Zach B Article on Lav & Local HS Coaches

What a stupid article. It was trying to burn Lavin for not recruiting locally. But, than had to put the truth out there. There was only 1 MCDAA in the 5 years Lavin was coach and he his HS coach rode him to a job at SHU. Additionally, it said when there was talent in the pool Lav offered schollies.

So basically the article was saying 2 things...

1. Lav went after and in a lot of cases successfully recruited a better player than the local crop

and

2. These HS coaches want their ass kissed so they can vicariously live out their dreams through young people that actually have talent.

And to the board that says they want a national power... Guess what you're going to have to recruit nationally.

Guess how many UK players come from Lexington. Then guess how many points they've scored between them.

Agree.... This program won't survive with a roster primarily loaded with NYC kids. If so, then be prepared to get your arse routinely kicked. You get the very, good-to-decent talented kids from the area, and continue to recruit nationally. If you wanna consistently be on a national level, then recruiting nationwide is gonna be the route to take.

As, Marillac stated.... Some kids just wanna get out of the city (it's been that way for years.... even when Lou C was at the helm). Just get good players, regardless of their locale is my motto.

Not an either/or Dink. A good coach can and will do both. Wait and see.

I'm fine with the coach doing both. But I know in order for this program to consistently compete on a national level, then it'll have to be primarily done with national talent rather than local talent. You can sprinkle in the local talent, as any coach should do. But landing the blue-chippers outside of NYC will be what sustains a national level program.

Theorectically we need 3-4 kids per year to keep the roster full. Some years more, some years less. But thats an avg. No reason why, with some local pipelines, we shouldnt be able to pick up at least 1-2 local kids per year. They dont have to be blue chippers, the Carrington/ADR/Salnave types are fine. If the occasional Whitehead type kid comes then great. Gives us a constant pool to pull from and a local flavor, which IMO is more important than people like to admit.

Oh the old alienating the local HS coaches bit. These local HS coaches have to be the biggest collection of thin skinned alienatees since James Naismith alienated peaches from a basket

Other than Naclario and Konchalsky, there are few on the high school/aau scene worthy of respect. What I see are coaches with vendettas...coaches with their hands out...coaches who are doing it for the extra money...coaches who expect their asses kissed.

Every one agrees public relations was Lavin's strong suit. I'll take Naclario and Konchalsky at their words...that Lavin could have done a better job in that department. Jarvis and Lavin learned first hand about NYC area coaches and how small some can be. Norm looked the other way and we know what that got him. Looie knew everybody, but he didn't win anything...

Zach talks about recruiting NYC and the names he comes up with are Jax/Berry/Mullin. That was a long time ago, big guy. The talent isn't there anymore... If we limit for the most part our recruiting to NYC, we'll be another Fordham.

This can be a dirty business and it seems like there is a lot of attitudes and egos that are tough to deal with.

The bottom line is that recruiting NYC is important just as every other major city and state in the union. Overseas is also important.

I'm liking this Zach moron less and less. Lavin was a good guy who did a pretty good job here. Kicking him while he is down is classless.

Lavin must have slept with Zach's gf or bf. There are so many story lines out there that would get the same amount or more attention and clicks, but he chooses to just keep burying a man who is gone that never said a bad word about him.

Interesting criticism from a guy who can't go three posts without mentioning Norm Roberts record at Queens College.

Joe A said what I've been saying all along, Rawle is there for the taking. He is wide open and IMO would welcome the opportunity to stay home.

You know what is sad and downright pathetic about Arbitello, though? The fact that he would limit his kid's choices because of a personal disagreement he had with a coach that didn't involve the kid whatsoever. He needs to really go over his priorities and understand what his role is as a basketball coach, adviser, and mentor. He should help his kids go to the best situation possible even if it went against his preferences. HIS preferences don't matter.

Rawle could blow out a knee, just have an awful season or fail to qualify and one day beg to be a part of a program like St. John's. What about the 10-11 kids he coaches every year that would do anything to even be noticed by St. John's? Just selfish and immature of him to burn bridges like that.

Zach has shown us all his true colors. He knows who to run to to get the negative quotes he needs to help his ego. Less than an hour after Lav is let go he tweets new Arbitello quotes. If you lie down with dogs, you get up with fleas.

To the best of my knowledge, Lavin showed his face at CTK once in the time he was here. That was at this year's tripleheader. I'm not so sure he ever even saw ADR play while he was at CTK. How the hell is he going to recruit Rawle if he doesn't make an appearance? And assuming for a second that he was persona non grata at CTK, please explain to me why he didn't show his face at any other gym. What is he persona non grata at every HS gym in NY and NJ?

Lavin saw ADR play on a number of occasions. I know that he was at Fordham for the CHSAA playoffs the last two years Adonis was in high school. If you are not sure about something, do some research before you post it. Zach and Arbitello have a problem with Lavin and they will probably still talk about him 5 years from now, SMH !!!!

Zach is going to be a regular riot at Lavin's funeral.

Yeesh what an arse.

Lavin will probably will him his fortune

Ha! You get positive karma for getting my honeymooners reference, and responding with one of your own. :cheer:

I was also at semis at Fordham those years & in fairness did see Lavin both times.

None were on teams that were able to crack the elite eight because the other NYC guys weren't on their levels.

1991 and 1999 we were elite 8 teams. I'll take that every year. The Lopez,
Turner, Hamilton class couldn't do it and tht was supposed to be our best recruiting class ever

A tale of two STJ players who played for the same NYC high school coach (a friend and colleague of mine). Willie Shaw was recruited to STJ by Jarvis (the guy who made a speech when he was President of the NABC decrying the undo influence of AAU coaches and handlers and the need to work through the high school coaches) with no contact through his high school coach. Dwight Hardy was headed for STJ as a high school senior with Norm and his high school coach working together to make it happen, all through a prep year and junior college. Be careful about painting a portrait of the local coaches with too broad a brush.

Last I checked he's unemployed. Clearly his recruiting strategy didn't work out to well for him. But nice try.

I have no doubt that Lavin will land on his feet. I do question in our program will. However, I will support whomever the replacement is (even if its gasp Cluess or Mas).

You are right about that, Johnny Mathis is a class act. However, that is the problem right there, Coach Mathis promotes his players and not himself. You never see his name in the newspaper talking about anyone, positively or negatively. His mission is to do what is best for his players. It is a shame that more high school coaches do not have the same attitude.
