic, Maryland (Jimmy V), at La Salle.

Michigan, Oregon and VCU are the other 3 teams in the finals of the Legends, plus they'll get two cream puffs at home to start that tourney off, but unlike the NIT they don't have to win those to make the semis.

The below news article appeared in the May 4, 20144 edition of the Omaha World Herald

20144? Back to the future? The key word here Otis is FIRST as in 1st year of a new conference! To compare the TV ratings to ESPN is ludicrous. The "other" new conference won the NCAA title. They did not win it because its games were on ESPN. UCONN is scrambling now to double Ollie's salary to Lavin's level of mediocrity but it may not be enough. Such is the life of an NCAA team in 2014. One day a peacock another day a feather duster. Say hello to Hit for us!

Great for conference RPI:

@JonRothstein: Creighton + Oklahoma will begin a home + home series next year beginning in Omaha, sources told @CBSSports. Return game in Norman in 15-16.
