a lot of endlessly repetitive chatter

OK I'll play along-July 31st 2018-No news on Heron's eligibility status. Please check here tomorrow for further updates. Happy? :silly:
We hit the lottery, getting Heron out-of-thin air like we did and I think he’ll be eligible in 2018-19–but very likely nada new on that decision until maybe October.
Meanwhile, Mike Rice is a key piece we need to complete the Staff, provide coaching depth and critical recruiting connections across many area High School and AAU programs.
In its own sphere, hiring Rice or someone like him is as critical to our future success as getting Heron and having him eligible in 2018-19.

I hope nothing comes up in the background check ;)

All kidding aside even if he didn’t bring any Rio kids this would take a ton of pressure off of Matt and help us on the recruiting trail.
Having taught high school for 44 years many of those years as a dean in the NYC Public school system I have dealt with many high school students who have gone off the hook and had to be straightened out . I myself while teaching in a middle school in Bushwick went off the hook because of student actions . I think all of us have had days when we did things that we later were ashamed of .. A person should not be ostracised for one action because we all learn from our mistakes .
Respectfully Matt, I can agree 100% about not having one action destroy you, but Rice's firing did not occur from a single event but from a pattern of abuses occurring over 2 seasons. I don't even know if any occurred in his prior tenure.

If you taught, then you know how long you would have lasted if you were firing basketballs at student's heads when you list your temper, even if you were a CYO coach. Yea, Rice may have learned his lesson, not because he did it, but did it again and again till he finally got fired.

I do believe in rehabilitation for those capable of learning from one's actions. There's no reason to believe that's not the case with Rice - he's paid a heavy price for derailing his own career. There was an era where coaches could get away with this stuff and that style was considered old school.

I recall that the Garden City high school highly successful lacrosse coach was fired after some crazy behaviors in a war with neighbors. A bunch of formers students recalled how he verbally abused geek non-athletic students in gym class because he didnt like the way they looked, acted or played. Not saying this is an example of Rice, but I will say that Rice didn't have an epiphany, he got fired after a couple of years of such abuses.

Honestly, that doesn't bother me much or at all really. What bothers me is that we are much more likely to forgive saviours if they can deliver wins, while we never forgive those who couldn't win here. Heck, if Jarvis delivered seasons of 25 wins consistently there isn't a single offense we would not be forgiving on here.

What most bothers me is the thought that the biggest impediment to winning is not having a Mike Rice here already. From my view, after just 3 seasons Mullin and crew have built a formidable roster. You guys are quick to belittle Greg St. Jean but you guys could not point out a single gaffe or consistent teaching error that resulted in losses. All we saw last year was an undermanned roster that battled almost everyone tough for every minute of almost every game before losing more than we liked.

If we win this year, with or without Rice, it will be because of a deeper, more talented roster and not because we made a coaching hire.

August perhaps a fun month;

Thanks Paultz. If we do get him we're getting a very hungry guy no doubt. As someone else said, he would take a lot of pressure off Matt which is huge in itself. Having 2 solid recruiters like Matt and Rice would be awesome. Matt specializes more in transfers and Rice specializes in HS kids especially in NJ area. If we have Rice and Heron with us heading into this season and somehow avoid the injury bug, we can be nationally relevant once again.

Lol good memory Beast, he stole a neighbor’s license plate and was caught. A legendary coach though which is something you cannot say about Mike Rice. Also I don’t recall him being abusive towards students in gym. Wouldn’t adamantly dispute the claims you’ve heard but in my years of being around him he was one of those old school guys who maybe had a comment here or there for some of the wimpy kids. This was 12-15 years ago when I was in HS. That may not seem like awhile ago but I’m sure times have changed drastically with how coaches and teachers communicate with kids. A guy like this would definitely have needed some sensitivity training to keep his job these days.

Things have certainly changed a great deal in recent years What we call "abusive" behavior on the part of coaches today was considered "discipline" a generation ago. I coached high school sports from the early '70's through the mid 80's. A lot of coaching behaviors that I witnessed during that era would not be tolerated today.

As far as Rice is concerned, his actions were clearly out of bounds by anyone's definition. But, to his credit, he has taken responsibility for his actions, has taken measures to change his behavior and has seemingly had successful experiences as a high school and AAU coach. He has "paid his dues" and deserves a chance to climb the ladder once again. As many of us have stated, our country has historically been gracious in giving second chances. Rice has taken the steps necessary to earn that opportunity. I hope that he gets it at St John's.

Doc Dougherty was mean to students. New Culture in High School sports you can't be critical. Garden City also fired their long time baseball coach because he was too mean.

People who have struggled with anger issues and have successfully gone through anger management counseling can be a real asset. Mike Rice will bring a unique perspective and ability to relate to and help players who have the same issues. I'm sure is that he is a better man for what he went through, and will be a real boost to the staff and the players.

This is such a good point. We always talk about sports being a great classroom – where we learn from adversity and develop life skills. I know many people who turned their lowest points into a stepping stone to bigger, better things. I expect that Rice will return a smarter and more thoughtful coach because of what he's gone through.

If I’m not mistaken, Mike Rice had a big impact on D’Lo when they were both at the John Lucas camp together

Lucas and Rice came to CA for D'lo's return game at the start of the next season. They were two regular guys having pizza in the parlor on the corner of Utopia and Union before the game. I thought that was pretty cool that they quietely joined the other 2,000 fans to support him and the team in an early November game in Queens.

Please let 'us' do this.
It would unify a very talented roster with a fortified coaching staff and a full-throttle recruiting effort.
Then, let the games begin.
