2016-2017 Season Thread

Would a 5th yr big man transfer really be more productive than what Jones would be next year. Had he spent the past 4 yrs at some mid-major program, he would very possibly be the 5th yr transfer guy many here would be clamoring to come.

I wouldn't be so quick to assume we are pushing Jones out the door. Christian very well may have made the decision that going mid major is the best thing for his career.

Sometimes the best decisions are mutually agreed to.

Would make a great replacement at StonyBrook.

He could step right into Warney's spot and eat up the America East next year
If he watched Stony Brook play in the title game, he must be salivating at that thought
I would hate to see CJ leave, but this would be a much better option for his future

Warney brings it every game, though. CJ still needs to learn to bring the fire.

He sure looked like he learned to bring the fire in Wednesday's game against Marquette.

(Edit: Had mistakenly written Friday's game.)

I don't expect him to be as good as Warney but he could be very good at that level. Warney was a three star recruit out of Roselle Catholic that was supposed to be good.

I see a lot of posters predicting that Ponds is going to start from Day 1 next season, but I don't see it that way. I think Mullin will start LoVett and Mussini in the backcourt, with Ahmed, Yakwe and Sima up front.

Doubt it, Mussini couldn't even start over Ellison down the stretch of the season.

I didn't see it that way. Mussini coming off the bench felt like a move to mitigate the burn out factor that was clearly setting in. I liked the fact that Ellison raised his game as the season went on, but to me, FM showed the most maturity in the backcourt.

IMO--neither Mussini nor Ellison are starter-caliber Big East players. If Ponds and Lovett are eligible and healthy, they should get the nod. Yeah, they'll make lots of mistakes, but the faster they get comfortable in the role, the better.

Besides turning the ball over too much Ellison had a freshman year similar to Carrington. Give him a chance.

Yes but other than you and a few others with amazing "inside access" :) or " incredible intuition" :)
Most of us are left to wait, see or speculate.
No matter what else occurs, however, having Lovett, Ponds, Freudenberg, Owens and Bashir makes for such a better, more capable, more enjoyable team.

I'm ready for it - no matter the Ws and Ls - and you just have to believe we'll have double digit wins...2016-17 = progress even if more modest than we'd like. Maybe even a surprising show.
thanks

I like his size and his allegedly very strong work ethic. So I hope it works out. But man, he is hard to watch. No IQ on the offensive side and zero contributor on defense.

Only we have seen what he can do for three years. His athleticism is extremely intriguing . He has quick and nimble feet and quick post moves going right or left and can use both hands. He looks good right until the shot leaves his hands. Just so frustrating. Was the last two games turning the corner, or just a light bulb shinning brightly before it burns out (or in this case before reverting back to form).

I think what he showed the last two games is what he showed Lavin early on when he was raving about him. If we had seen more of that, it would have made for a better season. I appreciate his effort and representation and wish him well in whatever he decides.

Maybe Jones is making lateral move here

wasju, any word on him headed to baylor?

I can see him going back home to Texas but not sure Baylor would have that much interest. Then again I have no idea who they have coming back or in.

If he goes back home SFA is a no-brainer to me. Chances of making it to the dance would be pretty high. Can't coast there, though, especially on D.

One game does not fire make.

And if he did finally put it all together, he deserves to be ripped by the fan base for only putting it all together when he needed an audition tape for transfer purposes.

Remember we scored 93 points in that game. Marquette's defense was almost as bad as ours.

It was a long tough year but I think we righted the long term ship. We need to cut our turnovers in half. We have to value each possession. If we can clean this up it will go a long way. I think a real point guard will help. I think we will be a jump shooting team with little inside presence unless we close on a talented big man. This will limit how many wins we eventually get. A talented big man via transfer or freshman will make the difference between a decent team and a good team. Don't know how likely that is.

18 wins next season with a few quality W's late in the season. Predicting an NIT championship which springboards the program in the coming years to postseason success in the big boy's tournament.

Jones was our best interior scorer so that may hurt us but we are primed to have the biggest front court we have had in a long time. Obviously more length than bulk but our size will give us a chance against most teams next year. Also the introduction of a real pg or two will lead to much more easy baskets, both in half court and transition.

We have five guys at 6'9 or taller on the roster for next year and that doesnt include Yakwe who plays like he is 6'9 and Ahmed who's 6'7 and has had great rebounding numbers in JUCO.
