(EXHIBITION) Towson, Sat., Oct. 18, 2p, ESPN+

It’s hard to believe w all the money spent on this roster, we didn’t get a high caliber pg.
I do wonder how much money we actually spent, compared to some of the big-time programs. For example, we tried to land Xavian Lee at PG. Florida got him AND followed that up by signing Boogie Fland. It’s a murky world, but I’m guessing SJU’s war chest paled in comparison to Florida and many of the other big football schools. Hence our PG dilemma.

Yeah. It’s the only thing where I don’t think benefit of the doubt applies on this team. Pitino will make it work, especially against the non-top 3 of the BE.

But when the game slows down in the last four minutes in March, do we really have a guy we trust to find us a good shot?

I don’t care about the exhibition, but I wish the reports were “wow, look at Darling.”
We probably have guys that can create a shot (Hopkins and even Jackson). But in the exhibition it seemed like lack of a pg hurt most in breaking the press and when the guys stopped moving in the half court offense. In the half court when there wasn’t good movement they just dumped it down to Zuby and he tried to back down his man but that’s not really great offense and not his strongest suit

Over 10 million I think

Don't want to be unnecessarily negative but if we don't figure out PG that's going to put a huge dent in our potential. It would not surprise me if what Pitino said earlier about trying to play "positionless basketball" (which I think would really translate to Mitchell as point forward) is where we land - and that's going to be a tough way to make good things happen.

But it's early and just scrimmages, so let's see how it develops
I'm OK with positionless basketball 90% of the time; it really doesn't matter who initiates in a motion offense. The question is, when the shot clock gets down to 8-10 and you pull it out, who has the ball in their hands? Right now, I have no idea. We were so spoiled last year having a guy in Kadary who could get into the lane at will, had an elite midrange game and was a great passer. Someone will have to emerge. Who?

As I said yesterday, way early to make definitive judgements on Darling. Maybe grit, smarts and fearlessness make up for a lot. But physically, man he sure looked like someone who should be playing for Towson and not St. John's. We shall see. Jackson and Sanon are the two most obvious candidates, TBD whether they have the handle and vision to be that guy. Have a feeling there will be early struggles in that regard.

My concerns about primary ball handler predate the summer. I was always skeptical of Ian as the PG and equally skeptical of Darling. Sellers reeks of a desperate pivot.

I didn’t watch yesterday and, because of what you said, I don’t have urgency to watch it. We will be a really good team, but I hope this isn’t a Trent Dilfer leading the Ravens to the SB situation.
I also believe that we will be really good. How the PG situation and/or this positionless basketball evolves will be the difference between us being a Sweet Sixteen team in the tournament or a Final Four team. If that situation does not resolve itself , we will not get past the Sweet Sixteen.

Don’t know that press issues were Darling’s fault…seemed to me that whoever received the inbound pass didn’t get rid of ball quickly enough an and got caught in corner.

I’ve been in the Darling not good enough camp since day one. Not his fault in any way, he was brought in here because the staff whiffed on high-major targets.
Curious how posters who don’t have a clue why we did not sign one of the pg’s who visited characterize it as the staff having whiffed. Maybe staff was not impressed by the players attitude or character. Maybe they passed because their agent or parent was clearly going to be a problem going forward. Maybe the asking price was not justified. Who knows. But whiffed? Please share your inside information.

Pitino said he was pleased with the game and team. Amazing our posters uncanny eyes have seen so many glaring and likely insoluble problems. Hopefully coach reads these posts. He apparently doesn’t have a clue!

You are right, we don’t have a clue as to why they were unable to bring on a high level pg and you have put forth many a plausable reason.
But the fact is we Struck out, did not succèed, whiffed, call it whatever you want , but we were not successful.
Thé reason why is not important.

Joe might want to chill just a bit.’Posters were simply reacting as fans do to our first exhibition game. Didn’t sense that anyone was panicking and most have lots of confidence we will be good when the regular season starts.

Could you link to a couple of the posts that said the problems were unsolveable? Since it was poster(s)- plural- you should be able to provide a few.

Rewatched the second half, none of the turnovers vs the press occurred when the ball was inbounded to Darling. We rushed and got it in poor spots. Zuby and Hopkins, two senior guys who could move just about anyone, were weak with the basketball. Great thing to figure out now.

Well, my definition of whiffed is "missed." I don't need inside information to know that we didn't land a high-major PG, that's just a fact. I have no doubt that Pitino will make as much as humanly possible out of the situation, and if anyone can make "a silk purse out of a sow's ear" it's him.

In late 1981 I was near Coach Lou’s office and they were watching Georegetown press Unlv on Nationals Tv and the results were disasterous for UNLV. We did not fair much better a month or 2 later. We were Shell shocked in the worst first half of bball I ever saw.
I am sure Coach Pitino will fix this problem ASAP.

Yeah the press offense is the last thing I'm worried about right now. Rick will figure that out and at least that wake up call occurred early enough to get it corrected before it bites us in a game that matters.

I am interested to see how this team reacts to an aggressive ball pressure defense that thrives on forcing turnovers. Towson doesn't do that and neither does Michigan. Won't see a team that does it until Iowa State and they are elite at it
