Zach Brown Arrested Again

Damn, this story keeps getting worse.

May be the worst recruiting decision in redmen history. Will never ever wear a college Jersey.

Hey '72, the Norvel Pelle of the current era. Seems we have a few of these out there.[/quote]

Wrong! Norvel was a great and talented kid. Had it not been for his academics he may have changed the course of both Lavin's and St. John's basketball history.

Did Pelle ever play anywhere?

He went to the professional ranks and plays professionally in Italy. He also never robbed or assaulted anyone or wore makeup. ;)

Yes that is a first! The makeup that is....

Who's the guy we took over Gary Payton? That's the worst recruiting decision in Redmen history.

This kid won't outlive James Felton if he doesn't get help.

Took Elander Lewis and Marcus Broadnax leaving no room for Payton. :(

Louie wasn't immune to bad decision making. I don't recall how much of Gary Payton's recruitment is fact or fiction but he was a west coast kid that Mahoney and Rutledge did not see play as much as Albany's Elander Lewis who was also a top 50 player like Payton. The mistake was sticking with Broadnax who was Mr. Basketball in Florida. He was an academic risk and was quickly recruited over with Boo Harvey and Michael Porter.
Zach Brown was a huge gamble because of his prior transgressions. It reeked of desperation on our part and wasted a lot of Matt's recruiting hours that could have been better served going for a less talented but more physiologically stable big man. Likely a major reason we have a hole in the middle.

Hey, I had a class with Mr. B (I believe he was related to Broadnax from Gtown) and Elander Lewis who if I remember correctly came from Albany. Both were a couple years younger than I. Lewis just never cut it and Broadnax didn't last long either. Looking back we would have all liked Gary Payton. If I remember correctly the story was Payton grew up a Big East fan and huge St John's fan. Louie had already recruited the other two before Payton took off. Sure there is more to the story but I can't remember. Boy would Payton have looked good in red/white. I am sure there are many unfortunate recruiting stories like this including the Olajuwon fiasco at JFK. A National Championship got away that day.

Seems so dumb in retrospect, but fact is both Broadnax (seem to recall he wasn't related to Horace) and Lewis were top 50 kids, so the staff was thrilled to land them at the time. I know I was. As for Olajuwon, that story -- which is a good one -- has some truth to it, but I think it's taken on apocryphal proportions as time goes by: ask 10 people, and you'll get 10 different versions.

Yeah you are right both were big recruits. A lot of hype at the time. Not only were we having success on the court but we now had 2 shiny recruits and we were gonna be great forever. Not sure about relation story of Broadnax. At the time I don't recall anyone mentioning Payton. I heard the Payton story when watching the NBA and he really wanted to go to SJU or so they said. I am sure there are many "tall" tales around recruiting. It is intriguing though. ESPN included the Olajuwan story on 30 on 30 story about Phi Slamma Jamma..

I don't recall how it was recounted in the ESPN piece, but I do know the Olajuwan story has gotten better and better over the years with each retelling. Bottom line: the result's always the same. As for Payton, I remember someone close t o the program at the time telling me there was some late interest in a kid from California, and I remember thinking, "We're signing Lewis and Broadnax, we don't need this kid. Forget about him." So it goes.

Remember when we offered Lenny Cooke over Carmelo Anthony? good times...

"We are sure that you were recruited by a lot of colleges when you were younger. Why did you choose Syracuse?

I was always a Big East fan. I wanted to play in the Big East and I always wanted to go to St. John’s, but St. John’s didn’t recruit me that year. But I am also a big [Jim] Boeheim fan and Syracuse was one of the top schools I wanted to go to."

You just never know who is going to pan out and who isn't.

Offering scholarships is also a game of who you feel wants to come here, what you need, academics, and whether or not the kid has had troubles.

Looie is now 91 and been retired 25 years. Most of our posters are between 50 and 80. The good thing is I guess, for some of us, old crap seems new again as memory fades. Not really worth discussing for the upteenth time tho.
