After 2 exhibition games

Def have the depth, I'd like to see straight up man, the zone gives up too many open three balls.

Ideally I agree but the new rules is why we'll likely see more zone. But we've been poor at defending the three so let's see how the zone plays out. I was surprised to see only 15 fouls committed in each of the two exh games so it seems to me that this has been definitively on the minds of the staff and part of the game plan. There has been a few horror stories already about fouls and free throws extending games into the ridiculous. If I'm not mistaken, Wisconsin had one of those foul fest exh games.

I think we are all hoping the team achieves some very high goals this season,i.e NCAA appearance and top 25 ranking.

A number of posters here, all loyal SJU fans, have touted the athleticism of the team members but, haven't addressed how well do these players fit as a team? We'll know soon enough, Friday nite especially.

Lavin hasn't really impressed as a superb teacher and game Coach. As a recruiter he's shown he can attract athletic players but, are they good BB players?

Bo Ryan, on the other hand, will put out a tall, well coached, rugged team that plays his style .. Does Lavin have a style or, does he roll the balls out? Whitsell has a impressive resume, as did Dunlap but, can our individual talent be molded into a winning program?

Stay Tuned..

Lavin says STJ likes to play up and down, but the team doesnt press much, and only pushes the ball occasionally. What is the team's system?

We need to press. Simple as that. What's the point of all the athletes, length, and depth if we don't use it?

Too many whistles will kill the flow of these games . In our first exb game SF ST seemed to be whistled a lot and the first half took forever.

Sir Dom at the top of the press sounds about right

If we do press, Obekpa becomes our biggest weapon. Because of a shot blocker like him, if the press gets beat, the possession is not lost.

Did Lavin use more pressure defenses at UCLA? If so, why not use that here? When you have the kind of length, speed and quickness that he has now, why not press full court? There is enough depth to avoid concerns about fatigue. This team's enemy is the half court, trading baskets game. Jarvis had enough sense, when he had Hatten and a team of pretty athletic but undersized and shooting challenged players, to utilize their best asset-the ability to create havoc with their energy and quickness. There is far more skill and athleticism here now. Make the other guy deal with our strengths. Wisconsin should be an interesting test. You don't want to get into a half court game with them.

The only thing I remember Jarvis doing with the Hatten-led teams were they played his usual man-to-man defense. I could be wrong, but I don't recall him doing anything much differently.

The only sense Jarvis had was to target Hatten, and. eventually. land him.

I hope we see more pressing defenses this season. The Johnnies occasionally did it last season, but we could see it more this season, considering Lavin has more tools and depth to work with.

Defending against a 3 on 2, 2 on 1 break etc, is one of the most difficult jobs for a defender. Size and shot blocking matters, but as importantly, great anticipation, positioning, footwork, and not committing yourself an instant too soon are just as important. Obekpa must improve rapidly in all of these areas before becoming a stopper against the break. We will see soon enough how much he has progressed, and hopefully, it's a considerable move from freshman year.
