I thought the public story was that Harkless decommitted because of the threat of sanctions looming over UConn.
 
And I thought the private story was that Harkless wanted St. John's all along but had no desire to play under Norm. Norm gone, Harkless here.

Yes. He decommitted after the Nate Miles investigation. Not the APR stuff.

I disagree with panther. The one who had seen Harkless was Hicks from his Rice and Gauchos days. When Harkless decommitted, his recruitment blew up and he wasn't on the market for long. He had an incredible summer.

A combination of Hicks' vision, Blue's bond with Lavin and Harkless' mom's trust of Lavin were the deciding factors IMO.

Where I agree with '72 is that it was sort of a perfect storm. Harkless could have went anywhere, from Kentucky to Rutgers (lol). He decommitted from UConn and committed to us in only a matter of months.

But Lavin technically just got here. Hicks was the NYC local brain trust.
 
I think things are looking good for us next year, providing Harrison returns. If we get Jorden things could be great. I will admit the verdict is still out on Lavins coaching ability which has looked suspect. I , like many think he should have gotten an XO guru to replace Dunlap. Dunlap is really missed. We have been playing w/o a PG. Branch played to few games healthy to impact this season, and the verdict is still out on him.

Think people make to much of his so called x and o ability Think he is fine What do you think he was doing all that time with John Wooden Drawing in a coloring book He deseves more credit than some on this board give him
 
I agree that this team should be NCAA bound. Another year of maturity and more up-front depth and strength should be the differnece.
 
ESPN's very early top 25 has St. John's in the 15 to watch section, ie anywhere from 26-40.

If the team brings back D'Angelo Harrison and is in fact landing Rysheed Jordan, then I see no reason why this can't be a Top 25 next year. Harrison, Greene, Branch, Jordan, and Hooper is a very strong backcourt and will allow Lavin to keep his guys fresh so they can be aggressive on defense. And the FC will be a plus next year with Sampson, Obekpa, Pointer, Sanchez, and Gift if he decides to return.

That is a very deep rotation and the most important thing is you now have players with legitimate college experience. People in these boards can knock players like Harrison, Pointer, and Greene but the fact is all 3 of those guys are important to what you are trying to do because they've been through it. Next year will be their third and I guarantee you they will continue to get better. Some people look at guys and dismiss them if they aren't an All American the moment they step on the court. It takes time to get your game rounded. Duke is the perfect example. Ryan Kelly, Mason Plumlee, Seth Curry were not stars when they first came on the scene. But with age and experience they brought their games to new levels.
 
I agree 100%. They are going to Europe to play against the pros there. This will give more experience to everyone on the team. I feel like Jones is gonna be a great big man off the bench. Could give us a scoring boost, but needs to work down on the low blocks more. I think we might see Félix get redshirted, just a feeling. How many lineups will Lavin go through next season?

Good post but I don't think well see hooper play 1 minute in the backcourt. Too slow and not a ball handler. He's a forward in a Steve Novak mold, let's hope he can do for us what Steve has done for the Knicks.

I think Hooper will get some minutes in the two and the three, but he brings something we need, the ability to shoot and if rumors are true about Jordan he shouldn't need to handle the ball too much. I think he gets under 10mpg, unless he is hot.

Thanks Tom. These rankings are so premature, with many of this week's announcements on kids turning pro already rendering these questionable at best. For instance, Louisville at #2 with Siva graduating, Smith going pro and Ware not playing next year. I don't see them being near the top without solid guard play. I'm sure these will shift quite a bit between now and November.

Edit: And, I'm seeing that Dieng is going pro too? Not a top 15 team in my opinion.

The roster that Steve Lavin has assembled in Queens is beyond loaded.

The Red Storm will likely return their top five scorers from this past year’s team that won 17 games, and add two high-profile prospects in skilled forward Orlando Sanchez and lethal scoring guard Rysheed Jordan. Jordan should instantly blend with St. John’s perimeter triumvirate of Phil Greene, Jamal Branch, and D’Angelo Harrison, the Red Storm’s top scorer from a year ago (17.8 PPG) who missed the end of last season due to suspension.

Talented forward JaKarr Sampson also returns, and Chris Obekpa is back to anchor the middle after an impressive freshman campaign in which he averaged 4.0 blocks per game. The unsung player to watch for this team? Bouncy forward Sir’Dominic Pointer. The 6-5 Pointer has the potential to be one of the better “glue guys” in college basketball, and regularly filled up all aspects of the box score last season.

The days of waiting for St. John’s to have talented pieces are over. Anything less than a trip to the NCAA Tournament will be a major disappointment for this group.
