Strike while Iron is hot? Drop Red Storm? Use Johnnies?

Had to revive this thread because at the game yesterday, there were some young fans behind me who appeared to be recent grads. And they were chanting "Let's Go Storm". I had to chuckle. But yeah people that age don't know Redmen.

I agree. No need to have changed the name. Should have just dropped the Native American mascot and association. "Redmen" then would have simply referred to uniform color, like Syracuse and Stanford. Way too late to make the correction now, but would have worked had they gone that direction at the time
Syracuse Orangemen was a homage to the Onondaga Nation (red and orange alleged skin color of Native Americans). Syracuse at one time had a similar mascot but many many years ago dropped that and later on dropped “men” for simply Orange.

A New York Times reporter labeled us Redmen in a piece he wrote covering our then early years football team I believe.

In 1973, we played at the College of William And Mary in the NCAA tournament. Their nickname was/is the Tribe and they had a big Indian head in the football stadium. We sort of "borrowed" it, okay, yanked it off, and walked into the arena with it. We lost to Penn by a point and W & M and SJU weren't exactly pleased.
If I recall correctly they dropped the Tribe.

Choice, make elite eight or better or stoke “stuff” on redmen, red storm or “fighting emus” Let it go lol
