2025 Portal

Neither has Ace Bailey. I went to the scrimmage at Rutgers, and Ace was fantastic. He now wanders the court, and doesn’t seem to have a clear understanding of his role. Harper, at least, does, as a Poor Person’s Jalen Brunson.

I haven’t seen much of Bailey but he like Harper will wind up being drafted in the Top 5 of the NBA Draft this year.

Two talents like that and Rutgers can’t figure it out!

Is anyone else scouting the other teams' players during our games for potential transfers?

Recency bias- I like Swain… think there is a lot of potential there…

Don’t think we can go after Coleman of Hall… Rick might have bomb threats from Hall fans lol…

Whoever we get- guarantee they are combing rosters for an Aaron Scott clone…

And a shooter!!!! Lol

Not really because I think our roster retention will be x100 more important. This year also showed just how much different the transfer portal is to NBA free agency. Fit, coaching, and culture is so much more important in college basketball because the skill gap between the very best and the best isn't as pronounced compared to the pros.

Outside our starting five, which is all no brainers, I want to prioritize keeping Dunlap, Glover, Prey, Lefty, Maker. They know what Rick wants, they've shown development already, and with Rick's track record, assuming he wants them back, we can also expect a jump.

Fit is priority #1

While X is playing better now- and is a good team- I was extremely envious of their Portal Haul… feel like they scooped up 3-5 bucket getters averaging 15+ at their previous stops… I now see that doesn’t equate to “fit”

Retention should be a priority, but we will have losses and holes that need to be filled.

Unless the NCAA changes its rules, KR and Scott aren't eligible to return. This is Smith's 5th season, so he should be done, but I have heard he may seek another year. So that's 2-3 open spots. Possibly RJ to the NBA, but I doubt it at this point. Plus, there will be attrition due to players looking for greener pastures.

Since we are not recruiting high school players, the Johnnies will be in the transfer market again.

Coleman is a player I really like.

We definitely will. Someone here said STJ is confident they'll have a #1 portal class next year too. I have no idea what that means specifically to us, or how we're going to work with our NIL budget. My point more is, I do think its more important than ever to take a wait and see/year by year approach.

If our insiders want to drop some names of guys we're targeting, I will 100% "scout" them. lol

Like to get Fland and Poplar.

(Don’t think we’re seriously considering either of them, but just want to be able to play a Boogie Woogie backcourt…)
I have seen Fland as a 1st rounder in many NBA mock drafts. Not sure how the injury will affect that.

I will say at this point last yr i had 7 or 8 kids I was already putting feelers out for. This year, bc of the late huge deals some kids got more are going to wait longer into the process. Schools have deeper and deeper pockets and the talent pool will also continue to grow. In respect to SJU the talk is they will have a deeper resource pool then last year( don't know how that compares to other schools relatively speaking) but I can say i have 2 elite kids that finances aside would not have been interested in SJ but between the success on court, crowds(yes kids absolutly notice) and of course coach they will very much be on the radar this off season

Makes sense. Unless kids are going to get a guaranteed 1st round contract, they can make more $ by staying in college. I imagine players' agents are already reaching out through back channels. Last year showed that the Johnnies have enough NIL $ to be very competitive in the transfer market. This year RP will have even more to offer, not just $ and his rep.

If Boogie does transfer, is he willing to takes a pay cut?
Depends on who our competition is and what the difference is in offers, but we can offer some unique things other coaches can't: playing at home in front of friends and family at MSG, and playing for a HOF coach who specializes in player development who can get your draft stock up as the primary ball handler of a top 25 team.

Maybe he is just going to go to the highest bidder, but that would be an unfortunate decision calculas for himself.

i hope deeper pockets mean we can pay our current players. Zuby and Sim will command hefty raises. And if RJ and Deivon come back, that will cost big time.
