Adios Jarvis

Hear hear! Jarvis was not someone steeped in St John's basketball. At the first President's Dinner after he was hired, Louie took Jarvis over to a table where several former players (including a friend, who told me this personally) were seated. Louie introduced him to these guys who were expecting at least a warm hello. Jarvis as much as dismissed them with a wave of his hand and moved on to another table. Makes you wonder if whoever interviewed this SOB had any interest in his feelings for the program's past. At least Lavin for all his other shortcomings had a respect for the past. I'm not a Harrington fan.

I do believe that anecdotal experiences don't necessarily define who the person is. I've never met Jarvis, so won't comment on your experience. I met Roberts a couple of times, and thought he was full of it, but I know someone who worked closely with him in the office and said he was a terrific person. Personally I haven't found Lavin to be engaging, but others have. I like Keady a lot - he is direct and appears to be honest. After Fraschilla, Jarvis initially appeared to be a gentleman, bright, no-nonsense, well spoken = what the school wanted to represent our program. If you remember, Coach Carnesecca had stayed away from games during the Mahoney and Fraschilla era. Jarvis publicly extended a warm hand to Lou and said that the final condition for him accepting the job was for Coach C. to attend games. All, I'm saying is that without a relationship with any of these guys, you really don't know how they are - except for Coach C. who has interacted with many of us multiple times over the years with grace, charm, and warmth.

Met him after his first game (a win over umass) at Dante's.
Sent him over bottle of champagne (he was no more than 15 feet away) and Alex Evans thanked me for the gesture.
Jarvis' wife looked at him as he ate and he never raised his head from his plate.
Wasn't looking for any acknowledgement, just wanted to send over congrats.
He's a rude dude.

Point taken Beast, but this is only one of several indicators. I just can't imagine the public Jarvis who always seemed aloof in the home of a kid trying to convince his mom into letting him play for St John's. Maybe it was just an aura he gave off,but I see him there, arms crossed over his chest and well, obviously he SHOULD have been seeing to his kids in Pittsburgh that night.

I do know that in the end, everyone in the AD could not stand him and his son. Upon hearing the news of their firing, someone in the AD got out their chair, gathered both name plates, and ceremoniously dumped them in the trash to a smattering of applause.

But, for the record, one of the reasons that Pittsburgh happened was that Jarvis and his son were already fired, and SJU didn't hire interim assistant coaches to travel with the team on the road to do bedchecks, etc. They were basically unsupervised college kids.

Tom, you may recall my experience with him in Knoxville in '99 (I wrote about it a number of years back). I bought him and staff champagne, food, cigars (good ones...note my handle) and BARELY got a thank you. Like you, I wasn't looking for one, I really wasn't. I was so thrilled SJU kicked the living crap out of Maryland in NCAA Tourney that I was beside myself. That said, I think he said something like, "not a bad cigar"...and that was my "thank you", I suppose.....and it was SO MUCH better than "not a bad cigar" that it still bugs me. I don't smoke White Owl's....

Classy is how you treat others, not how others treat you.

There was this show on ESPN called the season. One of the episodes was about SJBB when Jarvis was coaching. He was so obnoxious ,I said to myself why would anybody want to play for him. He must live near me in Boca. Went to the local CVS and he was there. I didn't bother to say hello.

. . . . if he hadn't been fired two months before, of course.

Remember that well Pat.
He really is a dick.
