Yakwe & Bright SJU Future

Very nice profile of Kassoum and the team, and by a Nova grad no less. Thanks for posting Paultz.

As the season winds down, my thinking is that the only players who will get significant playing time next season are Yakwe and Sima. Others might depending on a number of factors.

Yakwe has shown a very soft touch around the basket, I'd have been less upset had Yakwe gotten the ball down low Sunday on the last play.

Ellison and Jones will both see time next year

The better we are the less time they will see IMO. The more time they see would be a bad omen for how good we will be, kind of inversely proportional to how many wins next year's squad attains.

Thanks for the article which I would have otherwise not seen!
From the very first time Yawke stepped on the court Chris Mullin saw/commented on great things. It's now happening - the movement toward being a stellar BE player.

I disagree. Unless there is a fifth year grad transfer coming in that can grab boards, jones will probably see 8-10 minutes a game because he's a big body. And also unless there is a guard coming in we don't know about that is above 6 feet, Ellison will get minutes. Ellison is good enough to get minutes. And I think both of these guys can play minutes and we can still be a good team next year.

I don't consider 8-10 minutes significant. If either is 15 minutes or above we aren't an ncaa tourney team. Still not convinced that Jones is a 5th year player for us next year, but we will see. I actually think that on a good team in the right circumstance, Mussini may have more value, but right now he is really struggling.

He's averaging 25 minutes per game this year. With Yakwe, Sima, Owens, and Freudenberg out there, my guess is he averages 12 minutes per game actually.

Ellison on the other hand should see 15+ minutes per game. We need a guard who can get to the hoop using their body and he's our best shot other then Ahmed who will probably be a 3

I honestly believe that every single kid on this team, excluding walk-ons, has the ability to be a solid contributor(or better) at this level if given the right roll, with the right coaching and surrounded by the right talent. Even AA, who I have been critical of in the past. I trust that this staff, between now and the start of next year, will figure out how to make all the pieces to the puzzle fit correctly.

For the guys lucky enough to witness Walter Berry while at sju; (a) is Yakwe reminding you more of him as he continues to improve and (b) do you think he become that type of player?

I never saw him play at sju and I realize his numbers were o u t s t a n d i n g, but at least characteristically there are comparisons. Undersized pf, lefty, unorthodox release, freak athlete.

I like Yakwe but that is like comparing the Outback to Peter Luger's or Smith & Wollensky's

If he can develop a serviceable 15 foot jumper, David Russell is a better benchmark. Which would still be high praise from me.

but but but Yakwe is doing more as an 18 year old freshmen at sju than Walter ever did ;)

But seriously, the kid just had 16 and 15 as a freshmen. Hes a PF. Russel was a wing player correct?

Russell played the 4. Russell was really good. Yakwe is a better rebounder / shotblocker and Russell was a way better offensive player. Both lefty and both jumped to the moon.

Didn't mean to make fun of your question but Berry just might have been the best player I have seen here, including Mullin.

His unorthodox release after his offensive rebounds reminds me of Walter.

Took no offense. I realize the chances we have of ever getting a player as productive as Berry was are very low. Was talking more style of play but of course Yakwe has a chance to be an excellent player in his own right during his time at sju.

Didnt realize Russell was PF, thought he was wing. Would take his production in a heartbeat. Thanks.

I don't know how many videos of Berry in action exist but I suspect a lot. Berry had an assortment of shots where he could spin, twist and turn, double pump, etc, but I don't think his release was unorthodox. He could do all these twists and pumps, and maintain tremendous concentration on the basket and his final release to me appeared fundamentally sound with his eyes on the hoop and his body squared at the basket. As a lefty he could half spin or crossover to his right, and always catch a defender leaning that way despite the fact that he was left handed and would come back to his left. It's one of the huge inherent advantages lefties have in basketball.

Reggie Carter, on the other hand, had a funky release on his jump shot that was unorthodox. .

True, but Berry could also hurt you with the 12-15 jumper. That's something Yakwe needs to develop if he's to take it to the next level ... not a Berry level, but a damned good one.
