Alabama (MSG), Sat., Nov. 8, 12 Noon, FS-1/ 1050 AM

Back to the game...

It was a pleasure to watch an exciting game against an outstanding team at this point of the season. Very exciting! 17 thousand in the house. It takes the sting out of a loss.

We're going to look like the Alcindor UCLA teams next week against William and Mary. Maybe a few "gimmies" like W & M will help. As you can see, this isn't last year's defensive juggernaut. Our three point and free throw shooting is on a par with last year's gang that couldn't shoot straight.

I'm not one to second guess...but Pitino knew Alabama is one of the best scoring machines in the country. That's what he told everyone. Why opt to go toe to toe with these guys? His practices played right into the Crimson's hands. So did the game. If you step into the ring with Mike Tyson, you don't try to outslug him. You outbox him. Pitino should have tried to play this game in the 60s or 70s. It wouldn't have been exciting...but we had no chance otherwise.

Oh, well...there's always William and Mary to get those stats up. Go Johnnies!!
Everyone needs to remember what we felt like after the Baylor game last year

They have 5 we have 4.
This could be a bit misleading. Their 5 play much bigger roles on their team than all but 1 on our team do.

It's: Holloway, Philon, Mallette, Sherrel and Wrightsell. 4 starters and a key reserve that represent 4 starters, 124 minutes and 63 shots from the field versus Zuby, Ayo, Prey and Lefty. 1 starter, 58 minutes and 19 shots from the field.

(stats from today's game)

i think the reason I’m not as down about this loss is I liked some things I saw from our guards

No, we couldn’t stop Alabama. But look at Alabama’s schedule last year. Look at their wins. This is what they do when they win. They score a ton. They are in the upper echelon of teams in the country in that regard.

But I thought Jackson and Sellers both hit some nice shots down the stretch when the game was going back and forth before the last 5 minutes. Ian in particular had some impressive drives and finishes. He is small though.

Overall I thought they rose to the occasion offensively in the second half in a way that I didn’t know they had in them cause I hadn’t seen it yet. I was encouraged. Defensively we are definitely a big time work in progress…. For our next stretch of big games hopefully we have our attack dog darling to help set the tone

Best part of the game for me was getting to meet and sit with @Jnaw17. Great guy!

As for the team, it's easy to forget how we looked at this point last year. Last year's team at this point in the season probably would have been destroyed by Alabama.

I'm actually way more optimistic. I think we have huge upside, and it's just up to Pitino to unlock it. I really think this is the most talented roster we've had in decades.
Room 112, you’re a great guy. I have to say that we have a tremendously talented team but I’m already tired of our hall of fame coach being out coached by everybody outside of the BE. Zuby was unstoppable tonight until his coach f’d that up. Our coach needs to stop trying to be the smartest guy in the room and remember that his players are the ones that won him these f’ng games.

We have a good and dangerous team. We don’t have chemistry yet. These guys seem to not know each other. I think we will be good once BE play starts. Also FT shots killed us. Lastly is it me or do some of the players on the team seem to rush their FT shots? Like when they go to shoot they can’t wait to get the ball out of their hands.

Good points......especially about Pitino. Oats played rope a dope and Pitino allowed his team to get punked in their own house.
Defensively our guards were embarrassed by one step back and pump fake after another. Our shooting from the outside was mid-major compared to Bama. No one exhibited a natural gift for shooting the ball. Delonte West on crack would have shown better shooting form.
Sanon and Jackson need to step up a division on the court. For what they negotiated in NIL they would be benched in most top 25 programs. Our front court will be fine .....our backcourt has gotten burned now by both Michigan and Alabama.
That tells me we are closer to the bottom 20 than the top 10.

Wasn't a game for Lefty. Alabama is a team that doesn't help off shooters so he would have just been standing on the perimeter without getting the ball all game.

We attempted 17 3s today. All of them we either contested or Alabama purposely let Zuby, Prey, Hopkins take them
Wasn’t a game for Lefty, wasn’t a game for Darling but it was a game for three guys who by and large stunk up the court on both ends.
Who couldn’t cover on the perimeter or stop guys from laying the ball in the basket or get us into any semblance of an organized offense. 6 assists and six TOs between them.
Who only scored when putting their heads down and playing one on one playground ball.
And for the record, they very well may “get it”; I don’t predict the future nor project what was to what will be. I don’t have the ability to presuppose what players will do before they step on the court like some have obviously been blessed with. But very early all 3 look more like projects than a back court of championship caliber.

We are merely top 25 team with top 10 transfer ranking.

This season, it will be difficult to see the team develop during the mid-season like last year because there is no player with the leadership (all aspects of defense, offense, rebounding, and assists) of Kadary Richmond.

Disappointing loss, but I think today had more to do with alabamas amazing guard play than some serious flaw that we have. Sure, ncaa tourney runs are usually built on guard play and ours have some way to go…but despite getting very little off our guards both offensively and defensively…we still went toe to toe with one of the best guard-laden teams in the nation. We will improve - ricks teams always do!

Zuby and Hopkins completely dominated the first half offensively. Don’t understand why they weren’t a focal point of the second half - including slowing the game down. But maybe that’s the difference between an early season game and a late one.

Sellers finally got going a bit in the second half with the mid range game. Jackson had some great moves in the second half, some with great finishes and others with inexplicably bad ones. He looked tentative or playing too fast due to nerves at times - this will also improve.

We didn’t have the rhythm we will have at years end - how could we expect otherwise ? A squad of mostly transfers with the best and most polished are our big men? To expect different probably not reasonable.

We are overrated for how good we are now. We may not be overrated for where we are at seasons end. I do worry in the tourney that our lack of guard play could be our downfall but we got almost nothing out of sanon and no consistency out of sellers and Jackson - I’m willing to bet that’s not the case come January and certainly come March. Our guards are too talented, especially offensively, for that to not improve considerably.

MSG was electric and we haven’t even hit Veterans Day - amazing atmosphere, and looking forward to a great season. It’s a long one - let’s not overreact….

I was at the game yesterday and I knew that Darling was out. I was thinking Lefty would see some action. Didn't see him play at all. What did I miss?

Easier to teach defense to athletic kids than offense to kids with hands of stone.

If we can get there, should be a great season. If we can't, at least it won't be boring.

Being bored rooting for your favorite teams absolutely sucks.
Great post.

Frustrating loss yesterday, but never dull. This will be a fun team to watch this season -- all kinds of talent.

(Surprising to catch up on this thread and no discussion of "lateral quickness"...)

Excellent post, agree with almost all of it.

I don't think there was ever a chance that Pitino was going to slow the game down to try to eke out a win. His agenda was to compete with Bama on their terms, that was the learning lesson for this game. He wanted to win, but he wanted to do it matching an athletic and up tempo opponent.

I did wonder why the focus in the second half shifted from the front court where we had been successful to the guards. I didn't see an adjustment from Bama that would have compelled that but maybe I missed something. Just felt to me like Pitino chewed out the guards at halftime so they looked for more of their offense in the second half at the expense of what had been mostly working.

That, plus really good management by Oats, also allowed Bama to manage their foul trouble for a lot longer than was reasonable. This is the third year where I have felt we have poor recognition of defenders with foul trouble and failed to take advantage of it for points or getting them out of the game.

Anyway I think for Pitino this was a game where his team was not a finished product and he used the game to try to move them along that arc. And there were some encouraging signs, despite the loss. At a minimum it created tape to show some players what is needed against high level competition.

The sky is not falling.

Agree Kadary will be missed the most. Also Aaron and Deivion made several big time defensive plays in the final minutes of several games.

So, you got all of this after watching us play our second game of the season against a quality opponent?
