A Shot at Mullin

Premature, unfair, but thought I would share. Keidel is with CBS/WFAN it appears.

Way too premature and grossly unfair
John Wooden would not have won with this roster
Now, if we still stink 4 years from now, I'll sing a different tune
But I tend to believe that this yutz will be eating his words in the near future
This ship is heading in the right direction!!

No arguments to support the assertion that Mullin should not continue. I think that his demeanor will not allow him to sit back and let the team's poor play continue. Must take a longer view. Recruiting was the start. Staff will review this season and adjust.

Everyone knew this season would be rough. We returned what, 4% of scoring? Preseason everyone was on board with taking losses and waiting until we get multiple talented pieces in place next season.

But the pain and agony of losses inevitably has made people second guess mullin and the staff. Nothing you can do but disagree and continue to be patient

Can we give Chris, Slice and Matt a chance to recruit and rebulid a roster relatively (and perhaps absolutely) devoid of talent and experience.

This is going to be a multi-year workout (.i.e. 3-4 years , at best)

The problem for some is that instant gratification takes too long !

... interesting that Mr. Keidel did not reference the lack of talent Mullin inherited when he took the job.

IMO Mully gets a grade of B+ for this season based upon recruiting classes of 2016 and positioning for 2017, getting the payers to play hard, and player improve (see Jones, Tawke, and others).

As a final grade for coaching/ program management Mullin deserves an "Incomplete" which will only be answered after season 3.

Just as I would not hold anything against Mullin for this year I don't know how you can give him a B+ based on kids that have not played 1 minute of college basketball.
Gets Incomplete. Starts earning a grade next year

There is no evidence off a shred of inside information that would lend credence to the notion that SJU brass is "conflicted" as Kreidel states, and that subsequently there is a storm brewing in Queens.

I've been critical of what I've seen on the sideline, but Kreidel's article focuses on outcomes, which is plain silly.

Kreidel's point of reference in naming professional players who have failed at being coaches is insanely stupid. John Wooden was a great player, who became a greater coach. The major leagues in baseball are filled with managers who are former big league players. The crappy Mets alone had Hodges, Davey Johnson, Bobby Valentine, and Terry Collins as former major leaguers who go them to the World Series. (Was Berra the manager in 73? Crazy stuff.

If Kreidel wants to be ahead of the curve to say Mullin will fail, well guess what? Most new coaches fail. If he wants to assert that no other major program would have hired Mullin as HC, that's true. Does he honestly believe that SJU doesn't know the risk of naming a HC who never coached a game? Does he think for a moment that risk-reward is at play here?

For all of Kreidel's crap, Mullin immediately assembled a very good coaching staff including two of the best recruiters around, including one who left Kentucky of all places to come here. His staff has recruited really well. Of course, for all of his lack of experience on the sidelines, Mullin has deferred to guys THIS SEASON who are better at Xs and Os. If this is happening in 3 years, then you have something to complain about.

If this guy thinks SJU made a mistake because we've won a single Big East game, he's crazy. Nobody could turn this team into winners, NO ONE.

Mr. Keidel-

Back in October of each year, the Big East coaches are polled and vote as to how the teams will perform in the Big East Conference for the upcoming season. This past October, before the first tip-off of any exhibition game, the coaches voted that St. John's would finish last in the Big East. Last.
http://www.bigeast.com/news/2015/10/13/MBB_1013152011.aspx

CBS Sports analysts in October also voiced their views on where the Big East teams would finish the up coming season. Analysts including Parrish, Gottlieb and Rothstein, voted in this poll that St John's would finish last in the conference. Last.

Both of those polls were taken before Marcus Lovett was ruled a partial qualifier and thereby ruled ineligible to play this season. Also, back in October, Darien Williams, a 6-8 junior college transfer was expected to play for St John's this season, but hasn't suited up for any games due to injury. And freshman center Yankuba Sima missed many weeks with a hand injury. Without these players participating, it virtually would be impossible for this team to have over achieved and won. The team wasn't supposed to win much and didn't with regard to their won/loss record. I however feel this team played with more spirit and pride than I could have hoped for with no off court incidents, no suspensions, no one missing practices or meetings without permission, teammates never pointing fingers at fellow teammates, everyone pulling for each other and for that reason alone I believe this season was a success at building character. Character that was taught by Chris Mullin and his staff.

I won't give this putz the benefit of a click-through and a read.

Anyone who follows the program closely understands what the staff was starting with and what they're up against.

I remain confident that every day brings us closer to the last laugh. Looking forward to when that time arrives -- even if it is two or three years down the road.

Most of us have been avid St. John's fans for a long time, and the lucky ones remember the mid 80's. Even before this season started, it appeared that the columnist felt that Mullin wasn't the right choice, so now he has his stats in the way of an awful season to a casual observer or the uninformed to claim he was right. For those who are aware of the wreckage left behind, know that we had several months to assemble something that barely looked like a D1 basketball team.

As of now, Mullin has a long leash due to him being the greatest player in St. John’s history, so I know he gives two craps about this guy’s opinion. However, if we had any other coach not named Mullin during this tenure, some of us would probably be pushing the coach out the door. It pays to be a school legend.

Is Mullin a great coach at this time, no. Will he get better, most likely. Does he have a great staff with great recruiters, absolutely. Do great recruits with defined roles playing team ball win more games than they lose, most definitely. Does the future still look bright, hell yeah.

The old saying goes, that even a broken clock is right two times a day and at this time Kiedel (the columnist) is a tool masquerading as a clock.

Clearly just an article to get views and stir up some controversy. This guy knows nothing about the program and didn't do any research. Sounds like the big boys upstairs gave him an angle and made him stick to it. Would expect this kind of thing from ESPN.

I think for next year if Mullin looks um... more involved, we are for the most part competitive and he can determine what his rotation will be and who his best players will be I will be satisfied. If all that plays out it will really be up to the players. Would like to see 15 -17 wins overall and maybe improve to 5-6 BE wins but not married to any specific number.

So easy for anyone to take a shot at someone.
As stated way premature - obvious - current staff inherited one of the worse untalented messes in perhaps all of college BBall
AND
not even a year under the new regime, recruiting opportunities and the like...
No need to justify Chris Mullin - though I guess I'm doing just that.
Yes John Wioden, Mike K declared great all time coaches could do no better with this team this year. Coach K West Point by Class of 1969 was almost fired in his early years, his firing was considered by Duke.
I wonder who was proposed as a better alternatively CM?
I'll answer that: no one
Chris is the right man at the right time for the right job.
They'll be more unfounded cheap shots no doubt...they prove nothing that we do not already know:
the present stinks, the future is bright, let's move on.

Realistic. Thanks WASJU!

Spot on. I think many posters are overestimating us for next year. As long as we improve each year. I think we could be good year 3.
