Anton Goff Leaving?
Rumblings that he may be leaving, no clue why.
Bit off more than he can chew? Doesn't sound good regardless.

If he's not allowed to have a bite of the best part of the food, who can blame him for not wanting to eat the meal?

Interesting...I remember my friend saying Goff bounces around a lot from school to school. If true though, I really hope we bring someone in who at least takes fan issues seriously. He did bring us lots of new gear as we begged for in addition to some CA changes (unless those were going to happen anyway). Not sure how much he was directly responsible for things. He does seem to get tons of photo ops but beyond that not sure. He also had loose lips so who knows? Maybe he's going to a F5 school.

Not surprising if true that he has less direct involvement on basketball matters.

He's also been absent from his usual St Johns official retreats etc over past few weeks.

If we need AD again, Ed Manetta went to Manhattanville College last fall. Wonder if that would materialize for interest either way. I'd think they would go for new blood again though.

I am under the impression that he was not at Mullin/Lou C Golf Outing either.

I would think that Goff may be frustrated that almost anything regarding money has to be run through the president. Anything I've ever asked about the answer is the same - Bobby is considering. That goes for tiny things - like where to place the Lapchick statue, budgetary things, like freezing hires for the athletic department and freezing salaries, when to buy that Carnesecca statue, etc. The decision to renovate or build a new arena is so far above the sole discretion of the AD that it's not even worth discussing.

I loved that Goff is so enthusiastic about our teams, but when it comes down to it, we need a competent, empowered AD, and not just a cheerleader. We need an AD that can approve the hire of a new assistant for Mullin, or tell Mullin in no uncertain terms, no, on this or any other issue. Empowered. Has a budget. Doesn't have to run everything up the bobby G. flagpole.

All of the above, while true, is basically speculation as to why he may leave. For all I know, it may be that SJU isn't too pleased with his performance.

I know nothing about the financial working of the University, but from where I sit, it looks like a benevolent dictatorship. Bobby hangs onto the purse strings like a little old underpaid parent after payday. I don't think we will ever see an empowered A.D., for that matter, I don't think we will ever see anyone but the President (whoever he or she is) run the treasury.
St. John's on one hand realizes the importance of financing it's athletics programs, but must/wants to do it in the most frugal way possible.

When have we ever had an AD who hasn't immediately had his nuts cut off? May as well hire a women as we could save money on the medical procedure. Of course a woman wouldn't last long in the job either if she has any ambition as she would soon realize she hasn't got the authority given to real ADs.

Mike Maher may be available as long as the job does not get in the way of his favorite TV shows.

You would think that the Wilpons are running St. John's basketball.

SJU has never gone top shelf in hiring a replacement for Carnesecca, Lapchick for that matter, hiring the assistant coach Lou.

Frank McGuire was an easy heist by North Carolina but simply paying him the extra 2 thousand or so he needed to help medical bills for a sick kid (if memory serves me correctly)

When Lou left for the Nets, they hired assistant Frank Mulzoff at a salary of about 18,000 - what SJU faculty was paid.

So is it any wonder that we slipped from the ranks of the high echelon teams to the bottom rungs of the Big East and among the dogs of college basketball.

After Mahoney and Fraschilla were gone, they "went very deep" for SJU but not the market to pay Jarvis a salary of 700-800K, which included to and sneaker money. When Jarvis derailed, they scaled back to a lower salary for Roberts, as if Jarvis' wipeout proved you should pay that kind of money. They "opened the vault" for Lavin, but still his salary wasn't in the range of elite coaches, and he was sort of damaged goods. Mullin is essentially making what Lavin was paid once sticker shock wore off and they also realized the uncertainty that $2 million would buy.

Big East basketball generates a lot of money. The way SJU operates is sort of the way small market baseball teams do with their revenue share of tv money. Bank it.

I'm sure Goff came cheap coming from Hartford, and I really don't know if he is or isn't capable of running the athletic department, or he is simply not given the chance.

Aggravated today about other stuff. Sorry for the negativity.

Thanks for the accurate—if unhappy recap—Beast.
Don’t know how things change structurally.
Usually the most difficult changes to comprehend, let alone implement.

St John's athletic department has always been run like a mom and pop shop rather than a multi million dollar entity.
I wish that people in a position of authority would recognize this and make the proper adjustments
I've been connected with St John's for more than 50 years and believe that it will always be the status quo

He's an upbeat positive influence and great cheerleader. I would wish him well. Next hire needs to be a strong executive type leader.

Who is also a puppet.

Regardless of what the situation is, I truly hope the admin realizes how much fans appreciated being heard and being able to interact on social media directly with Goff. Even if nothing was taken into consideration, it's still nice to see voices heard. Going with the mom and pop adage, I got the VIP seats for Red Storm Tipoff and one of the women in charge showed me and my friend to the seats on the court. Initially, when I showed the tickets to a worker upon entry, they had no clue where the seats were and had to ask several different people. When I noticed literally every seat except the VIP seats had free t-shirts except ours, I asked if it would be possible to get a free shirt. I mean, other fans came for free and get a free shirt and I paid almost $100 and was told "no". I know this seems off topic but just furthers the notion and culture. Now proceed with the expected shirt jokes lol.

I wouldn’t blame him. What’s the point of being the AD here if you have little say when it comes to the basketball program?

I truly believe in my heart that if Goff had full control Mullin wouldn’t be here right now. So I can’t blame him for looking for better pastures.

Peace out
