Ayo was an okay-to-good defender, not an excellent one like Aaron Scott (or Justin Simon, for example.)
He switched well, but like Weatherman said, he did get blown by, at times, due to playing super aggressive coverage and not being able to still stay with his man. Being able to do that makes for an excellent defender and it is not easy to do.
Nice complementary player, 12-17 minutes per. He had some decent games for us.

Okay defender is completely nuts. He switched on everyone...Kam Jones tried to take him off the dribble 5-6x in our two games and Ayo shut him down every single time-- and he did that as our 4. He's a soph with very little game time.
I don't understand why everything has to be a binary. Just because he wasn't as good as two of our best defenders this century as a soph he's just "okay." That's nuts. He has DPOY potential. I don' think he'll ever get the minutes to earn that award, but that's his ceiling.
His value in this NIL free-transfer era is off the charts. Nobody wants to play second fiddle anymore. Not only does he do that, but he cheers everyone on and he comes in and busts his ass. He covers 1-5 without hesitation.
what's the value of an exhibition game against Michigan at the Garden? Our back to backs against Rutgers did not sell out at either arena; I can see a disappointing turnout in MSG for this.
Get a top ten ranking pre season and see how the excitement sells
Michigan could be top 10 also and might be a game for a charity.
I like the charity angle.

Michigan has a solid alumni base in NYC. They can fill some seats if this is marketed properly. Charity seems like a no brainer.
Revised from okay-to-good, to good-to-excellent, make you happy Marillac? Excellent to me is highest-level, and he's not in that category IMO (maybe will be who knows). I'm a tougher grader than you perhaps.
Much of what you say about his value I agree with, but DPOY, I'm thinking to win that award his minutes will have to be much higher than most people expect.
His bench presence is BenchPOY-quality, I agree, and love him, he's an outstanding team mate and I want him to stay for the duration.
I'm fine with good to very good. It's the okay part that I took issue with. The thing that makes my head spin with him is how good he is in those small minutes. The way you get better is having as much tape as possible and learning from your mistakes. That's easy to do when you play 20 minutes a game...very hard when you play 5 minutes.
He comes in cold and he immediately not only plays 100% but he's directing guys on both sides of the ball. His basketball IQ already extremely high. He's going to be a coach.
Fantasizing (I know I shouldn’t) about a world where we land Sellers, Lee, Jackson, Mitchell we would have the deepest team in college basketball. Just look at this rotation:
Guards: Lee, Jackson, Sellers, Wilcher, Sanon
Wings/Post: Zuby, Hopkins, Prey, Vince, Mitchell
Additional depth: Glover, Lefty, Ayo, Maker.
Could see one or two more defections if all that comes to fruition, but we’ll see.

I'd surmise the goners would come from the "additional depth" column.

Agreed. I don't think Ayo is going anywhere but could definitely see one of Glover/Lefty bouncing and possibly Maker.
I’d love that. The starting five would be small at the 3-5. Prey and Mitchell will help with that. I’d imagine a lot of 3 guard lineups. Certainly the most athletic and deep SJU I can recall. Filled with shooters. Much different than last year’s team, but also more talented.
