30 for 30: Requiem For The Big East-Rivalry

It's funny, the only people I saw who smeared this year's Big East Tournament are people with connections to the defectors. Our tournament was exciting, the crowds were good and the venue was great as always. The entire Big East season was competitive and the true double round robin was terrific. It was fun getting to know all the teams in the conference by playing them all once at home. I feel like the Catholic 7 schools have moved on and accept the new conference for what it is. Honestly, the new tournament was more exciting for me because the schools involved all have respectful fanbases and similar mindsets. Also didn't hurt that we had a realistic chance to win even with a mediocre team, which never would have happened with the old configuration. Cuse was a big fish in the biggest pond. Now they're just another school in that conference. Losing to mediocre schools in front of flat crowds will become the norm for them in that tournament, especially after Boeheim leaves. The level of play in our tournament may not be as good as the ACC down the road but our tournament will still be a premier one, even with ESPN's attempt to put us down for good.

Is Edelman Orange?
ESPN's on the air people seem to be mostly Syracuse grads
Like the only nick name used The Orange now that it is ACC time

Look at this tweet! I guess he didn't get the memo from the ESPN brass:

"The @BIGEAST is far from dead." - @DickieV

Say what you will about him, I don't think I've ever hear Dickie V say a negative word about anything or anybody.

Must see TV, nice segment on our rivalry with Georgetown and why Kevin Williams is revered by Redmen fans alike.

Does it have the segment of Williams taunting Ewing big s**t-eating-grin, just daring him to try to take a piece out of him?

I have to admit, I hated Syracuse and UCONN, but I LOVED to hate them. Same was true 25 years ago about BC, now, they are just another good Catholic School.

Yes indeed, video footage of the 1983 game where Williams showed no fear for "Hoya Paranoia."

I used to love to hear the Len Berman/Bill Raftery team on Big East games. Same, as I liked Mike Gorman/Raftery team. Brings back memories.

great piece last night, but i feel so much was still left out. so many thories about the collapse still out there. One thing that most can agree is that- # 1- we should of never taken in Miami, WV, Va Tech, and Rutgers. All they did was create an allience against the originators. #2- If Cuse stays, we are still a top 3 conference no matter how you slice it. # 3- If Notre Dame committed to BE football and was "Pro- Big East" we could of survived. Bottom line is, im glad we are back to the basics, I do wish we still had hated rivals UConn and Cuse. If we had both of them now, I still would consider us the top conference. Its sad, but im glad where we are, now we need to root for all Big East teams playing to build credibility with those spinless losers who live and breathe ACC like Bilas. Good Luck to Providence, Nova, Xavier, and Creighton.....and the Johnnies as NIT Champs.

I thought the first 90 minutes or so was fantastic. The footage and the interviews with the old guard really brought back a lot of memories. The last 20 minutes or so where they focus on how the Big East without Syracuse is not the Big East was completely self-serving to ESPN. I hope in a year or two Fox can do a special on the revival of the Big East. We are in a much better place than a few years ago when we were flying to Texas to play basketball games. The future of the Big East is bright, hopefully the next few additions are as positive as Creighton Butler and Xavier have been.

There was some good stuff afterwards, on an ESPNU program called "Big East Extras." It kind of offered some stories that weren't told during the special.

There was one Raftery told about an early-day big east St. John's-Hall game, in which apparently, we were up by around 35 early in the second half. Raftery has his team manager send Louie a note saying he surrenderd, and offered Louie an opportunity to "practice" against a 2-3 zone, to which Carnsecca as yes, and Raftery switched to zone defense.

It's almost like hes a Mormon. He loves everybody.

I saw that one, as well. Raf said (paraphrased), "A coach would be fired today for doing that."

It came on ESPNU after the 30 for 30 segment was completed.

He's the ultimate college basketball cheerleader. Although his schtick is a bit over the top, I appreciate his love for the game. Every time I watch people raving about NBA basketball, it makes me want to puke. We here, like Dickie V, all love the college game.

i watched the whole show and the extra piece afterwards. It was very good. It was clear that the Coaches, Boeheim,Pitino, Calhoun to a extent really did not want their schools to defect from the league. Once again the College Presidents of a few schools, many who are clueless about BB and, more so ethical practices, make decisions based solely on football generated revenue. Admittedly, the $$$ are not hard to understand.

To me, the loss of Syracuse as a founding member was the final nail in the coffin for the league as we knew it.. UCONN TOO, regardless of our opinions on the Huskies , was a loss too.

And, one of the biggest backstabbers, was Notre Dame! The BE gave a lot of credibility to their BB at the time they joined and, so much for their loyalty to their Catholic Brethren .

I thought the clips of G'town playing any opponent back in the Ewing era, showed them to have that thug mentality at its worst.. JT1 comes across as a bitter person who had the belief, however mistaken, that everyone was against him and his team because they were all black. He misses the point though. Everyone despised the HOYAS because they were PUNKS period, not because they were Black. Pearl Washington was great and I saw the game in MSG when he stood up to Ewing man to man. So, did our guy, KEVIN wILLIAMS.

Michael Graham was a disgrace for the Hoyas and I know students and alums had to be embarrassed and rightly so, for their team's behavior during this era.

Ed Pinckney and Mullin, of course, came across very well. And, so did Walter Berry, albeit in a short interview.

It was nostalgic to see these HOF Coaches in their heyday..

" Leave the Chandeliers," was classic Louie at his best..GOD BLESS HIM!

Huh? Did you miss the part where fans were throwing bananas at Ewing? Or wearing t-shirts and chanting Ewing can't read? If you are a coach, and one of your kids is subjected to this...how are you supposed to take it?
It would be like throwing bagels at the Yeshiva University basketball team, then claiming it wasn't because they are Jewish, but rather because the world doesn't like how they play.
I couldn't disagree with you more.
