2012-2013 Men's Big East Conference Awards

By next year, with mostly upperclassmen, I think his job will be on the line if he (a) does not win 20+ games in the new Big East and (b) signs a couple of top 75 players.
Rebuilding after year 4 will not be an option for him. If SJ needs to rebuild in 2015, I can guarantee it will not be with Steve Lavin.

I think it's a six(?)-year contract, and he himself said that he wouldn't be here past that if he failed to get the job done. I think he gets the full six regardless of what happens next season. But I do expect a good one next year.

It might be nice if one of the guys landed another job so we can get an X's and O's guy in here.

I dont really care if a staff member gets another job.
Lavin should know himself and his team well enough to say goodbye to someone and bring in that top notch bench coach that would help him.
As Moose correctly pointed out UNCA, San Francisco, Rutgers all were games we never should have lost. Things may have been radically different with 3 more wins under our belt.
The nice guy friend has to disappear and a tougher approach in practice and with the staff must be taken.

I haven't reached the point of dislike, much less hatred, for the staff, so I'd want to see one of them land another job rather than getting canned.

@LennRobbins: JaKarr Sampson. The big east rookie of the year. Two in a row for St. John's. Harkless and Sampson #stjbb

Congrats to Jakarr.

At this point its safe to say that the streak of consecutive BE rookie of the years will end at two.

@GregLogan1: Steve Lavin says JaKarr Sampson has indicated his focus is on next year with SJU: "I'd be surprised if he's not with us." #stjbb

Congrats to Karr!
I think the combination of Karr, Sanchez and Obekpa will give SJ the best front line we have had in years. Now if we can get our backcourt in order, it could be a special year.

Then we can rebuild again :)

I know you're saying that jokingly, but I think you allude to a good point nonetheless. Our desired path to stability and sustained success is really coming into focus: have a breakthrough year next year, and then bring in a strong 2014 class. Easier said than done, but I don't think it's a whole lot more comlex than that.

Next year's roster is more or less set (assuming Jakarr is back, with the exception of what Harrison/Jordan do) and then in 2014 you have an opportunity to have Branch, Greene, Pointer, and Garrett as seniors. And that's an absolute bare minimum core, before Harrison/Jordan and not considering whether Obekpa may still be here. If, hypothetically, Lavin is able to bring in a Harkless/Sampson type talent for 2014, can you imagine how much easier Harkless/Sampson's transition would have been surrounded by that kind of veteran core? Maybe their individual numbers take a hit (or maybe they get better) but the difference in overall strength of the team under those circumstances would be difficult to argue.

If we have a big year next year, and are able to land 1-2 high level prospects, we could - finally - be off to the races on a regular basis.

It makes you wonder why Lavin didnt hire an xo guy last year to replace Dunlao?

With Gene Keady on the bench (but coaching the coaches instead of the players) there is every reason to suspect that X and O know how is present but that we may be missing Dunlap's superior skill at simplifying and communicating, OR that Branch's injury and Sanchez's absence slowed the maturation of the team. Their performance against Marquette suggests that they are practicing well.

Your right I was half joking.

But yes I have some concerns that we're teed up for a great year next year but then lose Sanchez, Karr, Marco and odds on someone else and so far in '14 Carrington is the ONLY name being mentioned. I don't think being successful 2 out of every 4 years is good and I'm hoping for the whole operation to be streamlined sooner rather than later so we don't have to go thru 2 more years after 2 good years of the young team stuff.

Which is why not getting Jermaine Lawrence was huge.

But there is a very good chance Lawrence in a one year player. Of course I wanted him to sign here, but do not believe he would have been around in 2014-15.

Couldn't agree more. That's why capitalizing on the next two years is so critical in terms of creating consistent downhill momentum for this program. I think a barometer for consistently good programs are those that are almost always mapped 2 years out. In a four year total timeframe and with all of the turnover in this game, it's difficult to really be solid for more than a 2-year plan. And even that is really hard to accomplish. Most programs hope upon hope that they feel decent about the upcoming season alone.

Right now we are close. Next year has a chance to be very good. The following year there are certainly some questions but, as I mentioned in my original comment, when you are building from a base of experienced upperclassmen it's easier to add a piece or two and win. Year 3 is a total unknown, but that's the case for most every program. Hopefully in 12 months, that picture will become clearer and so on. I'd say we're a 1.5 right now, and you want to get to 2.

Resolving the D'Angleo situation is a big piece of this puzzle as well.

It would have been very interesting had Harkless stayed around this year. Would Porter still have won Player of the Year? Even though G'town came in first, we probably would have been right up there in the standings to allow Harkless to win this heralded award. What do you think?

He might be around in 2014-15 if he doesn't qualify for 2013-14.

If he doesnt qualify, he may reopen his recruitment. I did read somewhere that he might do a year of prep school.
