Anderson - is he really the guy ?

Rarely do great basketball players make great coaches. I believe Lenny Wilkins and Tommy Heinsohn are the only 2 who have been inducted in to the HOF as both a player and as a coach.

Exactly how did Mullin become a coaching candidate at SJU?  Lavin had a decent up and down team that got an NCAA bid, and if Chris O. doesn't test positive for marijuana, would have had a decent shot at beating SD St. in that first round game.
Lavin still had a year left on his contract at, I think, around two million. I understand the arguments for and against Lavin, but how and when did Mullin come into play, and who was involved?

Obekpa testing positive for marijuana just about sums up Lavin's tenure of headaches, with the lack of control he had over the team. How easily we forget that Rysheed Jordan was allowed to travel back to Philly on weekends or whenever he felt. Obekpa had plenty of other issues as well. All I used to read about on this board was about how Lavin cared more about dining in Soho than working with the team or recruiting. It's surprising to read that so many wanted to retain him, especially since had very little coming in the following year in terms of recruits.
Not saying that Lavin had a great recruiting class, but he did have three good quality guards coming in when he was fired (one of whom even got a cup of coffee in the NBA). And he had a handful of serviceable players that would have stayed. It wouldn't have been a good winning season in the least, but it wasn't like we wouldn't have been able to field a team.

Add Bill Russell to the list.

Russell coached the  Boston Celtics to back to back  NBA Championships in 1968 and 1969.

Otis is he in the HOF as a coach also?

Russell also joined Bill Sharman, John Wooden in both categories

Monte, add Bill Sharman and Bill Russell to that list.

Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame: Full list of players to also be inducted as coaches | NBA.com Canada | The official site of the NBA

Three of the 5 were former Celtics.

Regarding Lavin, I've said it before that as a world-class procrastinator, I can immediately spot another world-class procrastinator. But the major problem was that I think he had other stuff going on in his personal life so he wasn't even 100 percent focused on recruiting even at the 11th hour.

I can't even remember everyone from Lavin's staff, but I'm sure if you swapped some guys out for better ones the Mullin era may not have happened. Then again, that whole thing with Bobby G. falling in love with the idea of Mullin may have been too much to overcome. But maybe someone should have told Bobby G. to tell Mullin it was a 12-month gig beforehand.

Are you saying that it took you 11 years to get around to posting this?

That's why I think he should have been given another couple years with short leash after that because he brought on Whitesell which I think would have benefited him long term his next year wouldn't have been good but lets seee what the year after would have been and make decision then

This sums up the Mullin years for me

Never draw a play when your shoe is untied.

Great find !

I'll always have a soft spot for Lavin for making us relevant again that first year. Lots of highlights that year and who knows what might have happened but for the DJ injury. Ironically he did better with Norm's recruits than he did with his own much more highly touted recruits.

This comment (about swapping) made me think.  How about........

Head Coach:  Mike Anderson
Associate Head Coach:  Mike Dunlap
Asst Coach:  Van Macon
Asst. Coach:  Matt A.
Dir. Basktball Operations:  Chris Huey

Obviously, with no games being played, just wishful dreaming.

I will as well. And I gained even more respect for him as a person after he was fired and was hired at Fox. A true lesson in humility when he had to speak about a St. John's program that fired him and did so with tons of class and integrity. He's always spoken extremely highly of the school since leaving and never harbored any resentment. Many would have taken an ego hit and held a grudge.

Also note that in his last year he was hampered in recruiting by the speculation that he would be fired. It's near impossible to recruit with that hanging over your head, yet he still got some commitments from some decent players.

I don't see anything wrong with Anderson's current staff that should make you wish for something different.

I don't have any problem with CMA's staff.  Just having fun with a suggested all-star staff.
