Around the Big East '17-18

I know their resources are insane...my point was I wouldn't consider them a full-blown blue blood like a Duke, UK, Kansas, etc. Even a bottom level F5 school probably has tons more resources than Butler because of the conference affiliation and football i.e. Wake Forest. That was my point. OSU is a great sports school.
 
Ohio State has a great basketball tradition. They had a couple of off years just before Matta was let go, but as Fordham pointed out they were excellent for a long period before that. Their basketball legacy dates back to the NCAA championship team of 1961 which included NBA greats John Havlicek and Jerry Lucas. Big step up for Holman taking that job and no downside for BE to it at all.
 
OSU is better than I thought historically...just looked it up. It will be concerning though if we start losing these coaches to Wake Foest, Nebraska, Penn State, Minnesota, etc.

You would be wrong. From 2009 thru 2015 (After the Oden years) they went to the NCAA's every year-7 straight. From 2010 thru 2013, 4 year stretch, they won or shared 3 Big Ten regular season titles, finishing 2nd the other time, they won 3 Big 10 tourney titles, and from 2009 to 2013 they went to 5 straight Big 10 Tourney title games. Their NCAA seeding for that 4 year stretch from 2010 to 2013 was 2 seed, 1 seed, 2 seed, 2 seed. Went to at least the sweet 16 each of those 4 years, went to the Final Four in 2012 and Regional Final in 2013.

You could argue outside of maybe Michigan St (and it is close) Ohio St was the best Big 10 program for the better part of a decade under Thad Matta. That is a great job, with great resources and great recent history. You can't compare Butler to Ohio St. Not close.[/quote]

And the tax payers in Ohio foot the bill. Ohio State, like many football school states, has massive tax paid support that keep them relevant. In New York state, it is the complete opposite. That support on the part of those states obviously has led to successful programs with huge media income. OSU is not your typical college with over 60,000 students in Columbus and it is clearly the State's school in the capital.
It operates like a pro franchise, like Texas, Alabama and Kentucky. It has no problems selling 100,000 tickets to football games. It's all they got in Columbus.
All other college sports programs operate at a huge competitive disadvantage which, unless you are an alum, gives me and others great incentive to see them lose at every opportunity.

Four-star 2018 prospect Saddiq Bey just verbally committed to Villanova, he tells 247Sports.

Bey, a 6-foot-7 forward out of Washington (D.C.) Sidwell Friends, originally signed with NC State back in November, but on May 16th, Bey asked out of his Letter of Intent.
 
Recruiting just seems to get tougher and tougher for coaching staffs. Verbal commitments mean nothing. LOI's mean very little and as SJU saw with Wilson even when an athlete enrolls in a school other schools never stop enticing the athlete.

It will only get worse when the new transfer rules go into effect
We will then have the college version of free agency in professional sports

You are so right. I was scouting Larry Lembo out of Bishop Loughlin. Had a great relationship with this fine young man. Finally,. Louie, myself and the Vincentian moderator had dinner at the Lembo house where Larry told us he was committing to St.John's. Weeks later he called to inform me he was going to Manhatten College because the Christian Brothers pressured him. Larry, beside being a special young man, was an excellent basketball and baseball athlete. If you remember back then he became a very good basketball official. Always thought he was fair to us when he had our games.
 
Very true, recruiting has become a vipers nest.
That said, the best magnet with which to succeed with top talent is winning, and doing so consistently over the years.
Kind of like a Catch-22 or the proverbial ‘chicken and egg’, but there it is.
‘Win’...and they will come.

Larry was my PE teacher at Queensborough CC
He is a great guy
Reffed several Final Fours and also did the title game
 
I would love for the Knicks to draft Mikal Bridges tonight, he is a poor mans Kevin Durant and someone the Knicks could definitely use.

I’ve been very unimpressed with the players at the top of the draft.

Comparing Bridges to the second best player in NBA and maybe one of the top-15 NBA players of all time. He is much closer to Courtney Lee IMHO

I also heard Marcellus Earllington is a poor man's Charles Barkley while we are at it

One thing you can always count on
The Knicks and Jets sucking on draft night
I used to think that the only things that are guaranteed are death and taxes
As a long time depressed NY sports fan, I can attest to the fact that such is not the case
 
I love the Knox pick (albeit from what I’ve read about him pre-draft, having only watched one UK game this past season). Questions about MPJ’s health concerns weren’t worth the risk when there were other good players available.

I read that Memphis was shopping the 4th pick if a team was willing to take on Chandler Parson’s huge contract. I was hoping the Knicks would do it and get Bamba at 4 and Knox at 9.
