@Xavier, Wed., Jan. 31, 6:30p, FS-1

To be transparent I don't always agree with your take on Jenkins, but you are 100% correct that our offensive choices at the end of the game yesterday made no sense. When Ousmane fouled out of the game and we were down only two at just under the five minute mark and with us in the double bonus we had a clear path to victory. From there on in, we got to the line only once and Soriano only got a single shot which was a jumper. Hoisting threes by our guards made no sense. We clearly needed to press our advantage, get the ball inside, go to the hoop, shoot foul shots and grind it out. Obviously Xavier knew that was our strategy and defended it well enough but we needed to get it inside and draw fouls anyway. Trying to get the ball down low to Joel should have been our go to every time down the floor.

I also agree that our guards do not get to the line often enough and specifically Jenkins. I was amazed that he has shot less free throws than either Zuby or Luis even though they have played about 1/3 of Jenkins minutes. For comparison sake Tyler Kolek has shot 111 free throws thus far this season, Devin Carter 96 (19 against us alone) and Posh has shot 66. Thirty eight free throws this season for Jenkins, 21 games in, is far too little for a player who is on the floor the most on the team and plays primarily with the ball in his hands
The free throws are a great stat. It's amazing how Jenkins hasn't improved on that and CRP seems to not make it a point. He has the quickness to get to the paint and draw a foul. Why isn't he doing that, like ever? So many pull-ups.

If we beat UConn, Marquette, and/or Creighton to get to 19-13 and lose in our first game; yes, I'd feel confident about making the dance. There's numerous scenarios to where we could get to 19-13 (11 conference wins) and be rather firmly in the NCAA Tournament.
We are currently in 4 way tie for 5th place in BE. Can't see the BE getting 8 or 9 teams in the tournament. Depending on performance in the BET remaining games with Providence and Butler could be tiebreakers.

Xavier handed us the game on a platter with that Ousmane foul out and then technical. Soriano was eating that backup alive. And we respond with one Soriano jumper as you pointed out.

To lose with anything other than dump downs to Soriano is completely inexcusable.

We had no business being in that game late. Olivari is a low IQ player too. He just makes more shots than our guys.

Settling for a Jenkins 3 while we were in the double bonus with Soriano against an overmatched backup center is exactly what Miller wanted.

As for the NCAA Tournament stuff, I'm of the belief that looking at a Lunardi or bracketmatrix type bracketology at this point of the season is a fairly useless endeavor given how much of the season is left.

Infinitely more useful in my opinion is the bracketology based on rest of season projections. Unfortunately there are only two sites that do that (as far as i know) and they have a pretty big gap between them.

Bart and TeamRankings simulate the rest of the season 10,000 times and do their bracketology that way.

Bart currently has us as the last 8 seed with an 83% chance to make the tourney. Bart has been the site highest on us all season. - https://barttorvik.com/tourneycast.php

TeamRankings is not quite as optimistic slotting us as the last 10 seed with a 58% chance of making it - https://www.teamrankings.com/ncaa-tournament/bracketology/

I like the elbow pull-ups as I’ve posted a hundred times. I hate his leaners and off-balance crap. He literally avoids contact…leans away from it. He never shot fakes. He is the antithesis of a Jay Wright player.

He had one shot fake last night that resulted in a layup and it caught everyone off guard.

Absolutely. He has a nice mid-range game, which makes his lack of getting into the lane more frustrating. He has untapped potential but it's also his 5th year in college.

I agree with you on the 3 point shot last night. But another non-Soriano shot I would've accepted is Jenkins getting into the lane and drawing a foul. I don't have inside info, but it doesn't seem like CRP is demanding that out of him. I don't get it.

They certainly can change, I was looking for that “flip” coming off the Nova game and a week of practice and my feeling after last night it just ain't gonna happen, hope I am wrong.
I’m sure no one is in the mood for a history lesson, but…

One thing about our program is there is no rhyme or reason. We’ve had many improbable wins throughout the years.

Lou’s final season, after a 3 game losing streak that left us at (10-7), we destroyed #6 UConn at MSG and ended up sharing a BE regular season title (our last).

Hatten’s senior year, after losing 6 of their last 7, we shock #5 Duke at MSG.

Remember Lavin’s first season. After a 3 game losing streak that included two 25 point losses that left the team at (11-8) they proceeded to beat #3 Duke at the Garden. Then 3 more ranked teams after that.

Coach Mullin’s 3rd season, after losing 11 straight, we beat #4 Duke and #1 Nova back to back.

Just saying crazy stuff happens without explanation.

Recruiting pressure will obviously be high to replace Joel & Jenkins scoring output. I know we assume we will kill portal, but never a sure fire assumption. A lot of holes to fill, but keeping the faith. I personally think we won’t be a serious BE title contender until year 3 of Rick tenure.
I think our center will be better defensively, but a low double digit scorer at best. Other guys will need to pick up slack. Although I guess if there really are no other guys then it's a clean slate regarding points distribution.

On the free throws.
Per 100 possessions. Jenkins is 8th on the team for free throw attempts per game (3.4). He's ahead of are Alleyne, Dunlap, Taylor, Wilcher.

Zuby, Soriano and Luis are top 3.

They can’t play together. I’m not sure how much more proof anyone needs. They both need the ball in their hands and there is only one ball. Neither one of them makes shooters better.

Dingle disappears in the middle of every game no matter how well he starts. He usually reappears at some point in the second half and then then he’s gone after the under 4. Whose fault that is will vary by poster. The last two minutes of every close game our offensive is literally just Jenkins jumpers unless someone rebounds his miss.

Dingle took just 6 official shots yesterday and he was awarded 10 FTs (8-10). Jenkins had 1 FT on 17 shots. The Xavier starting guards had 26 FTs and made 24 of them.

We have absolutely no ball movement. We have no offensive chemistry. It’s all 1 on 1 and dump downs to Soriano. There is not a single team in the Big East other than maybe DePaul that moves less on offense than us.

I thought Jenkins played one of his best games offensively yesterday, but he clearly doesn’t value free throws. You don’t shoot a three as 30% shooter when you are in the double bonus, your center is on fire, and the opposing starting center has fouled out. There is only one play there.

Just once can we win or lose with a Soriano shot? Do we have to lose every close game with a Jenkins jumper?
How do you explain the 13-2 X run in the last 2minutes and 37 seconds ?
Jenkins probably was responsible for that too?

Dingle got his free throws on his 3 point attempts as I recall and he dunk most of them.

It’s not Jenkins fault that Dinkle cannot blow by defenders and score . You never mention that .

And , he can’t Handle his defensive assignments . Which is why RP has little confidence in him 🇹.

If you notice over the course of the season , Dingle and RP have little chemistry . Pitino constantly shoots arrows at him .
Last night , when he took Dingle out , he literally ripped him a new one .
You can blame Jenkins all you want but , Dingle has shown he’s only a All Star against Columbia , Dartmouth etc .,

If he thought he was going to use this as leap into the NBA, he’s mistaken .

Well Saturday we face UConn and get to face Tristen Newton who has been to the line 127 times in his 21 games this year. I guess we are likely to to see another Free Throw disparity in our next game.

FYI in their final seasons at SJU, Marcus Hatten shot 200 Free Throws in a 34 game season, DeAngelo Harrison shot 194 Free Throws in 33 games and Shamorie Ponds shot 183 Free Throws in 33 games. At this rate, by the end of the year, Jenkins is going to wind up with below 60 Free Throws taken this season. That is way too low.

We lost this game on the 13-2 X run to seal the Win . That’s on our defense more than Jenkins missing 1 3 point shot .

I agree, and I never stated the conference would receive 8 or 9 bids. I said if we win 11 conference games then we're firmly in the dance, particularly if those wins are from a combination of the top 3 teams.

Free throws ? Nearly every commentator on every game , comments on how great a Pull up Jump shooter that Jenkins is and how he is deadly with it .

The way he shoots it , lessens his chances to get to the rim . Which to me , is ok .

Rather have the 2 points as a certainty.

Was thinking about two plays in the second half that shifted momentum.

In one case Luis got a steal and was fouled lightly, preventing an obvious break away and dunk.

In another, Jenkins turned it over and looked to similarly foul xavier guy before he could take off for the fast break dunk. No whistle and crowd got to explode.

If Luis makes both free throws it wouldn’t have mattered, but as it was he missed the front end of the 1 and 1. Anyway, just ranting now.

He shoots 78% from FT. That's a more high quality show than whatever pull up jumper he's got.

Dingle shot 167 last year in 28 games, or, 10.5 free throw attempts per 100 possessions. Per 100, Ponds was at 8.5, Harrison at 11.

I'm done trying to figure out what happened this year with him, but man...

Marillac is on 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 and absolutely spot on here. Especially the following posts about the inexcusability of Jenkins taking that jump shot down 2 instead of getting the ball to Soriano vs a lunchbag and his unwillingness/inability to set up wings.

We lost this game down 77-75 when Jenkins shot a stupid three instead of getting it to Soriano, who had a backup on him. It was a low IQ play. It’s just bad basketball.

Jenkins then gave up back to back threes to Olivari to make it 83-75. Guards have basically scored at will on Jenkins all year so I rarely bring up his defense as there is nothing he can do. He tries really hard…he’s just not physically talented.

He also had a rebound go right through his arms that I don’t fault him for due to his lack of strength.
He can control his decision-making, however.

Show the screenshot of the shot he took.

It’s not the last possession of the game. It’s 230 left. In rhythm and open. Not a step back. Had 2 of the best offensive rebounders in the country headed to the plaint and was having a great night shooting. It was not this disaster of a shot you are claiming it was.
