Possible Coaching Candidates

Lavin took Roberts’ players and had one of the most memorable seasons in recent memory. Meanwhile, Lavin also recruited very well his first year as well.

Pitino will take Anderson’s players and give us a fun ride next year. He will also recruit extremely well because he is Pitino.

The money will come in almost immediately. The easy barometer is the jump in merchandise and season ticket sales.

Then watch how much SJU’s NIL increases (which is more important than the facilities) and the amount of free publicity the school would otherwise have to pay handsomely.

Where Lavin tried but failed to move the program into present day, Pitino will succeed.

Glad you agreed with everything I said.
However, just a reminder that this is not Louisville or Kentucky where assistants had carte blanche. The head coach will have to do more than just close the deal.

If, after all this wishful thinking, the deal to get Pitino falls through, I expect Speedy Claxton to be a leading contender. He prepares his teams well, has an excellent in-game attitude with substitutions and time outs, is a local basketball legend and comes with fewer demands in the short run but with longer term benefits with the right assistants.
Hopefully it doesn't get to it because Pitino is my top choice but my gut tells me if they paid that much to buy CMA out there is a 1b ( not Brey ) and it's going to take a couple of candidates ( not many ) to ge to speedy and I dont think it's going to be a long drawn out process due to the transfer portal but depend on a team playing of course

So what you're saying is that if it's not Pitino, it'll be a Speedy process?

Yeah not sure why you would single out Pitino for that, you would then basically reject just about any high major coach with a great record which would leave you time and time again with risky bets.

Also if anyone has shown the ability to win WITHOUT 5 star recruits at every position it is Pitino. You really think he took Providence to the Final Four with paid recruits. You think he is paying those 2 star recruits at Iona?

I always tell people if you want to know how good a coach he is go look specifically at the 2010-11 season at Louisville. He went 25-10/12-6 tied for 3rd in the BE and loss BE Tourney Final to UCONN and got a 4 seed in the NCAAs in an absolutely STACKED Big East. That roster had 5 consensus top 100 kids. Not bad but hardly overwhelming and non were surefire pros. And several of them were not even prominent players on that team.

Of the top 6 scorers on the team only Peyton Siva and Terrence Jennings were top 100 recruits. Preston Knowles was a 2 star recruit. Mike Marra was a 3 star recruit. Chris Smith was a 2 star recruit who transferred in from Manhattan College. There is no one who thought Chris Smith could play in the BE let alone contribute on a good team. And Kyle Kuric was a 3 star unranked kid who later gave up his scholarship at Louisville and walked on. Go compare that top 6 to say the team he use to coach down the road in Lexington (John Calipari). That team's 5 leading scorers were ALL consensus top 35 players. And I think Calipari is a terrific coach. But you see my point.

I was actually agreeing with you Fordham. I’m just ready to win and with the NIL around I have no reason to care about that stuff any more, which is my point. Bring the coach in who can re-engage Repole and turn this unwieldy ship around. I wanna win.

One thing I observed in a recent Pitino interview is his intense desire to win. It seems paramount above all else for him. I don't believe he considers failure an option at all.

I watched Jarvis out coach Coach K. when SJU beat Duke in Durham.

I don’t want to underestimate the extremely wide gap between Pitino and Speedy.
I was at that game as was the Maven.
I need not remind you what an excellent roster we had that helped Jarvis look so good!
My worry is that Pitino brings assistants that can't come close to filling his shoes when he leaves.
Speedy is good for another 20 years of coaching.
I'm rooting for Rick but without strings attached to mediocre assistants.

You are making a huge assumption with Speedy. You are assuming he will be successful AND be at SJU for 20 years.

Why does an assistant under Pitino has to take over the reigns once he leaves?
