How about this for a staff, break the bank:

Bring Pitino in, pair him up with a Mark Turgeon type (as a coach in waiting), steal Brandin Knight from Rutgers and then fill out staff with Masiello and put Shoes at DOBO.
I have to think we could get Mike Rice in there somewhere … I recall a lot of traffic on the site years ago as to “ we should hire him.” That was after he was let go by Rutgers . By the way , anyone know or can get the attendance at the Garden yesterday for Mich State and Rutgers ?

Assume you were joking Sly, but if not,. very hard pass on Rice. Aside from his temper issues, he hasn't coached in 10 years and his 3 Big East finishes were 5-13, 6-12 and 5-13. CMA can do at least that good.

NC Johnnie , in these dire times , and they are dire for SJU BB , a little sarcasm or humor is necessary to alleviate the Pain . Of course , Rice is not a consideration for any position at St John’s . But , if you recall 5 or so years ago , there was support for hiring him as a assistant coach . Only from some who post here.

Georgetown will probably pick up Pitino first. I just have this feeling.
And , they are a Catholic School as well . Adhering to the same standards of Catholicism as we do . They may be a bit more Liberal in some areas but , they are still a Catholic University . As Iona College is . So …

Isn’t being more liberal like being more pregnant? 🤣

This is the first time I posted a comment on this Forum but I have been an interested reader for a long time. First off, I am an avid Redmen fan. I got hooked in 1965 when I helped chaperone a group of CT kids to the old Garden to watch St. John's beat Villanova in the finals of the NIT. Not only was this Joe Lapchick's last game, but I started school in the Fall of 1965 when Coach Carnesecca began his career as the Redmen's head coach.

I also believe that St. John's needs to hire a big time coach to replace CMA. What totally surprises me is that except for Dee, Billy Donovan has not been seriously mentioned as a very viable candidate to coach the Redmen. I researched Donovan's career and found the following:

He is from Rockville Centre and is only 57 years old.
He was the starting point guard for Pitino's Providence College squad which went to the Final Four in 1987.
He is one of only four men who appeared in the Final Four as a player and won the NCAA national championship as a coach.
As coach of Florida, he started a streak of 16 consecutive 20 win seasons.
Donovan's Florida teams won back to back national championships in 2006 and 2007.
Donovan'e coaching record at Florida was 467-186 (.715) which is comparable to Sean Miller's record.
Donovan also has NBA connections.

Unless Donovan is already under contract to another team or he has serious ghosts in his closet, I think he would be a more attractive option than Pitino to replace CMA.

Chicago Bulls is Donavan’s current team.

On September 22, 2020, the Chicago Bulls hired Donovan as their new head coach with a four-year deal worth a reported $24 million.

Would love to have him but unfortunately, he is coaching the bulls so unless they fire him after this season, can't consider a serious option yet.

As Humphrey Bogart said in The Maltese Falcon . “ It’s what Dreams are made of. .” Billy would be in the Dream Category . But, hey you
Never know …..

Would really have to be during the season unless St John’s wants to wait around a month or so to make a hire. I guess if you could promise us Billy then we could wait a while lol.

The past 2 coaching searches have included the bogus Billy Donovan rumor.

The next reoccurring name that will come through as a possible coach is Paul Hewitt.

Unfortunately, this program is so below a Billy Donovan that instead of the word "rumor" one should use the word "fantasy".
Interestingly, around the end of Mullin's second disastrous year as coach a popular local name being floated was King Rice. The Maven I think was very high on him. He had coached Monmouth to two straight NIT post season invitations. He is still at Monmouth but this season his team is 4-20. He's no longer a Peacock in the coaching conversations.
Villanova is on track to recording a losing season.
Temple beat then #1 Houston a couple of weeks ago and now leads them by 4 at the half.
We beat Syracuse and Uconn.
Something went south after the Villanova loss at the Garden.
The backcourt of Posh/Curbelo disintegrated.
Soriano has regressed offensively.
Jones and Storr should have played together more rather than having Posh, Curbelo and Wusu dictate the offense.
I'm not sure this is all on CMA as I think a few players are playing selfishly and out of sync with their teammates.
The game is dictated by the backcourt and ours clearly
is not capable of providing the direction needed to win because they just don't value the ball.

Soriano regressed?
Offensively YES!
We have lost the last 4 of 5 games. GT would have been a loss if they weren't such a pitiful team.
The last five games for Joel:
Xavier-6 pts
SH-9 pts
GT-12 pts
Cr- 18 pts mostly in garbage time when we were down DDs.
Nova-14 pts

He has not been in good position to score and when double teamed chucks up bad shots.
Of course part of it is poor offensive game plans and hero ball by the guards but he has lost focus lately and just plain stunk against Xavier where he was severely outplayed.

Coincidence or not, his regressed play totally started after he went down with a leg injury at the start of the Villanova game. He has not looked like the same player since then. When he was first injured it looked really bad but he came back to play later in the half. I am not sure if this has anything to do with his play since then or not but it might be the reason.

There is no sign that he is playing hurt. No grimacing or limping. If anything he has a neutral look of disinterest and frustration.

Big man gets tired at this point in the season.
