Zendon, Felipe, etc. discussion

I remember very early in Felipe's career, Yukon throttled him defensively pretty good and after the game, Calhoun made some disparaging remarks about Felipe's game and how easily his team bottled him up. Calhoun was not gracious in victory at all.

I also remember a big win at UCONN with Zendon having a big game a bowing to the crowd afterward.

Will never forget how Mahoney lost McLeod to Duke; couldn't believe the lack of playing time.
While Rashown was waiting for the opposition to take a foul shot, I yelled to him,"Looking good." He smiled and said thank you. Nice kid.

There are worse sins than playing Charles Minland over McLeod. Minland wasn't as good a scorer, but he was as tough a player as I've ever seen at STJ.

Off the top of my head, Mahoney brought in:

Roshown McLeod - Top 50
James Scott - Juco All American
Felipe Lopez - No 1 recruit in the country.
Zendon Hamilton - Top 10 recruit
Tarik Turner - Top 50 recruit
Mike Menniefield - Juco
Lavor Postell - Top 50 recruit
Collin Charles - Top 150
Ed Brown - Top 200
Ty Grant - Top 200

Granted he was coming off the glory years of LC, and you can see how the recruiting started dropping off in the later years - although Ty turned out to be a very good player.

Mahoney couldnt figure out how to play Mcloud. He transferred to Duke, started and became a 1st round draft pick.
How to play him? A good start would have been to get him off the bench and put him in the game. A St J's player who could not get PT transfers to Duke and becomes one of their feature players.Played some in NBA also. Mahoney just didn't realize he actually had a talented player.

McLeod was also unhappy with the way he was being used by Mahoney. He wanted to play facing the basket (where he saw his future in the NBA), but under Mahoney he was spending a good deal of his PT in the low post.

Just curious, was Zendon considered a top 50 recruit within his class?

He and Felipe were McDonald All Stars; game was played at Alumni Hall. Can you believe that?

I was there, and Felipe was the best guy on the court. Zendon hit the deck a lot in that game.

Reid, Greer, and Foyle also played, so good showing for New York and New Jersey.

What year was that?

1994.

I was there too with my son and recalled Felipe not living up to expectations as national number 1. He shot a lot and didn't make many. That went on to be The story of his run at SJU.

Felipe was what he was; some thought hemight be overrated in HS for just the reason offered earlier in the thread, he never had to prove he could shoot in HS. As it turned out, he was an erratic shooter for his entire college and pro creer which meant he was an excellent college player and decent pro but never the great many thought he would be. Still had a really good career.

He was probably the game's leading scorer, or no worse than a point or two less than Ward.

Pretty sure he was MVP, too.
