Strike while Iron is hot? Drop Red Storm? Use Johnnies?

Changing the name at thus point is silly and no sense. It's 30+ years.

Ask 99% of people why Lakers, Dodgers, Knicks, Padres, Pacers etc have their names and names and they won't have a clue or care.

If focus on anything, slightly refresh the logo and uniforms.

I almost exclusively refer to them as St. John's or Johnnies, can't remember the last time I've called them Red Storm.

As was pointed out St. John's Johnnies doesn't sound or look good, best to stick to Red Storm, but what the school can do is offer better Johnnies apparel. Make an official Johnnies logo and slap it on shirts with the StJ logo on there too for brand consistency. I'd buy it.

Orangemen officially became the Orange about 20 years ago.

Another dumb decision by the Syracuse Administration at the time .

At 1 time , I think the Orangemen had a Indian mascot . I may be wrong
But , when they first began play in the Dome , they had the Dome Ranger and there wasn’t any Indian affiliation .
Many College Presidents , our Presiden Fr Shanley aside , are total A holes .
They are not impervious to dumb decisions .We see that time and time again .

A case in point about a school that for a long time resisted the changing of their Mascot .

The Univ of North Dakota , a long time NCAA Hockey power , were called The Fighting Sioux
The school had the full endorsement of the Sioux Nation that represented the Tribe .

The NCAA , after it got tired of penalizing Cleveland State for BB, decided to target No . Dakota and the mascot .

The NCAA basically threatened to throw the School out of any Athletic competition .
Law Suits followed .

North Dakota refused to capitulate for years . Until finally they had to succumb to the mighty NCAA and change their logo , mascot , etc

In my own Anti NCAA protest , I ordered from the School a Fighting Sioux Jacket which I still have and wear quite frequently . I feel good about it .

I get Emails from their School still . Hockey tickets , Sioux merchandise , etc

There was a lot of misplaced , misguided dictates on the Mascot issues with both , the NCAA, NFL, Etc .

Some schools , Florida State refused to knuckle under and remained the Seminoles , with the full support of the Tribe .
In Hockey we still have the Blackhawks , a Tribe but , most people don’t know that .
Chiefs and Braves have stood tall too.

Getting back to BB and the BE , how have Syracuse , Pitt, BC , even ND done in the ACC since they left ?

Answer , terrible .

Yes ,they say it’s all about the $$$$ and Football but , what has it done to benefit these schools ?

Look at what the NCAA has done to March Madness .
It’s estimated 13 SEC schools will get into the tourney , 10-11 from the Big 10., maybe 4 from the BE.

When you have Wake Forest playing California in BB on a Saturday because of League expansions , how ridiculous is that .?

As an Irish Catholic, I find the name Orangemen a disgusting reminder of how my ancestors were treated in their own country. Up The Republic!

In my freshman year of 1976 we received a booklet called Smoke Signals and it described the origins of Redmen. Apparently some students “borrowed “ a Cigar Store Native American and brought him court side to the Original MSG.
Btw, Syracuse are the Orange Men, or just the Orange. We should be the Red Men with no NA branding. Then we will be the Red Men again with the Johnnies as Cosa Nostra. Our thing. Not the Mob. We NEVER chant: let’s go Red Storm.
This actually is not a bad idea. To the lawyers on this site, does splitting the word Redmen into two words Red Men still connote a Native American reference? Also, using Johnnies by itself is okay but I agree with Panther that when coupled with St. John's, it does become redundant.

I like your reply but , do you think Syracuse adopted the Orange for any reason , other than they wore a Color Orange uniform ?
Kind of like us with the Red Uniforms .

I’m Irish Catholic too , but have never had a problem with Notre Dame Fighting Irish .
Neither has their School, since they feature it on their uniforms , merchandise and TV Commercials .

I’m Off to Dublin to join the IRA. Ever hear Dermot O’Brien sing that song ?
Check it out . It’s classic

You still have issues of women's teams nickname and what is the mascot to be?

Why not go all in with the current SJU mindset? St John’s No Bulls? St John’s Maspeth Savings and Loans?

Everything is for sale - why not the team name? Huge revenue opportunity there.

My suggestion would be Mike's Red Storm (leave it to the imagination whether it's Mike Repole, Mike Maher or Jersey Mike!).

Well, I advocated selling the arena name. Could be JPMorgan Chase Stadium at Carnesecca Arena.

About 2 years ago also raised the concept of private equity investment, which in the past year some meetings have been held. This year is perfect to try to monetize our on court success.

The last thing we need in a bad year is the NY Post back page saying St Johns Maspeth Savings and Loan Crisis :)

Let's play it safe and go No Bulls
