Any Other News?

On twitter I saw that Nate Blue posted ppl kept asking him if Moe was going to leave and his response to the people asking was "Why? lol" implying that Moe is not leaving and it seems he didn't even understand why people would think he would. IMO Nuri was a rotten apple. Even if the kids are upset Lavin can't coach right now there are a couple of factors I look at:

1) the guy who recruited you had surgery for cancer, its not like he abandoned you, and you can't just bail (Lav is in constant communication with the team)

2) even if you decide to leave, by the time you are eligible to play bball again at another school, coach Lavin will be coaching at SJU again, so what are you really gaining? Even if Lavin does not coach until next fall, none of these kids would be eligible until next spring, and therefore, they are losing a year of playing for no reason.

All in all, once Amir comes and hopefully coach returns we will be fine. The makeuo if the 6 current guys + Amir is great for the future, and I love Woods' game. Even if we dont get some of the other guys back. Again, people knock Stith's talent, but he has proven he is a high character kid, and I think its immportant the guys have that.

You are right, Stith seems to be a high character. Also, remember some of these people who knock Stith's talent also thought Lindsey would be one and done and maybe going to the NBA from JUCO.

I am told there are no problems with any of the remaining players. Amir is excited to be coming along with Wood next spring. Lavin has 5 more guys to bring in and 2 the following year. If nothing changes, we will be getting a transfer from another school in a few weeks per what I heard in Kentucky. I don't want to pin anything on Nuri, but he may have been the problem wit these rumors of dissension. Need Coach back ASAP to get the ship stabilized.

We were going to have a tough year anyway, well its just a tougher year.

Yes I think this sets us back a bit, perhaps a year but I would not trade this for 2009-2010 with the Norm regime for example,

Is the transfer Cummings ? Because it was rumored he was walking on. The transfer is a different player entirely correct?

The transfer is not Cummings, if true he will be a 2/3 who can shoot. Likely not to be able to play until spring 12 at earliest.

A few thoughts:

Isn't part of recruiting: (A) making sure that a kid will be academically eligible before offering a scholarship? Seems poor research to lose "blue chip" recruits right before the season starts because of grades. ( B ) Making sure that the recruit will be a good fit for the team before an offer? ( C ) Once landed, ensure that the recruit is properly integrated into the team and any issues are quickly resolved?

I have never recruited a HS or JuCo kid but I have hired a lot of green talent out of college and always made sure of (a) (b) (c) above through interviews, references, transcripts, role playing, on the job training, etc. The kid has to have the right qualifications, experience, grades, attitude, hunger etc. or they do not get a job offer.

I know this statement is akin to heresy on this board, but I think our Coaches did a poor job in the above. In their defense, hindsight is 20-20 and Coach Lavin's illness cannot have helped. I was as excited as anyone last August. I sure hope we turn this around.

If your premise was true, there would be no such thing as divorce in this country. There is no such thing as on the job training in recruitment. The staff took some chances that did not work out. However, if you look this realistically, we have five first year players and Malik Stith who are committed to being at St Johns. Amir Garrett will be here in less than two weeks. So while we may take some lumps this year, we have a solid foundation for the future.
Additionally, recruiting is not an exact science. Remember this, Coach Lavin and his staff had to out recruit some established programs to land the class that they did. Also, the recruits that did not qualify probably would not have qualified no matter what school they chose.

I've hired a bunch of people too and some of this stuff should have emerged in the most basic vetting process. What disturbs me more is the total lack of a fallback position leaving us with but a remnant of a BE team due mainly to simple math and a lousy recruiting strategy. Fact is there were never enough minutes to accomodate a team composed of a dozen stars. Norm found that out stacking up six 2 guards and never having the brainpower to utilize them properly. Then Lavin comes in and takes the same team to the dance. This year the problem is numbers and the tail end of the bench should have been filled with role players with some upside and special skills we can use. Blue chippers don't want to split games and they've been coddled to the point where you can't control them. The whole thing reads like a Stephen King novel and you really can't make it up. How we choose the 47 year old coach with cancer is unbelievable really after all we've been through. I truly care about him and his unavoidable bad break but I also care about our team which is again in shambles - very avoidably so.
