Around the Big East 19/20
The only real surprise/positive takeaway from the Gavitt Games from a BE perspective was DePaul. They may be pretty good. Certainly better than the usual terrible they are.

The surprise from the Big Ten side is Penn St looks good to.

Bottom line is the BE does not really have any real Final Four contenders for the 2nd straight year. At least now.
Agree, but can DePaul be better without Strus and Cain?

Patrick Reed is better then either one of those guys, IMO. Getting him eligible was key, for them.

That being said, Monday night was probably the best game they will play all year. They shot the lights out all game, until the last few minutes, when it was over.

I think you meant Paul Reed. And you may be right about him, but I’d like to see him play at that level some more first. I also agree with you on that being their best game. They didn’t look that good in the earlier games, and sometimes great shooting nights cover up a lot of warts. I think they’ll be competitive again, but I’m not expecting them to be any better than last year. We’ll see.
Yurtseven is talented but is really a finesse guy. Very, very skilled but not tough. He will get better though but isn’t really a banger.

FWIW, after watching these Gavitt games, I’m not sure SJU is as undermanned as we think. We have Dunn back now and will get Steere in a handful more games. I haven’t been blown away by most Big East teams I’ve watched thus far and I think SJU plays at a pace that will give headaches to a lot of teams out there.

When we are at full strength, and continue to improve, I think we really could cause some trouble in our league.
Agreed MCNPA, the only team that I've seen that I feel is really better at this point than anyone else in this league is Seton Hall.

Yes, that's who I meant. Patrick Reed is the golfer, who has no connection to DePaul, whatsoever.

The NCAA is imposing a scholarship reduction and a fine on the Pirates after concluding that former associate head coach Shaheen Holloway tampered in the transfer of forward Taurean Thompson from Syracuse to Seton Hall in 2017.

The Pirates will lose one scholarship for the 2020-21 season, dropping from 13 to 12. That leaves them with no openings for additional players at the moment, though that likely will change in the spring given the sport’s increasingly transfer-happy offseason.

In terms of monetary punishment, Seton Hall will forfeit 1 percent of its men’s basketball budget and pay a $5,000 fine

Zach B re Seton Hall tampering;

According to NCAA, Shaheen Holloway and Taurean Thompson's mother had 154 phone calls without permission from Syracuse. #shbb

154 calls, Jesus.

154 calls with the mother of a player under scholarship at another school without permission to contact that kid from that school is being referred to by the offending school as "inadvertent?"

Maybe they were dating?

So far, on this thread, I have learned that Willard and Cooley are overrated, Yurtseven isn't that good, and DePaul has already played it's best game of the year.

For a fan base that has had very little recent success, we sure are quick to say everyone else sucks. :p

I don't think it's that much of a stretch anymore to say that Cooley and Willard are overrated. At the end of the day, what really matters nationally? What you do in March. Making the tourney isn't that impressive nationally...it's what you do once you get there. And what have Cooley and Willard done, won 2 games or something in the tourney combined the last 6 or 7 years? This has no bearing on us...obviously they've been better than us by far but that's not saying much. Look at a team like Michigan State...they have 8 Final Fours under Izzo or something like that. They have more Final Four appearances than Big East teams not named Nova/Xavier have tourney wins in 7 years. Sure PC and Seton Hall have been ranked a few times with a few nice OOC wins, but even we beat Duke, Cuse 3x, Villanova, etc. Doesn't make you a great team to knock off those guys every so often. It comes down to what you do in March.

Truthfully, no one said Yurtseven wasn't any good. I believe myself and MCN said he was very skillful. I'd take Yurtseven all day everyday and twice on Sundays. But he does play soft for the most part, and has shown he has trouble consistently finishing around the basket (particularly, when the opposition is playing him tough).

Personally, I don't know if I'd say Cooley and Willard are overrated. But right or wrong, unfortunately coaches are judged by how their teams play March.

Based on that criteria our recent run of coaches haven't been overrated, they don't even have a rating.

I think it is hysterical that this is what they got nabbed for. God knows what was going on with Tiny and Whitehead or with Antigua when he was on that staff.

Maybe. But that is still flattering commentary compared to the things this fan base has said about SJU.
