Around College Basketball

That's why Rick Pitino is the best of all time. Went 18-2 and won the conference with an A-10 caliber player shooting 26% from 3 and a turnover rate twice his assist rate starting
No doubt about PT’s coaching ability but to be fair, Wilcher’s turnover/assist rate were even. His 3pt shooting percentage was a hair higher than Scott’s was last year. Both poor.

Sim about to realize the grass isn't always greener, but he wasn't gonna see any time here with Jackson, Sanon, Sellers basically playing the same position.
Sim would be the starting PG here this year. Despite all the hate he's getting!
It isn't as though Pitino threw him out - to the contrary I believe he tried to retain him.
I always liked the kid and hope he reaches his potential at Texas. No dispute that he did not achieve that here the first two years.

Rick dangled him around. Trying (and ultimately succeeding) at overrecruiting him while saying he may try to develop him as a PG & paying him below market rate. He kind of gave Sim no choice.

Even I as an original Darling skeptic cannot see how anyone can be confident Sim would be playing over him. And over Sanon, Jackson and Sellers -- no way.

We all loved Sim, Brady and Glover. They are part of our community.
That said:
1. Sim has too loose of a handle to be a PG. He’s not a 2 because he can’t hit a 3
2. Brady had one good game. At Nova 2 years ago.
3. Glover is a backup.

CRP has made it clear that our players are professionals. His definition of player development is a now different. He will develop players for higher professional careers and not to spend 2-4 years developing as collegiate amateurs.

In a different era, they'd all be fun to watch grow together. But it's not that era anymore. Glover's freshman year had some bad luck with the injury, but if he showed more on the defensive end, I'd guess he would've been prioritized.

Dunlap clearly way too unathletic for this system and not reliable enough of a shooter. Sim may have been able to develop & take another leap this year, but why risk that when you can get three automatic upgrades and one guy who's an actual point guard?

Agree on Glover and Dunlap. I think they are both far better off where they currently are. If Glover has a nice season he should be able to package it into a nice NIL deal somewhere this offseason.

I think everyone was hoping that Sim would take a decent sized jump from his Soph to Junior year which is why Pitino kind of wanted to keep him. It's obvious he's not a PG by any stretch but he has good form on his shot and made strides on D last year. Maybe last night was just him struggling to get acclimated to a new system against a high level team but boy did it look like that Soph-Junior year jump never materialized. I'm sure he'll have a game or two against LSU or South Carolina where he goes 3/5 from 3 and scores 16 points, but there is nobody in our current rotation I'd even consider trading for him

The harder question to me is, do you take four years of hypothetical eligibility of an Odih or two years of Sim?

Sim last year getting significant minutes had:
- 6 games with 3 or more assists, never more than 5.
- 2 games with 3 or more steals.
- 5 games with 4 or more rebounds.

Give me Darling every single day of the week
I don't disagree with your conclusion, but Sim played with two 5th-year point guards as a true soph. Darling is a 4th-year junior with virtually no competition at the point.

Yeah but Rebounds and steals have to do with that? Also a large enough sample size IMO.

Darling in 17 minutes impacted every part of the game and he did on a poor shooting night. A poor shooting night for Sim meant a useless night far far too often.

Even though sim did have a lot of experience competition in the backcourt, he got plenty of opportunities to produce. Frankly I don’t know if sim ever looked as dynamic as Darling did in the quinnipiac game

As a big time Sim fan when he was here, that hurts to say

i would add that Sim played with a black hole at PG his freshman year and did not play PG his sophomore year. Getting assists was not his role.

I also think it's premature to compare his stats to Darling after one game vs. Quinnipiac.

Was it premature to call him a walk on after one game vs Towson?
