SJU Portal Targets

What’s the alternative?
As an old oil and gas attorney, I know there are certain truths. When you get to a prospect early and believe in it, be decisive and buy up what you can. Once other folks get in the game, the price only increases and you wind up paying much more, even for mediocre prospects. For the Johnie's, they had a chance to wrap guys up early, but they did not do so for whatever reason. At this point, make a decision and overpay for who you want before the well runs dry.

Vincent O seems more like a stretch 4 than a 5 like Zuby and Maker are. He is an intriguing prospect to say the least.

While he's listed as a 4 in many services he's never taken a 3 at USC. I'd expect a stretch four to have at least taken a few.

In the world of oil, gas and college hoops, there's only one way to do business:

It's hard to overpay when you are a mid-sized oil and gas company (St John's) bidding against Exxon (UNC, Kentucky, Baylor, etc) for the same prospects.

Just curious, who could they have wrapped up early that they passed on?

That's why it would have made sense to wrap someone up early. Amari Williams could have been had from day one, but staff wanted Cliff O. I get it, but now Amari's price only goes up.

How did you determine Williams would have jumped on St John’s offer rather than explore his other ones? Indiana, Creighton and Florida are not chopped liver.

Good point. I do not have any inside info. Maybe Bensley, DJ, etc. Or Amari Willaims. Or I imagine they could have been in play for one of the 35 or so top 50 prospects who have already committed. Instead, they are admittedly playing the waiting game,

Sorry, but the answer is no one that is a real difference maker. You don’t just sign bodies for the sake of signing bodies. Here’s that dreaded word again, patience. Either Pitino knows what he is doing or he doesn’t, me, I’m willing to wait and find out because I am pretty sure he DOES have inside info.

Would locking up Bensley and Amari early have moved the needle for you one way or another? IMHO we'd have plenty of people here complaining that we settled, especially with new guys portalling every day.

Good point. I don't. Just surmising from what I read that RP's #1 is Cliff O. Given Cliff O's suitors and elongated process, I imagine Williams, given his college level of play and lower ranking, could have been had earlier. I have been wrong at least once and will be again, as my second wife often tells me. But, I have continuosuly read that the staff is being patient and waiting. It tells me they were in no hurry to jump on guys early, just the opposite. So, we may never know.

Yes, then you are probably looking for 1 homerun, not 3 or 4.

Walking away from Cliff may be practical to some and effect pursuit of other quality bigs, but if visit is legit you can’t fold the cards. He would move the needle here re rebounding, shot blocking & being up tempo catalyst, so play it out imo.

Sorry, I should caveat every post with RP knows best (of course) for those who need the obvious stated.

This is like buying a used car in so many ways. When i am patient and look around i get the car at the price I want. When people show me a car at an inflated price it behooves me to walk away. The guys the staff has seen price might have been out of alignment with their worth. So they passed.

Do we have a visit date locked in on Cliff? Thought so, but can't find anything with visit date. Maybe he already visited and we are just waiting to see if we are still in?

No, but you could caveat posts complaining about players we could have signed but didn’t by saying you have no idea what players you are referring to.
