Strike while Iron is hot? Drop Red Storm? Use Johnnies?

Again, what do you do with the Women’s teams. Do a Lady Volunteers deal? How many schools actually do that.

The reason for the mascot and name change is because the name became synonymous with the mascot and that wasn’t (hasn’t) changed. So they made the choice to make a clean break.

Our student body including those grad students who continued their graduate/law studies immediately after getting their undergraduate degrees (with the exception of folks who have decided to go back for an undergraduate or graduate degree later than normal) were not even born when we changed the name.

Well past the time to let it go.
I'd like to see Johnny Thunderbird thrashing to Ride the lightning pre game before our pregame music and player intros start

Maybe come out from the stands to the music and head to the floor

With Pitino here, everything seemingly pointing up, and with the knowledge it won't last forever, should we be...
  • continuing to push for facilities updates NOW
  • continuing to get doner lists updated and slow funding drips ($5 a month from tens of thousands) done NOW
  • finally moving on dropping "Red Storm" and pivoting to "Johnnies". If anyone could shepeard this idea forward it would be Rick Pitino.
The horse, the tornado, the "storm" - it's just terrible.

I'll hang up and listen.
Go Johnnies! I’m all in!

I think it’s a generational thing . The St John’s when I went to school was always the Redmen .

Johnnies is fine too .

I have never liked Red Storm . Tended to ignore it . Still do .

Understand others have different views .

Most of the folks on this site are older. Unfortunately the older crowd hanging on to the Redmen name will eventually die and most younger fans growing up with the Red Storm name won’t care about the past name.

In my freshman year of 1976 we received a booklet called Smoke Signals and it described the origins of Redmen. Apparently some students “borrowed “ a Cigar Store Native American and brought him court side to the Original MSG.
Btw, Syracuse are the Orange Men, or just the Orange. We should be the Red Men with no NA branding. Then we will be the Red Men again with the Johnnies as Cosa Nostra. Our thing. Not the Mob. We NEVER chant: let’s go Red Storm.

Orangemen officially became the Orange about 20 years ago.

The chant was "The Fly is open, let's go Peay!"
Due to Fly Williams being on that team, guy from Brooklyn. had the "privilege" of playing against him one night when SJU would open the gym on Tuesdays and Thursdays for alumni. Gave him a shot from the corner, swish. Stepped up on the next play, blew by me for a dunk. My team lost, never to see the court again.

'During his time at Austin Peay, Williams scored 1,541 points with a 28.5 point per game average.[7] He left college due to hardship and pursued a professional career. In 1975, Austin Peay was able to follow up Williams' two years of scoring numbers by opening the Dunn Center, a larger gymnasium, which accommodated the increased attendance at basketball games.'

In 1973, we played at the College of William And Mary in the NCAA tournament. Their nickname was/is the Tribe and they had a big Indian head in the football stadium. We sort of "borrowed" it, okay, yanked it off, and walked into the arena with it. We lost to Penn by a point and W & M and SJU weren't exactly pleased.

In 1985 in what was known then as the Carrier Dome during a game bs Syracuse, someone sort of “borrowed” (okay, yanked it off) the Indian head off of our mascot (a live person in costume), ran up the stairs and out of the Arena. It was never returned.

Oh so that was you! 🤣 Was at that game and recall a roudy group coming into the arena with the Indian head. When bringing up heartbreaking losses this as to rank up there. Frank Alagia had to play hero ball driving into the trees instead of following the play call which was to go to Billy Schaffer our best player who that year averaged a still all time St. John’s season high average of 24.7 PPG.

This has been my suggestion for a while. Just become the St. John's Red. The we can have Red Men for branding instead of Redmen.
