Transfer Portal

Firstly, if you're going to quote me, don't insert your assumptions of what I said about our players!
I never said "all of the players who leave don't have talent"!
I've read some pretty brutal things about our players over the course of this season. I won't waste time quoting some of you because you know who you are.
From players described as having low I.Q. to being terrible shooters to playing poor defense to the point of apathy.
These instances included long time posters and respected moderators.
You and few others believe(d) that we had the talent to compete for the top 5 standing in the Big East and an NCAA invitation. We never came close to that goal and coaching was just a part of the reason.
From day one most objective posters here knew the backcourt of Curbelo and Posh was a risky move. Especially moving one of the worst shooters on the team (Posh) to the 2 guard.
The starting five initially was Curbelo, Posh, Mathis, Jones and Soriano. Wusu was a 6th man. An NCAA team? Ludicrous!
The bench? Storr was buried so we don't know how much he could have contributed earlier but once Mathis was out of the picture Storr became the key to games second only to Soriano. Stanley was a talented enigma because his defense and offense was inconsistent.
Of the bench, no one was a standout.
Now, Rick Pitino wants a roster overhaul and you and a handful of others disagree.
That's rich!!!
I'll go with what Rick Pitino wants in the makeup of the team before I start waxing poetic about the past performance of certain players.
Well said. This is a new era in st johns. The kids we have now just arent good enough. Time for an upgrade!

People here want to keep a one dimensional pg when pitino can easily bring in a pg who can defend and shoot.

Louie said it best today, “You want to win. Get players!” That is a direct shot at our limited roster.

We got the coach we all wanted - and he is telling us our roster isn't a roster that can win. By the way, our own eyes told us that for four years running. Some of our kids will be hitting the portal, and judging by the last batch of kids who hit the portal two years ago they will do fine. I wish them well. But in the meantime, I'm happy to let the greatest coach we've ever had pick the roster.

Dude don’t try to lecture me. I replied to your post and to quote you, “if you're going to quote me, don’t insert your assumptions of what I said…” when you say “Rick Pitino wants a roster overhaul and you and a handful of others disagree.” From my post:

“Every coach wants players that fit their style. With the portal and one free transfer, it is easier now than ever to turn things around with players that fit that style and Pitino will use it to his advantage. I would expect nothing less.”

So where exactly did you get that I disagree with a Roster overhaul?

I’m betting Posh returns and will be feeding Joel next season.
I think he will be back, but I also think he may be more of a 3rd guard depending on who we being in. He’s got talent, and can really defend. He has a place here for sure. He just likely won’t be a 30+mpg guy next year if we bring in some offensive PG’s. I think a guy like Clayton Jr alone would take a lot of his time. If he’s ok with that and competing for the spot, then I would love him back. He’s got a lot to offer. I think a lot of talent will be brought in and we all know MA’s experimenting with Posh at SG etc to make room for Curbelo was an epic fail.

For me part of being a fan of a team is emotionally bonding with the guys you have. College sports is somewhat different than the Pros. In college sports, when players commit to the Program you root for, you tend to want to embrace your guys warts and all. I believe part of the hope when you change coaches is that the new coach can win with the guys you are familiar with. One of the great surprises in all the years that I rooted for St. John's, was during Steve Lavin's first year when he was so successful with a roster that was fundamentally filled with Norm Roberts players that had not been very successful in the past.

When Coach Pitino was hired, some (myself included) held out hope that he would be able to upgrade our results with many of the same players we have been rooting for over the last several years. Without going in to a player by player analysis of the Pros and Cons of each player from this past year's roster, it is why emotionally some of the fans would have liked to see certain players continue on here. Coach Pitino made it clear there will be changes and that he has a plan. No one should be questioning his plan or his wisdom here. That does not mean that some of us won't be disappointed to part ways with guys that we rooted for and invested our hope in. Of course if and when we win more often than we have in the past, that disappointment will wane but for now that feeling of loss is a bit more palpable.

2/3 of Iona’s big 3..

Oh boy!!!

Could see a roster of:
PG - Clayton jr
SG - Primo Spears (or another top transfer)
SF - Storr
PF - Junior Joseph
C - Joel Soriano

That would be a heck of a starting 5 for the Pitino era based on what sg he can bring in via the portal.

Facts over emotion

Posh was a sub par BE point guard this season
We don’t know him personally and only see him on TV for games
It appears he did not get a good recommendation
He was suspended this season

He should take his talents elsewhere

Dude? I made a statement. You responded with lecture because you said you disagree. Disagreed about what exactly?
You said about our roster "Many felt it was good enough to be competitive in the BE and go dancing. It was."
By your own words, not my assumption, you and a handful of people said what you said above.
Does that suggest supporting a roster overhaul?
STOP!
RedmanNorth questioned "my values" for suggesting some players would likely have to move on as scholarships are on a year-to-year basis and, as has been made obvious, the players seeking new opportunities has eclipsed 700 as of today. There are hundreds of players that do not share yours, and Ghostbusters, melancholy or loyalty to Alma Mater.
You want to shuck and jive to your preferred conclusion? Be my guest.
We all got the coach we coveted. I trust we haven't questioned his "values" for being brutally honest about our players.
This is a multi-million dollar business and hard decisions had to be made.
Ergo, the team was not good enough to go "dancing"...anywhere, not even the NIT.

This "one dimensional pg" has been OUR pg and always hustles his butt off. Some of us believe in a kid like Posh and don't want to toss him to the curb so easily. Yes, I want to win, but I also respect these young men and remember that they are human beings, not chess pieces. If Coach decides he will not fit, so be it. But I hope Posh remains with us and gets to win next year wearing red and white.

posh is a unique player, a real warrior, and I want him to return. Any drop-off in his game this year is mostly attributable to mismanagement vis-a-vis curbelo, and less so to nagging injuries. There's plenty of room for him, Clayton, storr and wusu. I like King too but I'm sure he's gone.

If Rick tells him nothing will be handed to him and will have to compete for his spot, and he loses out to a new kid, how many backup point guards in the country would be better than Posh? And how many strictly going by defense? It would be criminal to lose him. The only thing I want lost is 10-12 lbs. from Posh.

I watched Clayton Jr against UCONN and definitely like Posh better. Since we all trust Pitino, I suggest that we sit back, let him do his job, and enjoy the ride.

Felt he played a solid game vs UConn plus he shot 43% from 3 this year which is the type of guys needed to surround Joel with. But agree, will just sit back and watch Pitino work his magic.
