WNBA

You make an assumption I do not watch, I watch more than I care to admit. i have been a fan of women's bb since the inception of the ct dynasty. I always enjoyed their skill and passion. It has been interesting to see other teams come up and compete for the crown. I am not crapping on the wnba I am crapping on their players association in not realizing the stage the league is in. It would make me happy to see excellent play and sterling citizens that go out of their way for the fans and grow their base. At the same time the league needs to step in and fix their officiating to stop games being taken away from teams. The pay us what you owe us shirts were an abomination. and did not sit well with a fanbase whose support you need. Not a good look.

Ps please tell me what facts I made up.
If you read back a few pages you will find that I completely agree that the league is far too physical which I believe has been allowed for reasons that are no longer valid and also that the amount of permitted physicality has made it impossible to referee which is a good part of why the refereeing is terrible. See -we agree on something!

The "made up' was ticket prices / giving away tickets. Definitely the case with a few teams, but not a league-wide phenomenon.

Revenue does not equal profit.

Nobody on the non-ownership side of anything would ever agree to "profit" as the metric because the owner can write off depreciation and a zillion other things to show no "profit" regardless of revenues. It's a classic Hollywood movie contract scam.
It is up to the owners to ensure profitability. I believe in the WNBA's case to do so they must have a product. The players are the product.

As noted above (a) hard to know due to lack of transparency; and (b) are we only looking at revenue/ profitability or growth in franchise value?

Some franchises have long been profitable (e.g. the Liberty who have more or less sold out Barclay's every game for years) and others not. My guess is that as a whole the league probably started turning a real profit (not in accounting terms) last year and is going to further grow from here (which relates to DK's point that the players are looking for a fair share of future income on their CBA covering future years, this is not a debate about past pay).

2023 average attendance was 6,600
2024 average attendance was 9,800
2025 average attendance is over 11,00

Attribute 90% of increased interest to one player, not that there aren't a large number of very talented players. Keep knocking her down and on one of these cheap shots the golden goose will be killed and the league will fall back to 2023 numbers.

Nancy lieberman wants back pay despite that she was pre WNBA

Dottie Giordano wants some NIL.

Priority points for those who know either.

So is it your opinion that the players should be paying the teams then?
Worst argument ever. No offense Austour but you are better than that. You’ve talked about your house increasing in value immensely and you are retiring next year. If you are staying in the same house how can just your house increase in value subsidize your retirement ? It has nothing to do with you being able to retire unless you are either selling and buying cheaper or borrowing against the house or your income from your job and assets can subsidize lifesytle

The players can go play somewhere else like they’ve done before. It’s a free country

And while you peopie might not agree with Silva he’s arguing from an accountant standpoint. The reality is people who buy sports franchises for the most part are already rich and are buying them as trophies but before 2 years ago let’s say maybe 3 when biz metrics went from disgusting to Norm Robert’s era not one of you would invest in a business not making money. Now with Clark and admittedly the year before they started improving but still no biz sense now it makes sense to invest in the future of your biz

I guess I should have put the laughing emoji at the end of my post.

But let's pretend it wasn't a joke.

Trust me. I am counting on the house as an emergency retirement fund in case I live longer than I think I will, government healthcare assistance disappears and the markets tank. I can buy a condo in the valley or a place in Palm Springs if need be (slumming it). But yeah , I really don't think it will be a problem.

However, I do understand the value of what i have and if I need it it is there (and then some if he who we don't talk about eliminates the capital gains tax on real estate investment). Same with a sports franchise. None of these guys need these franchises. As you said in the next post, they're toys. And if they suddenly need the money there will be another oligarch somewhere to take it off their hands for a very tidy profit. Some posters talk about these franchises like they're mom and pop hardware stores staffed by ne're-do-well cousins and in-laws (and yes many of them are staffed by ne're-do-well cousins and inlaws, just of a different type). As I believe DK said they are also very valuable even just as tax dodges.

Luckily I don't have to worry about the players leaving and decimating the value of my investment. These ladies represent the top 0.1% of their field Yet they're paid like they're factory workers, and in some cases shift managers. I'm glad it appears their union seems to be in a good place and understand their value, as the value of these franchises and the league as a whole skyrocket. I'm sure they'll do well in the next CBA.

PS greed ain't good! (Except when it comes to STJ wins and losses of course.) Gordon Gecko was the villain.

Beast, do you know Dottie? We're great friends with her and her husband, and live in the same gated communities on Long Island and Florida.
