Abdul-Malik Abu, PF (NC STATE VERBAL)

Prov. may be disappointed;

“@GoodmanESPN: My gut (and a little intel) says Abdul Malik Abu picks N.C. State over Florida. If thats the case, would be HUGE for Mark Gottfried & Co.”
How is Gottfried seemingly recruiting so well when his program at Alabama was going downhill and he was basically run out of town (though for more that just on court results-alleged affair with an underling or student)?

We got the wrong UCLA assistant.

Because he's at a hoops school now in a hoops conference, not a football school in a football conference. Bama's not going to get too many high ranking bb players. They don't want to carry Saban's guys bags. ;)

Bad news when a prime target of Lavins goes to one of the ACC's mid level teams. It's one thing to get our asses kicked ( recruiting wise that is ) by our local orange rival ( no not Monasch :) ) from upstate but to lose a recruit to NC State may not bode well for the future as the ACC may be deemed as the dominant hoops conference by the top recruits.

In case you haven't noticed - or comes to terms with it -- the ACC is, without question, the dominant hoops conference in the nation.

Unlike many of the posters on this site that don't see the corelation between our dumbed down conference and Lavin not getting the top recruits as he once did, I am all too well aware that the ACC is head and shoulders above the new Big East, I was however, hoping that recruits had not noticed as of yet.

Lavin just signed his highest rated recruit while being part of our 'dumbed down' conference. Maybe you should wait to say that lavin has stopped getting top recruits until ummm lavin stops getting top recruits.

One recruit in the last two recruiting classes does not a top flight program make.

You're being sarcastic, right?

I am not blaming Lavin at all for the recent recruiting slump that seems to be happening. But if you look at the top recruits we have lost as of late, Abu, McCullugh etc., I just think the lure of the ACC may be a tough nut to overcome.

He had several good years at Bama and brought them to their first elite 8 but than tailed off and the program was heading in the wrong direction and they got rid of him before St. Nick started winning National Championships. It is also not true that Bama doesn't get good players as they have produced numerous nba players and are second to Kentucky in SEC history. They just signed 3 four star players in one week, 2 in top 100 third guy just outside at 106 and are thought to be pretty strong favorite to get a fourth commitment from another 4 star and I believe top 100 player William Lee.

Recent slump? Are you insane? Lavin just signed a top 25, five-star point guard like three months ago! He had one scholarship and went out and signed a five-star player! They don't give six stars.

That may very well be your opinion but I was looking at it from an Alabama perspective. In case you haven't figured it out I am an Alabama fan hence the screen name Bamafan (though I admit much more in football where they are third to Dayton (where I attended law school )which is a distant second to St. John's (class of 76). Maybe his time at espn helped him. I was actually hoping for a more serious response, one that displayed some insight. But I do appreciate your sarcasm as I have been known to utilize this method of response. Touché! ;) :)

Lavin did get rasheed who was a top recruit but have said I have not seen top recruits showing interest in us And disappointed that we have been unable to get a single verbal for 2014 Just a question? Is the magic gone ? Perhaps if we have a great yr more recruits will start picking us Not negative on the team feel we are going to shock a lot of basketball pundits then we will not have to go after top recruits they will come calling

We really don't need to worry about whether the staff can assemble talent. Virtually our entire rotation is either a Top 100 or JUCO AA. We had the last two Big East ROY's and are probably the favorite to go 3 for 3 (in Lavin's first 3 full years recruting here no less). I know recruiting is one of the biggest what have you done for me lately games out there, but the last three Top 100s Lavin has landed were in the Spring. Against the likes of Kansas, UCLA, and Cincy. Selling a program that hasn't even started winning yet. At most Lavin has proven that he's going to consistently get good players; at the very least he's earned the right to have his recruiting evaluated at the end of the second signing period, not before the first one.

The more pressing question is whether the staff can blend all of the talent assembled and start winning a lot of games. That's the critical stage we're at this year. If we do that things could really start to open up for this program.

lavin is always right dont question him

No he isn't. No one is, not even coach k or the mighty Callipari. He has earned some trust so far though as he has made us relevant again. Many here seem to be upset because we are not elite yet and that is Lavin's fault. Ask yourself a question, other than the Mullin years when have we ever been elite? I think it has gone back to the 50's and 60's. I believe Lavin is trying to get us to that level again but it takes time. We will still lose recruits to cuse until Bonhiem is gone. We wont beat out Kentucky and Duke and UNC unless we bring a duffel bag of unmarked 20's. I would have loved to get Abu but do you think a few schools did not whisper in his ear that a devout Muslim would be lost and mistreated in a catholic school? Also it seems weird that he wanted to go somewhere with a strong Muslim community and there are only about 26k in the state with most not living in triangle area.

We are going after Elite players now, not 2nd tier. This is always going to be a dog fight and expect to get 1 in 10. We may settle for 2nd tier (still top 100) but it will wait after the rest is exhausted. This is what most people have been bitching about for the last 15 years and now we are bitching that we are recruiting with the big boys we don't get those early commitments, or are losing more than we are winning. This will not change till we get that one magical player or that one magical run to the final 4. Remember the disappointment of the Mahoney years, the embarrassment of the underwear of the fran years, the arrogance of the Jarvis years, and the total disappointment of the Norm years. With Lavin we have Hope, let us all pray that it turns in to success and exaltation.

WE ARE

Agree with the gist of your post, but for the life of me, I can't remember the "Mallony years."
