Vince

Anthony Glover played center on a team that won at Duke and finished the season with a BET Championship. Prey at a legit 6'10 and with strong defensive skills can give 5 to 10 minutes a game at backup center.
That said, CRP will easily bring in a serviceable backup center to give the production Vince provided last year.

Maker and Vince aren't leaving unless someone of equal talent was coming in.
Has a team with a 6 ft 5 (and I'm being generous) Center ever won a modern day National Championship? And if so was it an outlier?

If we’re guaranteed to get Zuby for 32 mins per game every single night this is a non issue. Even though I don’t think either can play much 5, we can lean on Mitchell and Prey to eat 8 mins at the 5 when needed.

The major problems arise if Zuby has a high ankle sprain and has to miss a 4 game stretch in early-mid Feb. In that case Mitchell and Prey needing to play 40 mins at the 5 is unsustainable. Might not sound like it, but Vince being able to eat 12-15 mins in a situation like that could go a long way.
Spot on.

Prey is 6’10 230 and held his own better against Dixon and other stronger bigs than Zuby did.

Prey-Hopkins- Mitchell would be a pretty big frontline with + rebounding.

For whatever reason, I just don’t think Pitino will play Prey at the 5 regardless. He’ll probably sign someone to replace Vince and play them there.

Can we make it to the 2nd week of the tournament first. ;) Last time we made Sweet 16, Eric Barkley was running the point
Sure. But the point I was making is the days of Glover are Barkley were pretty much a different game than now. So its not really comparable. Comparing eras in any sport over a 20 year stretch is so difficult.

I liked Vince. Even end of year Pitino was mentioned as playing him next to Zuby. I hope thats still the plan with whoever is next up.

I think we'll find a guy who can eat 12-15 minutes in that situation. But whether its Vince or someone else, we would be screwed no matter what if Zuby is out.

Yes and that team with Glover (and a short bench in both depth and height) got bounced in the second round of the NCAA by Gonzaga who 6’11” Center scored 16 points in the first half (he averaged under 10 points per game) which we lead but Matt Santangelo killed us in the second half as we ran out of gas. Glover did have a good game. IIRC Chudney Gray and Donald Emmanuel were the only two subs that played for us.

Bottom line, you don’t want to be court with no height and even in positionless
Basketball, you need more than just two guys on your team who are 6’9” or better.

The Zuby 4 talk from Pitino is comical. Him at the 5 is what makes us so good. You cannot beat that kid off the dribble. We may never have a 5 that can do that again. The little bit he gives is getting bodied in the paint he makes up 10 fold with his switchability.

He gets a chance to showcase his defensive versatility switching on everyone anyway and will get a chance to take 1-3 dribbles this year and shoot from 3.

Rick says plenty of comical things but when it comes to 5 players on a basketball court comical isn't a word I'd use to describe it.

The same versality you mention would apply if he was playing 4 or 5. He covered 5 different players on one possession in down the stretch last year. I wonder how quickly we could have solved Creighton in the BE Final if we had someone occupying Kalkbrenner and then freeing up Zuby.

No....but Fred Slaughter who was 6'5 played center for undefeated and national champion UCLA in 1964.
That team had one of the greatest guard tandem in college basketball history with Walt Hazard and Gail Goodrich.
Kinda like the backcourt Rick is constructing with Boogie Fland and Ian Jackson 😉
If Rick plays small we still will have a frontrourt with guys 6'8, 6'8, 6'7 without Zuby on the floor if Rick doesn't bring in a natural 5.

Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy......this is so exciting!!!!

He can do it. That isn’t in question at all. It’s just that him at the 5 is such a weapon for us. It’s like getting 35 homers from a SS in baseball.

Pitino has been talking about him playing the 4 for 2 years and he never has…even when we were begging for it with Soriano. Not a single minute.

Which is why it worked when we actually put Vince in against Creighton. Ricky P just didn’t have enough from Vince to give more than spot minutes. My bet is Rick is going to grab a guy who can actually decelop into the next SJU center after Vince, with real size.

Hear you. I liked him too, but his production is easily replaceable.
And he has once last chance to get some bigger minutes and perhaps more $ some place else

Given the timing of it, seems like this is being done to ensure Prey is getting minutes from somewhere. The Mitchell addition never really made sense to me unless Rick wanted to play stretches of a giant lineup with Hopkins, Mitchell, and Zuby/Vince on the floor together which I think would have been a terrible idea.

Yes, if Zuby misses a very large period of time we're screwed regardless. But a 4-5 game sample is small enough to survive if we have the competent depth.
