Although, I have “retired” from competing, I was a huge fan of trivia contests, especially baseball trivia. A few of my favorite “fun” facts

1) In his career, Greg Maddox faced 20,421 batters; he went to a 3-0 count on 133 of them
2) In his career, Tony Gwynn had 9 5 hit games and 45 4 hit games; he struck out 2 times in a game 34 times, 3 times in a game ONCE
3) In 1980, at age 33, Nolan Ryan struck out his 3,000 hitter; from then to the end of his career he struck out more hitters than HOFs Warren Spahn, Bob Feller, Juan Marichal, Tom Glavine, and Don Drysdale

Bonus -
While playing point guard for San Diego State, Tony Gwynn amassed 590 assists; in a 20 MLB career, he struck out 434 times.

All amazing. I’m not sure if this as as incredible.

Ted Williams in his rookie year hit .327 with 31 HR and 145 RBI. He was not an all star. If he had been an all star that year then he would have been an all star in FOUR different decades.

Yogi Berra, 414 strikeouts and 358 homers in 19 seasons.
Joe D. 369, 361 in 13 seasons.
Two great hitters.

Ted Williams 709, 521 in 19 seasons.

What great hitters!

Cy Young has the most career wins 511 and losses 316 for a pitcher. Cy young started 815 games and completed 749 of those games. And the most amazing thing is Cy Young never won a Cy Young award!!! (yes said in jest the last one)

Actually Cy Young was not called Cy Young when he played. He was Sid Young during his playing days.

If Ichiro had came over sooner, he might have broken some records.

-He had a career .375 batting average against HOF pitchers
- had a 63 game stretch where he averaged 2 hits a game. Longest ever
- Ty Cobb had 1600 MLB hits by the time he was 26. Ichiro had 0

Thats pretty amazing that 63 game stretch averaging 2 hits a game.

Don Mattingly hit 6 grand slams in the 1987 season, which was the all-time record (since tied).

His career grand slam total, counting that season, was 6.

The sad part is today they would take rod cerew and tony gwynn and change their swings to hit more home runs. Setting the table has become a thing of the past
Brandon Nimmo has become a poster child for that IMO. Stats don’t necessarily bear it out but it appeared to me relatively early in the year he was TRYING to hit the long ball and had altered his swing in the attempt. Just observational, but it appears way less of those long ABs, more easy fly ball outs, more swings and misses.

During DiMaggio’s 56 game hitting streak, he hit .408; during the same 56 games in the Red Sox schedule, Ted Williams hit .412. Of course that was the year Williams hit .406; maybe, in some ways more impressive, upon returning from Korea after missing all but 6 games in 1952, and playing only the last 37 of the 1953 season, Williams stepped out of his fighter plane to hit .407 over those 37 games.

The picture of consistency - Stan Musial had 3,630 during his career, 1,815 at home and 1,815 on the road. To compound that oddity, he also had 78 stolen bases, 39 at home and 39 on the road.

Minnie Minoso played returned to play in the majors in 1976 and 1980 at the age of 52 and 56 respectively. He only had 1 hit in 12 at bets during those two stints. Doing so made him the only player to play in 5 decades, but it also dropped his lifetime BA from .2997 (300) to .2993 (299)
