Around the Big East 18/19

Evan Daniels
Marquette transfer Joey Hauser just committed to Michigan State, while his brother Sam Hauser committed to Virginia. Two significant pick ups

Villanova at Ohio State
Michigan State at Seton Hall
Creighton at Michigan
Purdue at Marquette
Providence at Northwestern
Penn State at Georgetown
Minnesota at Butler
DePaul at Iowa

SJU’s turn to sit out.
MSU v the Hall is the prime matchup, if Powell returns (which I think he will, though that's just a guess).

A lot of people have the Pirates in the Top 10 nationally, if he does come back. I personally think that's a little high, but they will be good.
With Powell, SH will certainly be very good and ranked.

Since the Big East has 10 teams and the Big Ten has 14, I don't understand why there aren't 10 games each year. This way, every Big East team could participate each year,

This would have been a great time to have St John's play Nebraska.
Interesting that both teams have been left off the slate this season

SHU will not be a top 25 team let alone top 10...they are a solid not great team IMO. With Powell, 21-23 wins and a 10-6 record in conference but no way are they that dominant. Don't get it.Other than Powell no one makes teams shake in fear on their team.

Adam, I'm talking about changes, period. Changes to coaches regardless of the context is clearly bad for a conference when 60% of your conference just recently changed coaches.
No, that's a ridiculous argument.

4 coaches have been at their school since 2011 or earlier: Cooley, Wright, McDermott and Willard. That's nearly half the conference, and all 4 of them have gotten offers to go elsewhere for more $$$. Wright has been there since 2001 and is nearing 2 decades. Of the Catholic 7 original/old Big East coaches, 3 have stayed, 3 were fired, and 1 was poached (Buzz year 1- Wojo has remained since year 2).

Now for the 3 that were fired: Georgetown, DePaul and St. John's all appear to be on the right track under their new coaches. Georgetown is about to break out while DePaul is finally recruiting 4 star players.

These 3 teams were in the new Big East basement nearly every year. When was the last time they weren't playing Wednesday night as 7-10 seeds? You realize that not all 10 teams can finish in the top 5, right? Should they have just kept their current coaches to appease you and your silly made up narrative?
Changes:

Stevens down to Holtmann down to Jordan Butler downgraded at least for now)
Mack down to Steele (Xavier downgraded at least for now)
Buzz down to Wojo is a downgrade despite some success but pundits would agree
JTIII to Ewing where jury is still out and G'Town is solid but still nowhere near the heights JTIII took them at his peak.

I just don't see where one of the changes was a clear upgrade. Of course it's early and Jordan/Steele need more time to get a few cycles in with their guys plus experience, but ask any national pundit that is unbiased in favor of the Big East and they'd likely agree with me that landing and keeping the biggest name coaches is a concern moving forward having to compete with impossible salaries F5 schools can offer. Luckily we are in a good position with MA in that if he succeeds here, he will likely retire afterward instead of jump ship. When you can only offer $1-2 mil a year while other schools can offer 4 mil+ plus way better facilities, saying you aren't concerned is a bit odd IMO. I wish for the best, but totally rational to have concerns moving forward IMO.

Brad Stevens never coached Butler in the Big East so unfair to even reference him in BE coaching changes. They were in A-10 the year he jumped to NBA and Horizon League before that.

Brad Stevens also had a record of 0-0 before he took the Butler job.
Nobody knew he would become what he is today.
It's a risk and its worked out for Butler a number of times in their coaching choices.

I don't understand what has changed in regards to the coaches. For example Barnes left Providence, Amaker left Seton Hall, and Crean left Marquette for greener pastures at bigger schools in the days of the more bloated Big East. Schools with football have much more revenue, and will always be willing and able to pay more. Coaches who put a premium on every last dollar (and I am NOT saying there is anything wrong with that) are going to move on if they are in demand.

The only change is that now there are no football schools in the BE, as those coaches were less likely to be poachable. But we all know that. Conference realignment brings good and bad, and it is up to the individual fan to decide whether they like the current configuration or not. But it is what it is and the time to accept it was years ago.

Nothing to complain about unless you enjoy complaining.

I don't think it's a fair argument to take coaches who just started 1-2 years ago and say they are downgrades or fault them for not living up to what the former coach did over a far longer time period. Again, you're setting impossible standards for Big East coaches that you wouldn't expect of coaches from other conferences.

Thad Matta wasn't Thad Matta when he became Xavier's HC. Sean Miller wasn't Sean Miller. Chris Mack wasn't Chris Mack. Travis Steele won't be Travis Steele when he leaves. Schools like Xavier and Butler should get benefit of the doubt in their coaching hires until proven otherwise as they follow the same proven strategy. Steele had a pretty good first year (given what he had to work with) and is recruiting extremely well.

Xavier, Providence & Seton Hall fared well retaining top kids who declared for NBA but returned. Big East should be very tough this year.

The guy's a warrior. Very happy he's returning, even though I'll likely regret saying that next season. Lol.

Don't get me wrong, I want as many ranked Big East teams as possible of course, but would anyone be willing to bet with me that Seton Hall will not end the season ranked? I'd bet a lot of money on that. Our conference is simply too tough top to bottom to dominate unless your name is Villanova. Again the question, who but Powell puts fear into the hearts of opponents? If you put a team in the top 10 preseason it pretty much implies they will stick around all season, no? I think G'Town may be better. IMO SHU will be lucky to stick around in the top 25 for any extended period of time even at #25. Top 10 usually means you dominate OOC, pick up some signature wins, and then dominate your conference. If you remember, they had many games they won by the skin of their teeth and they got quite lucky especially with us. Not to take away their wins, they still won them, but I don't think they are clearly better than G'Town, Villanova, PC, Marquette, etc. Xavier may even be better than them this year.

Hard to argue with you Mike but they will have the confèrence player of the year , perhaps the conference rookie of the year,a bunch of very solid role players and a coach who gets the most out of his team that plays unselfishly and gives a great defensive effort. That is certainly a winning combination.
