(EXHIBITION) Michigan (MSG), Sat., Oct. 25, 7p, Big Ten+

I went to the game last night and here are some thoughts.

1) Despite the loss we are undefeated!

2) The Refs were clearly in exhibition mode. For much of the game they were the dominant force out on the floor and it impacted our play and made a tough watch from the seats. The cries of let them play were highly audible from the crowd.

3) Statistically we were outplayed on multiple levels of play:
A) Rebounding
B) Three point shooting
C) Two point shooting
D) Points off the fast break

4) Two factors kept us competitive:
A) Turnovers (FYI Michigan turned the ball over a ton and quite a few of them were unforced).
B) Points from the line (we were plus 14).

5) I love Dillon Mitchell. He does a lot of little things well. He has significantly exceeded my expectations thus far.

6) Too bad we did not ever get to see Yaxel Lendeborg play for us (kudos to the often beleaguered Mike Anderson for recruiting him here when he was mostly an unknown). Lendeborg was a true hidden gem back when he was recruited to us from JUCO.

7) Lefteris brought us back, almost singlehandedly, in OT when the game looked over. His personal 8-0 run to bring us back was very special. He probably deserved more minutes last night. He played really well in both times that he was on the floor. As a fan, I felt the pressure when he went to the line at the end of the game. Wish he had made at least one more free throw.

8) Like everyone else I have not seen much from either Sellers or Jackson yet. It is a long season though and first impressions are often not the correct ones. Here is hoping they show their worth going forward.

9) Zuby is truly great! Very glad he is on our side!

10) I am not sure how close it actually was (I need to see a replay) but the 60 foot desperation heave by Bryce Hopkins at the buzzer did not appear to miss by that much. If it had gone in, it would have been insane! That said, I hope we have some crazy moments to scream about this year!

11) Our defense on some of those easy fast breaks that Michigan scored on, were very disconcerting. Hopefully Rick fixes that problem quickly.

12) I am confident that this group will come together and give us a really memorable season, but I am not surprised that given the talented group from last year that we lost, that we are definitely not at the level yet that we were at last March.

This was a good game to lose. Exhibition means we are still 0 - 0.
With more than a week to the season opener, who doesn't think that Coach will make this a very teachable moment and will bring our guys down a peg and let them see they have to earn their accolades. Lots to learn and improve on.

Wasn’t at the game but question for those who were: what was the atmosphere like? On TV, it looked to me like there were quite a few Michigan fans under the basket at both ends of the court.
I was at the game. There were probably 35 percent Michigan fans. The Jumbotron and their chants confirmed this. And please note that the Murray Hill neighborhood in Manhattan is called Little Ann Arbor for a reason.
My simple takes on the game is that:
Lefty saved us and then turned into a pumpkin on the free throws.
Sellers and Jackson are playing scared.
Darling is our point guard.
Mitchell, Hopkins and Zuby are phenomenal.
Prey should stay under the basket at ALL times. He handles the ball like it’s a hand grenade. And he’s in love with switching on defense which created mismatches on defense with our guards covering Michigan’s talented and tall front line.
CRP will correct it all. All in due time.

Let Sellers play off the ball where he belongs and utilize his strength, perimeter shooting. He also will struggle guarding swift PGs imo.

Jackson’s is imo one those guys we tend out of gate to anoint an elite player. He was very up and down at Carolina and is adapting to a more systematic approach under RP at both ends of the court.

I suspect Rick bought into him being a difference maker out of gate and likely recruited him w the PG lure. I hear once he got to know his game in practice and workouts, he realized he was strictly an off the ball guy w work to do. In that context Ian has to make shots. He runs court well and can score on breaks, but any off guard on this team better be able to hit jumpers. He needs to evidence that sooner or later or lose time.

Marillac astutely pointed out Hopkins was driving w head down into traffic a lot. If our perimeter guys hit shots that will open things for interior guys. I believe Sellers and Sanon can do that well and hopefully Ian shows he can.

Excited about this group & expect we may take a few hits in tough OOC games, but Pitino will enter conference play w right combinations. The irony could be we will have a less stellar coverall record, but finish well in BE play and have momentum to finish the Dance much better than in 2025.

Spot on!!! I was in 107 screaming: Let them play!!!!! The Refs seemed like they were at a high school game. Awful flow of the game.

Michigan is an extremely unique team and we may not see a 3 big lineup like that again all season, and certainly not any that are close to that good. Yaxel is a legit All American that dominated the game at times.

Darling was good, not great. He looked much more comfortable today and found the right balance of trying to playmake and when to try to score himself. Seems that him knowing his role on this roster is going to be an issue. Defensively I thought he was ok though I think this was a good matchup for him on that end. Cadeau is shifty which caused Darling some problems but he's not much bigger and isn't much of a shooter so Darling had another step or two of space to try and stay in front. I don't know how he'll fare against bigger guards that can drive and shoot like the Alabama guys. Maybe he'll surprise.

Lefty is going to get minutes. He was part of our best lineup in the 1st half and obviously got us back in the game in OT. He battles on D and got 6 rebounds which is especially notable considering Rick said our biggest weakness is lack of rebounding from our guards in the post game presser.

Rick gave both Odih and Pohto mins in the first half. Odih will be a good player in time but we can table the "he's going to be hard to keep out of the rotation" takes at least for now. Pohto isn't terrible but he's clearly the worst player on the floor in games like this.

2 weeks to fix what needs to be fixed before the Bama game, a team that is going to run everything through their elite guards and will crash the offensive glass like Michigan.
Agree with all of your points. I thought the bigs competed will with the biggest team we will see all year. Tough night for Hopkins, though.

Think Pitino has a Rubik's cube in front of him about how to get spacing if he isn't getting anything out of his guards and has to play 3 bigs, as well as how to get something out of his guards,.on top of getting the press and team D where it needs to be. Otoh I am sure he will figure all of that out - just maybe not for the Alabama game which could get ugly.

Until Jackson Sanon and Sellers figure it out and/or Pitino finds roles that work for them, Liotopoulos should keep getting minutes. He has size, shooting, never hurts you when he's out there, and understands the assignment. Felt bad for him missing those FTs.

DK has the best comp for Darling's best role, which is TJ McConnell. But we need someone to turn into Halliburton and at the moment I don't see that guy.

Hard to understand how Mitchell wound up with zero assists last night. Speaks to our spacing issues, Hopkins struggles, and Michigan's size I think.

I wasn’t at the game nor , did I watch . But , if you read our voluminous posts on this game like a Newspaper , you get the idea of what happened.

First , this wasn’t a Exhibition game , It was . in name only . It was a early clash between 2 alleged top 10teams . Not meaningless at all .

Saying it doesn’t count or matter is ridiculous .

The Game was on our Home Court , MSG , the Mecca of College BB. As such , home court advantage usually counts for up to 4 points .
It didn’t help us win .

The posts on the Guard play should cause serious concern from the fan base . Most , if not all accounts saw it as horrific .
Which leads to a question on Recruiting . Why didn’t Pitino , etc go all in on getting , either Lee or Boogie , at any price ? True point guards of a high caliber .
Missing out on 1 or the other, is a bad miss . Excuses not necessary .

Our shooting ? From 3 points , if it continues will lose us more games than we want . What was it ? 4-27 ?
That’s 12 points in a OT game . If we shot 7-27 we win this game easy
Maybe getting rid of Wilcher and Brady , for spot up shooting wasn’t a good decision .
Wilcher , playing in his 3 rd season under Rick , could not possibly be as bad as the group last night .

From all accounts , the vaunted Pitino press was totally ineffective all game .

I was wondering why there was no mention in all these posts , of Hopkins or Zuby down the stretch of the game contributing important baskets ?
Did they not get the Ball enough ? Were our guards incapable of getting them the ball ?

Lastly , a overwhelming number of posters , at the game or watching at home , were screaming their heads off for Pitino to take the Press off .
Apparently , he didn’t .

As I said , at the beginning , this Game was a Exhibition game in name only .
Tossing it off as such is a error . A 2 point loss to another powerhouse team , is still a loss , whether it be October or March .
And , anyone thinking these 2 Coaches , didn’t want to win this game is mistaken .

I’m just editing info from the posts from the site and , putting them all into Context to summarize the game as seen by those who watched .

Game was fun and the atmosphere was great for an exhibition. Such an elite front court on this team. Hopefully sanon and Jackson get right because this can be a final four team if we get some high end guard play. I know Rick has a tough schedule and wants to win, but I think we’re going to have to run jackson and sanon out there to play through mistakes if we want them ready come march.

Feel bad for lefty bc he put on an amazing run in OT but it’s crazy he only has 5 career ft attempts. hopefully this was good experience

I was at the game last night and thought is was a great atmosphere. Some mentioned seeing a lot of Michigan fans behind the baskets. This is true, but not representative of the complete crowd. St. John's sold a lot of season tickets and people were in those seats (sections 104-110, 114-120). The crowd was probably 70/30 St. Johns.

A few quick points:

Dillon Mitchell is a stud. Going to be a very valuable player

Once our offense settles in, Bryce Hopkins will put up a lot of points

Dylan Darling made a nice impact against a big, talented, top-ranked, power conference team. He will help us a lot.

Regarding Sellers, Sanon and Jackson. I recommend patience. Remember, it was around this time last year that the board began to declare Kadary Richmond a bust.

Going to be an enjoyable season!

Also no student section/student presence. So, I wouldn’t complain about the atmosphere at all.
Why is the question. Was it not included in their package?

Do they not care about exhibition game?

Rather do other things on Sat nights?
