Amir Garrett Leaving St. John's

Best of luck Amir. Thanks for choosing us and thanks for sticking with us when you couldnt come on time. Loved reading your tweets about coming here and how you hit the books to get here

@Amir_Garrett: After a long thought out process of speaking with my family, I will be leaving St. John's basketball program!

@Amir_Garrett: It was a well thought out decision that didn't just pop up out of nowhere. St. John's will always have a special place in my heart.

@Amir_Garrett: As of now I'm playing baseball, but I plan on being at another program in the fall.

"Will be at another program in the fall." I guess the move is about more than his baseball career. Appreciated his sticking with us his freshman year and playing hard every game. I am sure that the speculation and finger pointing will begin soon.

I know most on these boards will think this is no big deal, but losing Garrett hurts. He had a disappointing season but he is a warrior.

You never want to lose talented players, but it is fair to question how many minutes he was going to get next year for them

Sir'Dom, JaKarr, Obekpa, Sanchez, and God's Gift were all going to be ahead of him on the depth chart. After his last few games this season, it can be argued that Christian would push Amir for minutes as well.

Sorry to see Amir go. One of those kids that represented the program very well and gave his best effort every game. I suspect his professional career is in baseball, but enjoyed what he brought to our program.

Amir, thanks for taking a chance on St. John's and giving us two good years! Best of luck!

doesn't SJU have a pretty good baseball program ?? well i guess it would it have been too awkward for him to stay here & just switch sports & have to be amongst his old teammates everyday in cafeteria, hallways etc. guess he does kinda need a clean slate somewhere else

like the kid a lot but lets be honest not a big loss. do we get the ship rightaway and what will lavin use it on hopefully a shooter

Nice kid.. Probably a decision that Lavin helped him with. With his summer committed to baseball, I don't see how he could have worked on his game to improve where he had to play at this level.

Amir, wish you well. Hopefully his future includes MLB, a program where he can log major BB minutes, and a college degree.

Not a big loss IMHO! Cooler coaches have a certain way of making a choice to leave very easy! Amir is a 66 power forward with zero basketball knowledge.... I wonder what the bigger picture is?

I think the writing was kind of on the wall with Amir. Pitching in the summer and BigEast basketball in the winter just wasn't going to work.

With that said, Im very thankful we had him for a year and a half. I think his dedication on becoming academically eligible to play here when he clearly had more lucrative prospects is commendable to say the least. Class act!

All the best to Amir, and thanks for staying committed under difficult circumstances last year. Had he not arrived when he did last year could have been really ugly. Seems like a terrific kid. Dissapointed to be losing him not only because I think he would have been a solid contributor but because he was a team guy. Always seemed pumped up for his teammates, whether on the court or from the bench, and it seemed like everyone really liked him. Played hard whether he was getting 25 minutes or 10. It's cliche, but you need glue guys like that.

All of that said I can certainly understand why Amir would consider transferring, between baseball and what our roster may look like. I also fully understand why we've had so much roster upheaval the last two seasons (9 seniors, taking risks, etc.), which have been stated repeatedly. It's also become an inherent part of the game even for teams without those circumstances.

I just hope we are moving towards a place with more stability. Our roster has literally been a revolving door for 24 consecutive months between the ineligibles and the transfers. Amir is one of the more understandable departures for both parties, and it seems like an amicable one. But it would still be nice to go a few months without a transfer, ineligible, or suspension. Hopefully next year is the year we get over the hump on the court and in this regard.

He has signed a professional baseball contract he can not play baseball in college.
