Amir Garrett Leaving St. John's

Amir - Best of luck in all of your future endeavors.

Thanks for choosing StJ at a time when your name added credibility to our program.

We'll all look forward to seeing you when the Reds vists Citifieled.

Thanks for your service Amir. You always represented yourself & the university well both on and off the court.

Best of Luck with the Reds and the MLB.

Amir was an easy guy to root for. I will be interested in following his career in baseball and basketball. Good Luck.

You were a pleasure to root for and represented the University proudly!

Amir - Best of luck.

Thanks for choosing StJ.

We'll root for you in the future whatever you do.

Good luck, Amir. And thanks for all your hard work, effort and commitment. We will miss you and wish you nothing but the best.

Another poster brought it up but the roster instability for various reasons under Lavin is a major concern . The program needs stability,we need players that are going to grow into a system, not the excuse of our team is young and every year we have new players that need to adjust to the big east etc. Losing Garrett is a big deal IMHO his play has been consistent, he is a great role player for this program and could get the minutes to help this team on defense.

I will miss Amir, I believe that he is a fine young man who represented SJU very well. It is very difficult to play two sports well, and I think he would have had to put a great deal of effort into the off season in order to progress. Good luck!!!

Amir was a warrior, and gave 100% His loss will be less for his BB contributions than for his fire and passion (which I am sure he exhibited in practice and the locker room).

Can't wish him enough well wishes and luck in the future. Thank you for your dedication to the school and the program. You're a class act. Hopefully, you will be throwing peas at the Mets in a few years.

Thanks Amir. Thanks for your hustle, your work around the rim, your athleticism. Wish you the best in whatever you do.

As for our program, time to use the scholarship on key pieces. We need shooters. Watching the tourney these past couple of weeks, i see the direct correlation to success. It's time

+1 Amir transfering is not in any way shape or form a positive for our program. By all accounts Amir was a good kid who left it all out on the court. Amir may not have been primed to be a "go to guy" for us next year, but with his effort and skills, he would continue to have a role. Nearly every successful team has a gritty veteran who is willing to leave it all on the floor. Amir could have been that for us

It would be one thing if he were leaving the program to devote himself to baseball full time, but his statements suggest otherwise. Amir demonstrated loyalty to the program during a difficult time and the fact that he now (after two years) apparently plans to transfer somewhere else does not speak well of his experience here. While transfers happen to even the best programs, we've had a steady inflow of transfers, suspensions and ineligibility rulings with very little offseting positive news.

I said it last off-season and I will say it again -- the signs are troubling.

Best of luck to Amir!! Amir will wind up at a school where he can excel in the basketball program without having to devote his whole year to it. He will wind up at a mid major where he is more talented basketball wise than most of the kids on the team anyway, so missing the summer will not matter as much.

Last year there was a record number of transfers in the NCAA. This is what happen when you use up all of your scholarships.

Amir's game did not expand. What we saw us who he is. Maybe a more consistent jumper as a Senior but he is a slashing wing with not much to it than that. He got plenty of minutes, touches and shots in our last game vs. Virginia. And all I saw was playground AAU ball for him.

If he left on bad terms (Re: Nuri), I'd say yeah something is wrong. But someone had to go. We all knew this.

He'll be fine and for his sake I hope he can go to a place where he can get the attention/opportunity that he's looking for.

But he is replaceable. Sounds harsh but it's true.

Good luck Amir! I absolutely love this kid. His dedication to himself academically and the program last year was laudable. And his game, while dissected here mercilessly, belied his service as the proverbial "glue guy". I for one will miss him.

what he brought to the table was a constant warrior. Like many Johnnies from the past, whatever they lacked in skill, it was made up in heart. I think Amir was an old school johnnie. He was true to us when things were bleek ( sat out and guarenteed he'd be here ), and seemed to me he always showed class. He never tweeted anything stupid, nor did his court attitude look distracting. He was old school and the Johnnie fans will miss him. Good Luck Buddy, hope to see you get traded to the Yankees so you can get rich and we can see you play all the time. Good Luck.

We now have room for Jon Severe and Rysheed Jordan.

No there is not room for both. Those complaining about roster instability, you do realize the team was returning all 13 scholarship players including the transfer, redshirt and NCAA cleared three, unless DLo doesn't make it back. But for now it's down to 12 with a spot for Jordan if he wants to come. Severe can't be recruited over him so until the 15th that's where it stands. I would also say that if the staff thought Dlo wasn't coming back they would be more aggressively interested in Severe.

Also agree with the poster who showed how the depth situation at the 4/5 has changed 180 degrees in just two years, from only GG and an out of posistion Moe and Amir to a full compliment of players.

Amir obviously is a great and dedicated kid who was a great example for the school and team and he'll be missed but he's not irreplaceable nor was he going to be in the top 8 of the rotation next year. If he wants to play more than that somewhere else before finally committing to baseball full time who can honestly blame him.

Like most everyone else I wish him the best of luck.

First of all, best of luck to Amir, great guy and great teammate.

Now I'll say, I don't get how people can say him leaving is a bad sign. It was obvious his role on the team was diminishing each year. It was only natural that when Lavin had to bring in that large class, things were going to get uneven and people wouldn't have roles. Like someone else also pointed out, since he can't focus on basketball in the summer like his teammates, others were going to be able to pass him on the depth chart. In fact, many mentioned they didn't see much growth out of him from last year to this year. With Sanchez and God's Gift next year, and Jones showing flashes this year, we'll be just fine up front.

Good Luck Amir, you will be missed. I hope to see you pitching in the bigs some day soon.

I thought I remember hearing on a telecast last year that for some reaon Amir was not on scholarship & he was paying his own way. Can anyone confirm that?
