A few thoughts:

Isn't part of recruiting: (A) making sure that a kid will be academically eligible before offering a scholarship? Seems poor research to lose "blue chip" recruits right before the season starts because of grades. ( B ) Making sure that the recruit will be a good fit for the team before an offer? ( C ) Once landed, ensure that the recruit is properly integrated into the team and any issues are quickly resolved?

I have never recruited a HS or JuCo kid but I have hired a lot of green talent out of college and always made sure of (a) (b) (c) above through interviews, references, transcripts, role playing, on the job training, etc. The kid has to have the right qualifications, experience, grades, attitude, hunger etc. or they do not get a job offer.

I know this statement is akin to heresy on this board, but I think our Coaches did a poor job in the above. In their defense, hindsight is 20-20 and Coach Lavin's illness cannot have helped. I was as excited as anyone last August. I sure hope we turn this around.

If your premise was true, there would be no such thing as divorce in this country. There is no such thing as on the job training in recruitment. The staff took some chances that did not work out. However, if you look this realistically, we have five first year players and Malik Stith who are committed to being at St Johns. Amir Garrett will be here in less than two weeks. So while we may take some lumps this year, we have a solid foundation for the future.
Additionally, recruiting is not an exact science. Remember this, Coach Lavin and his staff had to out recruit some established programs to land the class that they did. Also, the recruits that did not qualify probably would not have qualified no matter what school they chose.

It's nearly impossible to replace an entire roster with 12 new players and expect to retain all of them. Lots of the more talented kids have some academic risks. I think that if we had all the kids at different places, instead of Rose we probably would have had Garrett and maybe one more eligible right now. We learn from mistakes. Nobody was going to be able to make a guy like Lindsey happy,so he left. The loss is on,y compounded because we've had a few bad breaks and have a thin roster. In another season with a few more scholarship players, we wouldn't notice a guy leaving or a kid not qualifying.

Even before the cancer thing and ineligible recruits, Lavin said this would be his most challenging coaching season ever. It was an understatement. Lavin always said though, that this year was the foundation for big success 2 or 3 years down the line which is certainly reasonable for a massive rebuild.

Bottom line though, is that we need Lavin back ASAP as our full-time coach to reassure existing players and potential ones. We have a great staff, but the kids want to play for Lavin.

I think its ignorant to try and compare the two....its sooo apples and oranges what youre comparing.
When youre left with a totally empty cupboard, you have to take some risks, and lavin did. Not for anything he did a phenomenal job....these kids were juniors, had a full year of school to get their grades in order, how is that lavins fault? If we were 2 years down the road with these problems, maybe theres room for concern, however this year was going to be filled with growing pains whether or not everyone was here. Yes, we had the top 3 recruiting class, however the highest recruit was in the 30s. Its not like the fab 5 years ago when 4 were in the top ten. Be realistic, too many people had high aspirations for this team this year and thats on them...coach lav said it would take a couple of years. tired of people jumping off the bandwagon this year, and theyll be the same ones next year jumping back on when we have 2 seniors, 5 sophs and 6 new guys and are winning the majority of our games and back in the ncaas. Bunch of fair weathered fans on this flippin board

Lavin and staff took a risk, and it partially did not work out. Kansas lost 3 recruits too. The problem was that the prior staff let 10 kids graduate all in the sma e year. Norm did that for a reason (have a good year and be retained). The athletic dept did not want Norm to recruit the next wave of St Johns players and got rid of him. In hindsight, Lavin should have added a few more safe guys (3 star recruits, no academic concerns) but then we would have complained that they were Norm-type players. This sets us back a year but hopefully Lavin can get quality guys to get back up to 11-12 scholarship players for next season in addition to the 7 we have plus Wood and the mystery shooter. We need Gathers back along with another big (Obekpa or Sidiki?) and a point guard to get us to the 2013 recruiting class.

Exactly! Lavin had to take some chances, considering he had to recoup an entire roster. Panther also made a good point. Lavin and the staff actually came in late into the game and were still able to beat out some solid programs for the services of these kids.

Lavin knew we would take some lumps this season even with a full roster. But, he also felt we would be in position to make a ton of noise the following year. Quite frankly, I still believe we'll make noise next season, as we currently have a solid foundation. I also wouldn't bet against Lavin when it comes to landing significant talent in the '12 class. If everything comes to fruition, then I believe we'll be a top 15 team a season from now.

rawdog there were several folks whining and complaining last season around this time. We all saw how that turned out. I think there is less complaining now, but still there is enough of it going around, nonetheless. Those will be the same ones who'll be crawling their way back on the 'wagon before the season is done or next season.

You know there would've been some complaining from the usual suspects had Lavin signed 2 or more 3-star kids. He went after kids who he thought could instantly play or be able to play on the Big East level. The key is seeing who else we're gonna land from the 2012 class. Quite frankly, I believe our current crop can play on the Big East level.

This season probably will be tough for them, but there is gonna be a couple of games where they are gonna surprise us. The key is retaining the entire bunch for next season and garnering a very, solid 2012 class. I believe we're in good position for a handful of guys in the 2013 class.

On the bright side, this core group of 7 guys will gain invaluable experience this year add the new comers next year will be need guys. Lavin is too good a recruiter to not add the players that we need.

Recruiting is really tiresome work. I hope Lavin is well enough to do this, but I wouldnt be surpriusedif he is not able to go at recruiting full strength this year.

Baldwin?

I came back sooner than I had planned. Attacking a coach for having cancer really got me tight. I had to calm down a bit.

Yes Baldwin.

I don't blame you but this site is like an addiction I just keep checking it. And when I see posts like the ones about Lavin and cancer I get this desire to make those people look foolish.

I hope we can get that "shooter" on board. We can certainly use him.

is the "shooter" the same mystery recruit we were looking for on one of the other boards a couple of years ago?

No, that kid could not get the requisite grades, but boy could he ball.

Is it finally safe to say who that kid was? :(
