2015-16 Official Schedule Thread

Nice to know we are playing a team that has also scheduled such powerhouses as Schreiner, Dallas Christian College and Our Lady of the Lake

@JonRothstein: St. John's will host Wagner on Friday 11/13/15 at Carnesecca Arena, source told @CBSSports. First game of the Chris Mullin era. #sjubb

I would love to see the team do some sort of exhibition run in Europe during late summer. That would be a great experience and help these guys learn to play with each other earlier. I do not know why we don't do this more often. Other schools seem to do this every other year or so.

That's only allowed once every 4 years. We did it in 2013.

3. St. John's fans should temper their expectations

The buzz surrounding the Red Storm program has been beyond palpable since Chris Mullin was hired as head coach and that's for good reason. The St. John's staff has done an unbelievable job filling out its roster during the Spring recruiting period and Mullin's presence at his alma mater has given Red Storm fans the type of nostalgic feel that they've craved for years. But that doesn't mean this team should be expected to be finish in top half of the Big East this season or next.

"St. John's is going to get players under Mullin, but people need to remember Steve Lavin also got players when he first arrived in Jamaica and it took him until his fifth year to reach the NCAA Tournament with a group that was ranked as a top-five recruiting class when they were incoming freshman. It takes time to build a program in college basketball and while Red Storm fans don't want to be patient, they're going to have to be. The roster that Mullin inherited was beyond depleted (lost five of top six scorers) when he took over in March and it's going to take two to three quality recruiting classes to get this program to the point where it can expect to be a perennial contender in the Big East."

Taking 2 to 3 recruiting classes to be a perennial contender is not bad news. It means the future is bright,

Hardly the truth. Rothsteins love affair with Lavin hurts this articles credibility. Rothstein states Lavin taking five years to make a tournament with his players to cite an example of how long a rebuilding process can take. But Lavin was a bad coach. A better staff and better recruiting, both of which I expect from this current staff, can speed up the process

Just as cancer, or the death of a parent, or an injury to a critical player can slow it down. I disliked Lavin's coaching style going back to UCLA, deeply admired the way he functioned en loco parentis, and have not a clue about how the new guys will do.

The truth about Lavin leaving a beyond-depleted roster? We already knew that, so I personally am not particularly hurt by it.

As of right now the series with SYracuse has not been extended.

They started one with Georgetown who they are playing away next year. I would assume either Villanova or SJU will be removed. I am also not sure if they would want to play two big east games on road next year so maybe they will take a break from us unless we go back up there.

Syracuse will soon be irrelevant. Why give them anymore exposure at the garden than they already get

I agree. little upside for St Johns in the big picture and I'll leave it at that.

I can't see how we could possibly be a "perennial contender" in 2 to 3 recruiting classes. It may take 2/3 just to get back to the tourney. Even if we do that, we'd have to keep doing it consistently year after year before that statement could be true.

We were in the tourney last year but are not close to being a "perennial contender." In 5-10 years I hope we are a program that expects to be in every year and expects to do well based on multiple years of previous success. That's a perennial contender.

We can easily be a perennial contender if we have good recruiting classes each of the following two seasons. At that time we would be a very experienced team going forward. The key is consistently good recruiting, something we did not have under Lavin. Huge roster mismanagement and wasted ships. For every good player Lavin brought in there was at least one wasted scholarship or a misused scholarship.
Right now we see the current staff holding back on offering talented kids because they value ships. They realise they are precious and are to be given out to players that merit them and not to warm bodies , to players that can help the program and not to mask their recruiting deficiencies. Two more good classes for 2016 and 2017 and we will be in very good shape going forward.

Agree that we would be in good shape but I guess I don't agree that means "perennial contender." I think that only comes after years of sustained success. 2/3 good recruiting classes could set us up for that but we'd need to keep it up year after year and have more luck keeping our top recruits in school than what we've had recently.

Really depends on what you are perennially contending for. Can be a perennial contender for the BE title with a couple of great classes in 16 and 17 and then consistency. Unlikely to be a perennial contender for the NCAA title no matter what happens. Perennial contender for Sweet 16/Elite 8 requires getting there a couple of times first and that's going to take 4-5 years minimum.

Does anyone know if SJU will be playing in the Barclay's Winter Classic over the Christmas break?
