QUEENS, N.Y. (July 11, 2018) – St. John’s announced Wednesday that the University has retained an executive search firm, Collegiate Sports Associates, to guide the national search process for its Director of Athletics vacancy. Led by Todd Turner, Founder & President, CSA has launched a confidential search that will identify and recruit a premier candidate with the professional profile required for this important leadership role.

“Collegiate Sports Associates is a well-respected executive search firm with an extensive portfolio of successful leadership placements,” said Joseph Oliva, Esq., Vice President for Administration, Secretary and General Counsel. “Todd Turner, who has nearly four decades of intercollegiate athletic experience, and his team at CSA are committed to seek a diverse pool of athletic administrators who share our Vincentian values and possess the attributes required to lead our athletic department. We are confident in the ability and experience of CSA to conduct a thorough, confidential search for the position of St. John’s Athletic Director.”

Collegiate Sports Associates has an extensive list of current and former clients from high major conferences. Prior to CSA, Turner spent 21 years serving as the Director of Athletics at the University of Connecticut, NC State University, Vanderbilt University, and the University of Washington. Turner personally manages and directs each search with the assistance of associates selected from an experienced group of industry professionals.

Would love to see a copy of the AD job description to see who the direct reports are. Chris should answer to the AD imo, otherwise the position remains unempowered. Any competent candidate would not find the previous reporting structure appealing. Time for Joe Oliva & Bobby G to step up. If not, don’t waste your $ on a search firm.

Agreed and, to your point, the best candidates will inquire about the structure and be very discerning before taking the leap.

Expect 'em to go on the cheap with a figurehead. No one worth their salt will want to deal with the powers that be and the poorly structured hierachy.

I need a job. How do I throw my hat in the ring? :)

Unfortunately, it appears that the trend across the country is that highly paid coaches ($1mm-10mm) don't take very much direction from ADs that are paid much less, are much more prominent, visible, and important to the university. ADs come and go with barely a ripple except in scandals or violations. I don't agree with it, but the days where high visibility coaches were managed by athletic directors are a thing of the past.

In discussions with Anton, he sounded more like Jay Horwitz in managing all the people who want at Chris than an AD.

I think the issue with ADs at these big schools is that the football and basketball coaches are bigger than them. They are paid much more and are way more popular to the average fan.

Think of coaches like Nick Saban or John Calipari, do you think they listen or have to respond to their AD? They can probably have their ADs fired in a second if they wanted.

Athletic Director sounds awful important but at schools that play big time basketball or football it has never been as important or as powerful as the head coach position.
As far as the impact the AD has on a major sport the hiring of an ass't. basketball coach at SJU will have more importance than the new AD.

It probably works best if the AD preceded the star coach by a decade or more and is firmly entrenched. And definitely when a coach like Saban or Cal would consider that AD a friend, but the AD is still smart enough to go into the relationship ego-less. That way, the coaches show them respect in public, which then keeps boosters from suddenly calling for the AD's head. I feel like only a handful of major ADs were stupid enough in recent years to challenge the true power structure, but I can't think of them off the top of my head.

I agree Beast. At a school like St. John's with an icon like Chris no matter who the AD Mullin's influence would prevail. Especially since Chris had NBA front office experience. I'm not losing sleep over this hire.

It's even worse than that. Granted Bobby Knight had baggage, but IU's president and board dared to confront him.

Here we have hero worship up to and including Bobby G. Admittedly I love the guy but also think the world of him personally. But I also think that wouldn't stop me from managing him if I were in a position to do so.

Someone's gotta say no. No to the luxury of tossing Mitch a bundle for God knows what. Yes to being more present at university events and to students - more of the fabric of the school - say, like you know who at the national champions (in his own way of course).

What I fear is not a powerless AD having no control over the coach, but no one in the university doing so.

Well said! I'm not a fan of the president or Oliva so what you say hits home. I've resigned myself to the "it is what is" philosophy with the program and hoping Chris turns it all around this season. Personally I think he will. Especially with a minor tweak in the staff.

FYI I don’t know if Montgoris is open this late during the summer time but I have to believe the D’angelo center is still open.

Good luck.
