30 for 30: Requiem For The Big East-Rivalry

Wow never new that Thompson and Boeheim despised each other. But than again, who didn't despise Thompson?

Interesting. The director Ezra Edelman, says that he wanted to document not only the rise of the Big East, but "also understand and ultimately convey the causes of its fall." Fall of the Big East? Another shot at the Big East from ESPN.

My personal belief is, ESPN has never been fond of the Redmen, and I think that dislike has shown through the years? Am I just imagining it, or do others agree?

I don't believe that at all. That feeling could be ESPN's disinterest since Looie has gone, but that is St. John's fault not theirs.
For a very long time the highest rated event on ESPN was a St. John's basketball game with Mullin, back in the early days of ESPN.

They can start with bringing notre dame into the fold and not insisting they let Miami and the other football teams play with them

I don't think you are reaching. But I don't think it's dislike, I think it's more about cross promotion for the football schools. I may be wrong but I remember when I was younger there was Big Tuesday I think it was called. Big East games on ESPN had the Redmen on frequently. (99' early 2000's)

The biggest loser from this year with ESPN is Doug McDermott. If they had the big east he would be getting Johnny Football coverage.

Based on dealings with ESPN (albeit 10 years ago), I know first-hand that ESPN wants to crush the competition by any means necessary. In this case, the competition is Fox Sports 1. And what better way to do so than to pronounce FS1's premier conference, the Big East, dead ... and to repeat that message over and over again. The promos this past week or so for "Requiem for the Big East" have been relentless. And now the conversation has begun that the Atlantic 10 is better than the BE (sheer nonsense!) -- something you might be hearing more of on ESPN in days to come. That said, let's hope the four teams we have in this year's Big Dance go deep into the tournament and that ESPN will be forced to give BE the props it deserves.

It's great when even Syracuse fans admit that the ACC tournament will never have the same energy as the Big East, check out some of the comments lol.

Great quote from one of their fans:

"No, you're wrong. If we held the BE together, we'd still be in the BE."

There's much to lament for Cuse fans. you can take the ACC tourney and plop it in Brooklyn, but there was something amazing about the BET, which was founded on the notion of regional teams mostly competing within a 6 hour driving range of each other. Yea, Cuse fans took over the Garden and acted as if it were their building - so did UCONN. But so many of their alumni and fans were raised in or move to the NYC Metro area that the BET was chance to see their team play 3 games in three nites. Remove the regional rivalry aspect of it, and while their can be great games (see Syracuse -Duke) it's just not the same. Maybe it's the difference between a dirty water dog on the streets of Manhattan compared to a Nathan's hotdog, but there was something awesome about the old Big East, something gritty, that somehow made it taste better. Winning here in MSG meant something, raised the ire of competing schools - real passion. Cuse in the ACC loses it's identity. In NYC, Cuse winning or lose there soon won't matter a shred - just ask the average fan how good BC ahs been over the past 15 years and they really couldn't tell you.

I agree, Beast. (You're doing some of your best work this morning :) )
I also agree with that fan. If Cuse had stayed, the Big East would not have broken up. Uconn and Cinci had no better place to go, and Louisville would likely have stayed. ND didn't need to leave for football. We would have lost Rutgers (who cares?) and, maybe, Pitt (again, who cares?).

I disagree. If Cuse didnt go, UConn would have in a split second. The whole thing from the BE schools was based upon football and football money. But from the ACC perspective it was a perfect scenario to break up the BE which had surp;assed it in so many ways in basketball and on Tobacco Road, basketball is King

Where was Uconn going? The ACC rejected them. They are in the AAC, aka Big East leftovers, because no other conference wanted them.

Great to hear that they feel that way...hopefully last night's atmosphere can be matched and exceeded next year and the BE can rise again and serve crow to some of the naysayers...as much I couldn't stand Syracuse, they would have been anchor tenant that might have kept some of the other deserters...don't care about Pitt, they weren't a big stage winner but Syracuse, UCONN and Louisville were big losses...
