I bought a hat from their website. It’s red, has JOHNNIES in white across the front with SJU underneath.

It was bad enough when we were Under Armour that they had St. John’s in Minnesota merchandise displayed at an event to introduce their branded gear for St. John’s NY at their showroom store in SoHo (when I and another poster pointed it out, they removed it and that was at least 50% of what they had out), now we want to follow them with the nickname. The SoHo event was an embarrassment on Under Armour for not knowing the difference and sending the stuff to the store and us in terms of how far the mighty had fallen.

The e Washington Commanders , a ridiculous name , are very seriously trying to return to the Redskins .
The Atlanta Braves , Kansas City Chiefs , Florida State Seminoles never bowed to the Crazies that allegedly believed it was a slight to our Native Americans .

To the contrary ,many of the Tribes went beserk when faced with the prospect of having their Teams stripped of their Nicknames .
I think the Seminole Tribe , actually sued or threatened to sue , if the Seminole name and likeness were removed from Florida State teams .
Many of us old timers also know the story behind how we became the Redmen . A NY Sports reporter coined the phrase in writing his story on a game we played back in the day . He referred to the Team as Redmen due to the color of the Uniforms , not any mention of Indians or Tribes .
The Indian evolved over the Years as a mascot but , it didn’t seem to offend most of us or , the general public .
Yes , we should reinstate the Redmen as our Mascot .

Red Storm is a useless name .

The Commanders are not changing. That was refuted. They will bring back some of the logo on Vintage merch

We can always use Johnnies prominently for chants and referring to team…like how the Giants can be the G-Men or New York Football Giants.

Since Trump is a New Yorker and apparently a sports fan, St. John's should send a delegation to meet with Trump to get him to issue an Executive Order to change the name back to the Redmen. He signed a similar order to change the Alaska Mountain from Denali back to Mount McKinley. Our delegation can include Keegan Bradley, the captain of the Ryder's Cup, Pitino, Repole and Father Shanley. Just a wacky idea.

The main problem is that the St. John's Johnnies sounds ridiculous. Fine as a nickname when said alone, terrible as an official name.

The Indian evolved over the years but , wasn’t how the name Redmen originated .

For comparison , St Peter’s BB team is the Peacocks . The Ladies team is the Pea Hens .

I live in S Carolina . My Granddaughter goes ti the Univ of SCarolina . The team is called the Gamecocks .

No one in the State refers to them as anything but , the Cocks . It’s all over their merchandise and everything .
The chant at their games is “ Go Cocks , not Go Gamecocks .”
Every one here loves it .

If you see a Lady or young student with the shirt , etc , everyone says “ go Cocks .and the gals reply in kind .

Way too much has been made about these innocent nicknames or mascots .

Have any of you who are Irish Ancestry complained about the Notre Dame Fighting Irish ?

Again, what do you do with the Women’s teams. Do a Lady Volunteers deal? How many schools actually do that.

The reason for the mascot and name change is because the name became synonymous with the mascot and that wasn’t (hasn’t) changed. So they made the choice to make a clean break.

Our student body including those grad students who continued their graduate/law studies immediately after getting their undergraduate degrees (with the exception of folks who have decided to go back for an undergraduate or graduate degree later than normal) were not even born when we changed the name.

Well past the time to let it go.
