SJU Offseason Thread (portal and recruiting discussions)

Some are anticipating where Jackson will transfer to after St. John’s. I guess that’s the name of the new game a lot of turnover and a lot of uncertainty from year to year. This from sports illustrated:

“With 5-star pedigree, solid production as a freshman and decent shooting splits, Jackson's size and athleticism could make him a target for multiple teams next year if the rising sophomore can muster a big season at St. John's.”

Really?
How I (we) will miss watching a freshman evolve into a senior as I recall watching Mullin, Jackson, Sealy and many others.

Yes.

Could it be multiple NBA “teams” in question?

I am hopeful the transfer scenarios will evolve and this current mindset of "one-year contracts" will fade. Real championship teams/programs take more than one year build.

I hope we'll see more guys like Zuby -- comes in, learns, improves, understands the benefits of his current situation and chooses to stay.

Definitely a sign of the times but if Jackson has a big season then he's going Pro.

Zach on CRP & Ian:

Just spoke to Rick Pitino about Ian Jackson.

A few notes:

-- Convinced Jackson can play PG. Thought it was his natural position when he saw him in high school.

-- Sees him as a bigger Daniss Jenkins when Jenkins first got to Iona.

-- There were always those who thought Walter Clayton Jr. wasn't a point guard and he obviously turned into a pretty good one.

Much more to come from this interview.

I would never question Pitino's player development skills. I saw Jackson in High School a bit and a little bit in college. I am hoping Pitino can turn him into a top class point guard. It would certainly fill a vital roster need.

Like on all of this, I have no certitude one way or the other and remain firmly in wait and see mode.

Talk about taking Marillac and Lawmanfan on a rollercoaster with those quotes. Geez.

Agree to some degree, but Rick made it clear after our games to comment on assisted baskets, versus unassisted baskets and he seemed angry after games where we had low assists numbers.

His praise for Devion and Kadary often revolved around their ability to set other guys up for open shots.

So this idea of not a pass first true point guard is a little baffling to me, but I guess it can work.

We all know teams where the PG is also a scorer, even the vintage Knicks teams with Clyde Frazier he could certainly score, he was not just an assist man.

I'd love a Bobby Hurley (college version) type, very high assists and could score when needed to. OK, OK, just a poor man's edition of BH.
Travis Ford type for me

Gotta trust the Rick on this, imo.

I prefer the Drake guy to the Drexel guy. What makes the Drexel guy any better than Cruz Davis.
Actually Andrew, I liked Cruz Davis when he was here. I saw something worthwhile in his game. It was injuries that really prevented him from finding any kind of a role at SJU, but his numbers at Hofstra were good and Pitino recruited him to both Iona and St. John's.

Rick no kid, maybe he doesn't want to put 3 years into a player. As things stand he still puts his best into the players he gets. I think we all would say we see that.

Definitely not. Putting together a talented team who will run an NBA offense. Not relying on a blue blooded point guard.

Agreed.

I also think too much is being made by his Ian Jackson tweet.

I think they swung at a big fish for PG and now will probably look at a mid major supplement while using Jackson at the Point as well.

They are not going to have an all-star at every position. The roster is going to be awfully good even if they don't have an elite PG.

Not going to have an all star at every position? There are guys here who will be disappointed if the all stars don't go 7 deep. ;)

I had Easter vision of outside chance of resurrection.
My first question as a doubting Thomas
